  • A temperature-compensating double fiber Bragg grating(FBG) sensor having two different FBGs in one fiber line was proposed for real time measurement of mechanical normal strain in structures. Measurement of mechanical strains of the aluminum beam surface by the double FBG sensor was performed under various thermal conditions, and the results were compared with those of electrical resistance strain gage. The FBG sensor fabricated in this study was able to measure accurately the mechanical strains without containing any thermal strain component.

  • As bare Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) sensors are very fragile, bare FBG without encapsulation is not properly applied in practical infrastructures directly due to the harsh environment in practical engineering. Steel sleeve packaged FBG strain sensor is widely used in civil engineering. Since FBG senses both strain and temperature simultaneously, for accurate measurement of strain, temperature compensation for FBG strain sensors is indispensable. In this paper, based on the FBG's strain and temperature sensing principles, the temperature compensation techniques for steel sleeve packaged FBG sensors are brought forward. And the experiment of concrete early-age shrinkage monitoring by dual FBG sensors is carried out to test the feasibility of the temperature compensation technique.

  • In this paper, we present the simulation monitoring of strain and temperature during and after the cure of unsymmetric composite laminate using fiber optic sensors. Fiber Bragg grating/extrinsic Fabry-Perot interferometric (FBG/EFPI) hybrid sensors are used to measure those measurands. The characteristic matrix of the sensor is analytically derived and measurements can be done without sensor calibration. A wavelength-swept fiber laser is utilised as a lighr source. Two FBG/EFPI sensors are embedded in a graphite/epoxy unsymmetric cross-ply composite laminate in different directions and different locations. We perform a real time monitoring of fabrication strains and temperatures at two points of the composite laminate during cure process in an autoclave. Also, the thermal strains and temperatures of the fabricated laminate are measured in a thermal chamber. Through these experiments, we can provide a basis for the efficient smart processing of composite and know the thermal behavior of unsymmetric cross-ply composite laminate.

  • In this paper, we demonstrated the simultaneous measurment of triple parameters such as strain, temperature, and vibration using single FBG/EFPI hybrid sensor. The FBG/EFPI sensor system for the strain and temperature measurement and the EFPI sensor system for the the vibration measurement were combined by a wavelength division multiplexer. The optical source of FBG/ EFPI sensor system is a wavelength-swept fiber laser(WSFL) and that of an EFPI sensor system is a laser diode. We performed the simultaneous measurement of thermal strain, temperature, and vibration of a aluminum beam placed in a thermal chamber and validated the efficiency of the constructed measurment system.

  • FBG sensors have been studied more actively than any other fiber optic sensor because of good multiplexing capabilities among many fiber optic sensors. The demodulation method of FBG sensors is based on the detection of wavelength shift of their sensor peaks and properties such as strain and temperature can be measured by detecting them. However, the signal stability of FBG sensors can be influenced by the strain gradient induced by structural geometry or cracks on the surface when FBG sensors are embedded into or attached on the structure. In this study, the signal characteristics of reflected spectra of FBG sensors under strain gradient were verified and the relations between the grating length of FBG sensors and the amount of strain gradient were investigated. From the experimental results, the recommended working range of FBG sensors under strain gradients was shown quantitatively with respect to grating lengths of them.

  • FBG temperature sensor and strain sensor has been used to monitoring shrinkage and temperature of concrete retaining wall in construction site in its casting early age. The test results indicate that this monitoring method is a practical method for monitoring concrete at very early age. The monitoring technique used in this research could be extended to monitor shrinkage and temperature for mass concrete structure.

  • As concrete structures are heated, thermal strain can be developed. Because of the boundary conditions, the thermal stress may be arisen. Thermal strain and temperature were measured simultaneously using an optical fiber sensor. Fiber Bragg Grating Sensor(FBG sensor) was used in the measurement. Because it can measure the strains more than two points with one line, it was possible to measure both thermal strain and temperature with one line. To compare data measured by FBG sensor, strain and temperature were measured using strain gauge and thermocouple. The FBG sensor could measure the strain under the temperature greater than $60^{\circ}C$ but strain gauge couldn't. Both the FBG temperature sensor and thermocouple could measure the temperature and the results are related each other linearly.

  • In this research, the change of coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) of graphite/epoxy composite laminate under space environment was measured using fiber optic sensors. Two fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors have been adopted for the simultaneous measurement of thermal strain and temperature. Low Earth Orbit (LEO) conditions with high vacuum, ultraviolet and thermal cycling environments were simulated in a thermal vacuum chamber. As a pre-test, a FBG temperature sensor was calibrated and a FBG strain sensor was verified through the comparison with the electric strain gauge (ESG) attached on an aluminun specimen at high and low temperature respectively. The change of the CTE in a composite laminate exposed to space environment was measured for intervals of aging cycles in real time. As a whole, there was no abrupt change of the CTE after 1000 aging cycles. After aging, however, the CTE decreased a Little all over the test temperature range. These changes are caused by outgassing, moisture desorption, matrix cracking etc.
