  • Vent mixer can provide main flow directly into a recirculation region downstream of the mixer to enhance fuel-air mixing efficiency. Based on experimental results of three-dimensional velocity, vorticity and turbulent kinetic energy obtained by a stereoscopic PIV method, the performance of the vent mixer was compared with that of the step mixer which was used as a basic model. Thick shear layers of the vent mixer induced the increase of the penetration height. The turbulent kinetic energy mainly distributed along a boundary layer between the main flow and the jet plume. This turbulent field activates mass transfer in a mixing region, leading to the mixing enhancement.

  • The three-dimensional spatial structures of impeller flow created by a six bladed Rushton turbine have identified based on the volumetric velocity information from multi-plane stereoscopic PIV measurements. A total of 10 planes with 2 mm space with a 50 mm by 64 mm size of the field of view were targeted. To reduce the depth of focus, we adopted an angle offset configuration which satisfied the Scheimpflug condition. The distortion compensation procedure was utilized during the in situ calibration. Phase-locked instantaneous data were ensemble averaged and interpolated in order to obtain mean 3-D, volumetric velocity fields on a 60 degree sector of a cylindrical ring volume enclosing the turbine blade. Using the equi-vorticity surface rendering, the spatial structure of the trailing vortices was clearly demonstrated. Detail flow characteristics of the radial jet reported in previous studies of mixer flows were easily identified.

  • Turbulent flows and related heat transfer in a square heated duct is investigated by a turbulence model and a large eddy simulation. The cooling channel of calorimeter is modeled to the square duct. The nonlinear k-ε-fμ model of Park et al. [3] is slightly modified and their explicit heat flux model is employed. The Reynolds number is varied in the range 4000≤Reb≤20000. The heat transfer is closely linked to the secondary flows which driven by the turbulent motion. Its magnitude is 1~3% of the mean streamwise velocity. The relation of Nu~Re0.8Pr0.34 is validated by comparing with the predicted Nu of k-ε-fμ model. Finally, the coherent structures and thermal fluctuations are scrutinized.

  • In the case of appling a unielement injector developed for a full scale liquid rocket combustor, a operating condition or configuration of the injector is changed by combustion pressure, arrangement and injector quantity of a full scale liquid rocket combustor. In order to verify application, swirl coaxial injectors propelled by jet-A1 and liquid oxygen are tested at different conditions of a combustion pressure, a flowrate and an injector length. As a test result, the application of the present swirl coaxial injectors is excellent because an efficiency of a characteristic velocity is increased at the each test condition beyond that variation of dynamic pressure intensity is small.

  • Swirling flows inside a swirl mixing chamber are investigated for simple configuration where swirl is produced by a tangential entry type swirl generator. The flow downstream of the swirl generator has been quantified by measurements two velocity components and their corresponding mean values along axial and radial direction using Particle Image Velocimetry(PIV). The mass flow rate of the tangential entry is increased in order to study their effect on the flow field. From the measurement profile of velocity and vorticity, flow mixing characteristics in a swirl mixing chamber are evaluated.

  • To identify turbulent flow characteristics of non-reacting case resulted from cooling flow injection in a rectangular swirl combustor, 3D Large Eddy Simulation(LES) was implemented and Proper Orthogonal Decomposition(POD) analysis was used for post-processing. The combustor of concern is the LM6000, lean premixed dry low-NOx annular combustor, developed by GEAE. It was observed that increase in speed of shear layer resulted from the inflow of cooling flow caused intensified vorticity magnitude in central toroidal recirculation zone. In the case of vorticity magnitude in corner recirculation zone, however, was weakened. In addition, pressure fluctuation in combustor was damped down and longitudinal acoustic mode was significantly dissipated

  • High-pressure swirl injectors have usually been employed in Gasoline direct injection engines due to their spray characteristics and the feasibility of their control. Thus the microscopic characteristics of high-pressure swirl spray were investigated by PDA. The correlation between axial and radial velocities and the correlation between droplet size and axial velocity were examined with different axial and radial positions. Two dimensional droplet velocity and its number distribution with size-classified droplets were illustrated. The mean droplet velocity and its SMD were also analyzed at the center of spray, the position having maximum mean axial velocity, and the spray periphery using time dividing method. Finally, the structure of high-pressure swirl spray was presented with the size distribution and velocity profile of droplets.

  • This study examines the effect of acoustic excitation using forced coaxial air on the flame characteristics of turbulent hydrogen nonpremixed flames. A resonance frequency was selected to acoustically excite the coaxial air jet due to its ability to effectively amplify the acoustic amplitude and reduce flame length and NOx emissions. Acoustic excitation causes the flame length to decrease by 15 % and consequently, a 25 % reduction in EINOx is achieved, compared to a flame without acoustic excitation. Moreover, acoustic excitation induces periodical fluctuation of the coaxial air velocity, thus resulting in slight fluctuation of the fuel velocity. From phase-lock PIV and OH PLIF measurement, the local flow properties at the flame surface were investigated under acoustic forcing. During flame-vortex interaction in the near field region, the entrainment velocity and the flame surface area increased locally near the vortex. This increase in flame surface area and entrainment velocity is believed to be a crucial factor in reducing flame length and NOx emission in coaxial jet flames with acoustic excitation. Local flame extinction occurred frequently when subjected to an excessive strain rate, indicating that intense mass transfer of fuel and air occurs radially inward at the flame surface.

  • The frequency characteristics in an axial flow fan operating at a design and three off-design operating conditions have been investigated by measuring the velocity fluctuation of a tip leakage vortex and a wake flow. Two hot-wire probe sensors rotating with the fan rotor. a fixed and a moving ones, were introduced to obtain a cross-correlation coefficient between two sensors as well as the fluctuating velocity. The results show that the spectral peaks due to the fluctuating velocity near the rotor tip are mainly observed in the reverse flow region of higher flow rates than those in the peak pressure operating condition. However, no peak frequency presents near the rotor tip for near stall condition. Detailed wake flow just downstream of the rotor blade was also measured by the rotating hot-wire sensor. The peak frequency of a high velocity fluctuation due to Karman vortex shedding in the wake region is mainly observed at the higher flow rate condition than that in the design point.
