  • In the summer, the irradiated solar heat gain through the roof has an effect on the thermal environment of the top floor units of apartment houses. This paper investigated the differences of the indoor air temperature and thermal comfort index between the top floor unit and the middle floor unit by measuring them at the sample houses. The purpose of this paper is to provide quantitative data about the irradiated solar heat gain during the summertime through the roof of an apartment house and these data to be the source to reevaluate the appropriate roof insulation efficiency. From this study, we obtained the brief results as follows. Indoor air temperature at the top floor unit is $1.2\sim2.2^{\circ}C$ higher than that of middle floor unit. The evaluation of the indoor thermal comfort index at each sample rooms reveals notable thermal differences between the two units. Top floor units need more cooling load during the summertime compared to middle floor units. Therefore, solutions to reduce solar Heat gain at top floor units to be considered.

  • This study considers indoor thermal comfort in an ondol space by supply vent configurations to prevent cold draft in winter. A specially-designed vent cap has been investigated in comparison with a round pan-type vent and a simple opening without a cap. Numerical simulations have been conducted using CFD to analyze thermal comfort indices such as Predicted Mean Vote (PMV) and Effective Draft Temperature (EDT) as well as air distribution index i.e. Air Diffusion Performance Index (ADPI). Results show the new vent cap provides improved thermal comfort conditions especially near ondol heated floor, as the cold outdoor air spreads upwards along the vertical wall before reaching occupant region near floor. This paper includes discussions on the flow and comfort distributions created by the thermal jets from the vents.

  • For this purpose, the authors proposed and proved usefulness of the modified mean skin temperature which is integrated mean radiation temperature and the effect of floor contacted heat conduction. The mean radiation temperature is applied form factor between half cross-legged human body and surrounding wall of indoor. In addition the floor contacted heat conduction is applied heat transfer coefficient of half cross-legged human body. Eight Korean young men were targeted for the experiment. From the experiment the authors excerpted physiological reaction and psychological reaction in Ondol environment which is combined physiccal environmental factor of artificial climate chamber, air and floor temperature. As a result of the experiment it is confirmed that heat conduction has more impact than heat exchange from existing research for the heat exchange between half cross-legged human body and surrounding wall in Ondol thermal environment. Thereby, it is proved the effectiveness of the modified mean skin temperature which is added floor contacted temperature to the Ondol thermal environmental evaluation index.

  • This study was conducted to examine the effect of tree density of Pinus koraiensis forest on the thermal comfort and the physiological response of human body in summer season. As the indicators of thermal comfort were used the predicted mean vote (PMV) and predicted percentage of dissatisfied (PPD), while the heart rate variability was used for the physiological indicator of subjects. The subjects were 15 physically healthy men and women in their 20s ($23.7{\pm}1.7$ years old). The subjects sat in each site to measure HRV for 5 minutes and the thermal comfort of each site was measured. As a results, it was proven by PMV and PPD that the Pinus koraiensis forest with 120% tree density was thermally more comfortable than the Pinus koraiensis forest with 80% tree density. In case of the subjects' physiological response, the Pinus koraiensis forest with 120% tree density showed significantly higher HF of HRV than the Pinus koraiensis forest with 80% tree density and significantly lower LF/HF. Therefore, the findings of this study scientifically proved that the Pinus koraiensis forest with 120% tree density is thermally more comfortable and physiologically more relaxing than the Pinus koraiensis forest with 80% tree density.

  • The purpose of this study is to select and predict optimal heatwave indices for describing and predicting heat-related illnesses. Regression analysis was conducted using Heat-related illness surveillance system data for a number of heat-related illnesses and meteorological data from the Korea Meteorological Administration's Automatic Weather Station (AWS) for the period from 2021 to 2023. Daily average temperature, daily maximum temperature, daily average Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT), and daily maximum WBGT values were calculated and analyzed. The results indicated that among the four indicators, the daily maximum WBGT showed the highest suitability with an R2 value of 0.81 and RMSE of 0.98, with a threshold of 29.94 Celsius. During the entire analysis period, there were a total of 91 days exceeding this threshold, resulting in 339 cases of heat-related illnesses. Predictions of heat-related illness cases from 2021 to 2023 using the regression equation for daily maximum WBGT showed an accuracy with less than 10 cases of error annually, demonstrating a high level of precision. Through continuous research and refinement of data and analysis methods, it is anticipated that this approach could contribute to predicting and mitigating the impact of heatwaves.

  • In the summer, the irradiated solar heat gain through the roof has an effect on the thermal environment of the top floor units of apartment houses. This paper investigated the differences of the indoor air temperature, globe temperature and thermal comfort index between the top floor unit and the middle floor unit by measuring them at the sample units on the condition that all the openings of the units are opened. The purpose of this paper is to provide quantitative data about the irradiated solar heat gain during the summertime through the roof of an apartment house and these data to be the source to reevaluate the appropriate roof insulation efficiency. From this study, we obtained three brief results as follows. Indoor air temperature difference between the two sample units shifts a day. Indoor air temperature at the top floor unit is $0{\sim}1.8^{\circ}C$ higher than that of the middle floor unit from 12:00 p.m. to 12:00 a.m. and $0{\sim}2.8^{\circ}C$ lower from 12:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. The evaluation of the indoor thermal comfort index and the globe temperature shows similar results as the indoor air temperature measuring. Results of this experiment verified the actual existence of indoor air temperature difference between the top floor unit and the middle one and this difference comes from the heat storage of the roof.

  • Installation of ceiling type unit is achieved by one of efforts for agreeable classroom environment embodiment along with economic growth. But research about changing the position of ceiling type unit is lacking in present. Therefore, this thesis is to study the thermal environment of 5 different position cases of ceiling type, namely Case A, B, C, D, E. Here, Case C is the case that has the position of ceiling type center of the classroom and the other 4 alternatives are 0.7 m away from the Case C according to x and z axis. In this thesis temperature distributions, air current distribution, heat amenities such as PMV of occupants are analyzed as the environmental factors. Through these factors, Case C and Case D are the better position alternatives than the alternatives of Case A, Case B and Case E because the latter cases the air current reaches directly to indoor occupants so that occupants feel chilly. This thesis has a conclusion under the condition of only one inlet air temperature and seat arrangement. But afterwards more inlet air condition and seat arrangement must be considered.

  • The purpose of the study is to develop a numerical model based on experimental data to estimate the thermal comfort in the driving room of a motorcar. For the ecperiments, three air temperature level of 21, 23, 25 .deg. C are set to measure variable such as average skin temperature, R-R interval, the comfort sensation, and the performance level. By performing statistical analysis with the results obtainted, it is observed that two physiological factors-average skin temperature and R-R interval have significant relation with the thermal comfort in the driving room. Thus, those two factors are included as parameters in the proposed model to estimate the thermal comfort.
