  • To improve the aerodynamic efficiency of Smart Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (SUAV), vortex generators and flow fence are applied on the surface and the tip of wing. The initially applied vortex generator increased maximum lift coefficient and delayed the stall angle while it produced excessive increase in drag coefficient. It turns out reduction of the airplane's the lift/drag ratio. The new vortex generators with L-shape and two different height, 3mm and 5mm, were used to TR-S4 configuration to maintain the desired level of maximum lift coefficient and drag coefficient. Flow fence was also applied at the end of both wing tip to reduce the interaction between nacelle and wing when nacelle tilting angles are large enough and produce flow separation. To examine the effect of flow fence, flow visualization and force and moment measurements were done. The variation of the aerodynamic characteristics of SUAV after applying flow control devices are summarized.

  • In this study, the vorticity distribution and the temperature distribution change around a circular cylinder were compared and analyzed with time for constant inlet velocity and periodic inlet velocity. Also, the frequency characteristics of the flow were analyzed by analyzing the time variation of lift and drag and their PSD(power spectral density). In the case of constant inlet velocity, the well known Karman vorticity distribution was shown, and vortices were alternately generated at the upper and lower sides of the circular cylinder. In case of periodic inlet velocity, it was observed that vortex occurred simultaneously in the upper and lower sides of the circular cylinder. In both cases, it was confirmed that the time dependent temperature distribution changes almost the same behavior as the vorticity distribution. For the constant inlet velocity, the vortex flow frequency is 31.15 Hz, and for the periodic inlet velocity, the vortex flow frequency is equal to the preriodic inlet velocity at 15.57 Hz. The mean surface Nusselt number was 99.6 for the constant inlet velocity and 110.7 for the periodic inlet velocity, which showed 11.1% increase in surface heat transfer.

  • The study considers the high maneuverability flight and path optimization is conducted to investigate the appropriate generation of the lift and thrust considering the angle of the stroke plane. The path optimization problem is defined according to the various purposes of the high maneuverability flight. The flying purposes are to maximize thrust force, lift force and both lift and thrust forces. The flapping motion of the airfoil is made by a combined sinusoidal plunging and pitching motion in each problem. The optimization process is carried out by using well-defined surrogate models. The surrogate model is determined by the results of two-dimensional computational fluid dynamics analysis. The Kriging method is used to make the surrogate model and a genetic algorithm is utilized to optimize the surrogate model. The optimization results show the flapping motions for the high maneuverable flight. The effects on the generation of lift and thrust forces are confirmed by analyzing the vortex.

  • Experimental study was conducted to investigate aerodynamic interference effect of wing tip vortex in formation flight of high speed aircraft. In formation flight, wing tip vortex produced by leading aircraft can affect on the aerodynamic characteristics of trailing aircraft. The interference effect of flow is varied with distances between wing tips of leading and trailing aircraft. It is confirmed, in this study, that the interference of wing tip vortex generated from the leading aircraft makes the aerodynamic forces and moments of the trailing aircraft with the vertical or horizontal positions of the trailing aircraft. Especially, the lift coefficients of trailing aircraft were highly increased at y/b=-0.125, z/b=0.0 or deeply decreased at y/b=-0.5, z/b=0.38. The interfering pattern of wing tip vortices from two aircraft is precisely observed.

  • Current trends in propeller design have led to the need for extremely complex blade shapes, which place great demands on the accuracy of design and analysis methods. This paper presents a new proposal for improving the prediction of propeller performance with a vortex lattice method using the lifting surface theory. The paper presents a review of the theory and a description of the numerical methods employed. For 8 different propellers, the open water characteristics are calculated and compared with experimental data. The results are in good agreement in the region of a high advanced velocity, but there are differences in the other case. We have corrected the parameters for the trailing wake modeling in this paper, and repeated the calculation. The new calculation results are more in agreement with the experimental data.

  • A numerical simulation was done to investigate the performance of thin wings in close vicinity to ground. The simulation is based on Vortex Lattice Method(VLM) and freely deforming wake elements are taken into account for a sudden acceleration case. The parameters covered in the simulation are angle of attack, aspect ratio, ground clearance, sweep angle and taper ratio. In addition, the effect of the wing endplate on the ground effect is included. The wing sections used for present computations are uncambered, cambered and S-types. The present computational results are compared with other published computational results and experimental data.

  • Vortex-shedding flows past a circular cylinder for 200≤ Re ≤ 5000 are numerically simulated with the PowerCFD code, using a finite volume method and an unstructured grid system, developed by the author. The simulation is peformed by solving the unsteady 2-D Wavier-Stokes equations with both no model and turbulence model. The resulting Reynolds number dependence of the Strouhal number and of the drag and lift coefficients is compared with both experiments and previous numerical results. It is found that, in the range of 200≤ Re ≤ 5000 the calculation method with a turbulence model is capable of producing reasonably more accurate results than that with no model for the main practically relevant parameters such as Strouhal number, drag and lift coefficients.

  • The unsteady vortex lattice method is used to model twisting and flapping motions of a rectangular flat plate wing. The results for plunging and pitching motions were compared with the limited experimental results available and other numerical methods. They show that the method is capable of simulating many of the features of complex flapping flight. The lift, thrust and propulsive efficiency of a rectangular flat plate wing have been calculated for various twisting angles and reduced frequency with an amplitude of flapping angle($20^{\circ}$). And the effects of the twisting on the aerodynamic characteristics of the flapping wing are discussed by examination of their trends.
