The relieving platform has the advantage of decreasing the total lateral earth pressure on the retaining wall and increasing the overall stability of the structure. Several modeling tests were performed to determine the earth pressure distribution on the retaining wall with a relieving platform and to compare it with that of the cantilever retaining wall. Different types of soil and angle of cutting surface were used to determine the effect of the soil characteristics and the backfill conditions on these earth pressure distributions. From the modeling tests, comparisons between the retaining wall with a relieving platform and the cantilever retaining wall show that the reduction of the lateral earth pressure and deformation of wall was indicated clearly on the retaining wall with a relieving platform. And the overall stability was increased by the relieving platform.
The soil arching in the backfill, which affects the magnitude and distribution of active earth pressure on a retaining wall, has also an effect on the stability and cross-sectional area of the retaining wall. In this study, results obtained from Paik's equation that includes arching effect on active earth pressure are compared with those from Coulomb theory to investigate the influence of the soil arching on active earth pressure, overturning moment, stability and cross-sectional area of translating rigid retaining walls. The comparisons show that the active forces including arching effects are always higher than those from Coulomb theory, irrespective of $\phi$ and $\delta$ values. The overturning moments, shear force and moment on the rigid wall are also higher when considering arching effects than when not considering arching effects. The deviation of shear forces and moments by including and excluding arching effects becomes maximum at the height of 0.02-0.08 times wall height from the base of the wall. Therefore, if a translating rigid retaining walls is designed based on Coulomb theory, the wall may reach sliding and overturning failures due to arching effect in the backfill and the cross-sectional area of the wall, especially at lower part of the wall, may not be sufficient to resist to shear force and moment.
This paper presents the results of stability analyses on soil-reinforced segmental retaining walls in a tiered arrangement. Four different walls were examined to investigate the appropriateness of their designs within the context of the current design guidelines based on limit equilibrium. Slope stability analysis against the compound failure mode, which is frequently ignored during design, was also performed based on the method recommended by FHWA design guidelines. The results indicate that the as-built designs of some of the walls examined do not meet the minimum factors of safety for the external and internal stabilities, and for the compound failure mode. The implications of the findings from this study are discussed.
From the practical point of view, general retaining wall systems, such as gravity wall, cantilever wall and reinforced wall, have several problems. As a countermeasure, precast block type retaining wall systems have been developed and used for the various purposes of construction. The retaining wall systems can be applied not only for mechanical purpose but environmentally friendly aspects by changing the shapes of surface plates and planting on the surface plates. On the other hand, the bulging failure was dominant near the center of wall height. Therefore, an individual block has to be estimated for the stability problem related to turnover and the for design of gravity block type wall. On the basis of this result, the optimum section of the wall has to be determined.
This paper presents the results of investigation on the behavior of soil-reinforced segmental retaining walls in tiered arrangement using the finite element method of analysis. 2D finite element analyses were performed on tiered walls with two levels of offset distance. Cases with equivalent surcharge as suggested by the NCMA design guideline were additionally analyzed in an attempt to confirm the appropriateness of the equivalent surcharge model adopted by NCMA. Deformation characteristics of a tiered wall with small offset distance suggest a compound mode of failure and support current design approaches requiring a global slope stability analysis for design. Also revealed is that the interaction between the upper and lower walls significantly affects not only the performance of the lower wall but also the upper wall, suggesting that the upper walls should also be designed with due consideration of the interaction.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of traffic loads on retaining wall stability. There is insufficient research on lateral earth pressure on retaining wall due to traffic load. In addition, limited detailed designs of retaining wall for transportation including number of lanes of road, magnitudes of axle loads, and vehicle formations are available. Because the lateral earth pressure on the retaining wall due to traffic loads is a function of the lateral distance from retaining wall, the wall height, and the locations of lanes, the analysis of lateral load on retaining wall from traffic loads is performed with direct or indirect reflection of these factors. As a result of the analysis, lateral earth loads induced from traffics can be considered negligible if the lateral distance of traffic load from wall exceeds the height of retaining wall. Therefore, it is practically reasonable to consider traffic loads within a lateral distance between wall and traffic load of the height of retaining wall.
Geosynthetic reinforced soil walls are well recognized alternatives to conventional retaining walls due to many advantages in terms of ease of construction, economy, and aesthetics, among others. In recent years, the use of back-to-back (BTB) geosynthetic reinforced soil walls has been increasing for roadway and railway construction. However, there are insufficient studies concerning the behavior of BTB type geosynthetic reinforced soil walls. In this study a series of finite element analysis were performed for BTB walls with various wall geometry and reinforcement distribution. The results were then analyzed to relate the wall geometry and reinforcement distribution and the performance of BTB walls. Optimum reinforcement pattern was also investigated.
