Background: Acute thoracic aortic dissections involving the aortic arch differ in diagnosis, surgical procedures, and operative results compared to those that do not involve the aortic arch. In general cerebral perfusion under deep hypothermic circulatory arrest (HCA) is performed during the repair of the aortic arch dissection. Here, we report our surgical results of the aortic arch dissection repair using retrograde cerebral perfusion (RCP) and its safety. Material and Method: Between January 1996 and June 2002, 22 consecutive patients with aortic arch dissection underwent aortic arch repair. In 20 of them RCP was performed under HCA. RCP was done through superior vena cava in 19 patients and by systemic retrograde venous perfusion in 1, in whom it was difficult to reach the SVC. When the patient's rectal temperature reached 16 to 18$^{\circ}C$, systemic circulation was arrested, and the amount of RCP amount was 481.1 $\pm$292.9 $m\ell$/min with perfusion pressure of 20∼30 mmHg. Result: There were two in-hospital deaths (4.5%) and one late death (9.1%). Mean circulatory arrest time (RCP time) was 54.0$\pm$ 13.4 minutes (range, 7 to 145 minutes). RCP time has no correlation with the appearance of consciousness, recovery of orientation, or ventilator weaning time (p=0.35, 0.86, and 0.92, respectively). Ventilator weaning was faster in patients with earlier recovery of consciousness and orientation (r=0.850, r=926; p=0.000, respectively). RCP of more than 70 minutes did not affect the appearance of consciousness, recovery of orientation, ventilator weaning time, exercise time, or hospital stay (p=0.42, 0.57, 0.60, 0.83, and 0.51, respectively). Conclusion: Retrograde cerebral perfusion time under hypothermic circulatory arrest during repair of aortic arch dissection may not affect recovery of orientation, ventilator weaning time, neurologic complications, and postoperative recovery.
The experiments on the ecological characteristics of the suspensible green algae and the algae causing soil-flakes and shier chemical control were conducted in 1992. The unicellular green algae which were dominated by Chlamydomonas sp. largely occurred when phosphorus was applied, but which were reduced by nitrogen application. The filamentous green algae which were dominated by Klebsormidium sp. largely occurred when phosphorus was applied, and which much more increased when nitrogen or potassium was combined with phosphorus. The suspensible green algae which were dominated by Klebsormidium sp. were controlled by 60-70% when simazine 10g ai/10a and propanil 105g ai/10a were applied. The dark blue soil-flakes largely occurred at nitrogen application, and which much more increased when nitrogen was combined with phosphorus. The dark brown soil-flakes largely occurred at phosphorus application, but no more increased even if nitrogen or potassium was combined with phosphorus. The dark blue soil-flakes which were dominated by Oscillatoria sp. much more increased at the temperature conditions of $18^{\circ}C$ compared with $24^{\circ}C$ and $29^{\circ}C$. The applications of bensulfuron/mefenacet/dymron, piperophos/dimethametryn and bensulfuron/dimepiperate controlled 70-90% of the dark blue soil-flakes.
Experiments were carried out to understand how much do the environmental factors affect growth and tuber formation of arrowhead, Sagittaria trifolia L. The more the light transmittance decreased, the more the numbers of leaves and floral axes decreased. The dry matter weight of tops and the number and the fresh weight of formated tuber were significantly different between the light transmittance of more than 50% and that of less than 30% at the 5% level of DMRT. Plant height, number and width of leaves, and number of floral axis were affected by the Light spectra. And the degree of their effects on growth of arrowhead was different form the light spectrum. The natural light and the clear cellophane film were the most effective to increase the number and the fresh weight of formated tuber and the green spectrum was the least effective to do those. Plant height grown at 0-5cm water depth was shorter than that at 10-20cm water depth. The deeper the water depth was, the lower the leaves number was. The fresh weight and the number of arrowhead tuber were most produced at 0cm water depth and theose were least at 20cm water depth. The shoot growth and the tuber formation of arrowhead was much increased with increase of the application rate of fertilizer. The difference of the transplanted tuber size was not affected at the shoot growth, but tuber formation of arrowhead was increased with increase of the transplanted tuber size. From viewing the effect of temperature after rice heading, the shoot growth and the tuber formation at $35^{\circ}C$ were also higher than those at $25^{\circ}C$.
This experiment carried out to confirm characteristics of macrogranule (GG) for herbicidal efficacy by using remote-controlled aerial application (RCAA) to control annual and perennial weeds in rice paddy field, application methods, and application times of formulation types. Particle of 500 g GG having average diameter of 2.5~3 mm was over 85 percent, the bulk density of the particle was $0.2\sim0.4g\;mL^{-1}$ and the particle was water floating granule. Active ingredients and external form of halosulfuronmethyl+mefenacet GG remained stable under condition of storage stability test. The disintegration time of the GG was faster as the water temperature was increased. But disintegration time was not affected by pH on the water conditions. By using hand, spoon and power applicator, drift distances of GG were 4~5m, 7 m and 10~12 m, respectively. GG showed good herbicidal efficacy and plant safety in all of the application methods such as, using hand, spoon, power applicator and RCAA. Application times of GG, GR, SC and TB by hand in $4,000m^2$ were 38 min. 4 sec, 42 min. 20 sec, 38 min. 10 sec and 21 min. 4 sec, respectively, but application time of GG by using RCAA was 1 min 32 sec. According to appearance and characteristics of formulation types, suspension concentrate (SC) and GG were possible formulation types for RCAA.
To study the possible use of probiotics in fish farming, we evaluated antagonism of antibacterial strain Bacillus amyloliquefaciens H41 against the fish pathogenic bacterium Vibrio anguillarum NCMB1. The purification of growth inhibition factor produced by B. amyloliquefaciens H41 was achieved by obtaining supernatant of this bacterium. The growth inhibition factor was purified to homogeneity by 70% ammonium sulfate precipitation, DEAE-sephadex A-50 ion exchange chromatography, sephadex G-200 gel filtration column chromatography, and sephadex G-50 gel filtration column chromatography with 40.8 fold of purification and 2.9% yield. The molecular weight of the purified growth inhibition factor was 48 kDa as determined by sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. The optimum pH and temperature for the growth inhibition factor were pH 7.5 and $30^{\circ}C$, respectively. The activity of growth inhibition factor was enhanced slightly by some metal ions, such as $Mg^{+2}$, $Mn^{+2}$, but was inhibited by the addition of $Co^{+2}$, $Hg^{+2}$, $Zn^{+2}$ and $Ag^{+2}$. NaCl stability of the growth inhibition factor was observed with 50% residual activity at 3% NaCl concentration. Toxicity test showed that the purified B. amyloliquefaciens H41 growth inhibition factor did not affect the live of Japanese flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus) and the effectiveness was 78% of residual lethality compared to commercial antibacterial agents.
From a 95% ethanolic extract of H. diffusa, four marker compounds (HD1~HD4) were isolated, which were relatively unique and exist in comparably high contents. The structures of marker compounds were identified as digitolutein (1), 2-hydroxy-3-methylanthraquinone (2), (E/Z)-6-O-p-coumaroyl scandoside methyl ester (4:1 mixture) (3), and (E/Z)-6-O-p-methoxycinnamoyl scandoside methyl ester (4:1 mixture) (4), respectively, on the basis of $^{13}C$ and $^1H$-NMR analyses. The calibration curves of marker compounds showed high linearity, as their correlation coefficient ($R^2$) were in the range of 0.9991~0.9999. In addition, the limit of detection (LOD) and the limit of quantification (LOQ) were $0.03{\sim}0.07{\mu}g/ml$ and $0.099{\sim}0.231{\mu}g/ml$, respectively. The intra-day/inter-day precision and accuracy were 0.23~2.00%/0.25~1.16% and 94.60~108.44%/94.73-110.23%, respectively. The optimal HPLC conditions for the simultaneous quantification of HD1~HD4 were as follows: stationary phase; Merck Chromolith RP-18e ($100{\times}4.6mm$, $5{\mu}m$), column temp.; room temperature, UV detection at 280 nm, flow rate; 2.0 ml/min, injection volume; $10{\mu}l$, mobile phase; start with the mixture of 80% solvent A ($H_2O$ containing 0.5% acetic acid) and 20% solvent B (methanol containing 0.5% acetic acid) and gradually decrease solvent A to 40% in 9 min., then retain this condition to 18 min. Under the HPLC condition, the four marker compounds 1~4 were successfully separated without any interference of other constituents. The results obtained in this study are expected to be helpful for the development of nutraceutics and natural medicines and for the quality control of this plant.

In order to investigate distribution of vascular plants along elevational gradient in the Nodong valley of Gyebangsan, vascular plants of eight sections with 100-meter-high were surveyed from the Auto-camping site (800 m) to the top of a mountain (1,577 m). There were a total of 382 taxa: 89 families, 234 genera, 339 species, 7 subspecies, 34 varieties, and 2 forms. As a result of analyzing the pattern of species richness, it showed a reversed hump-shaped with minimum richness at mid-high elevation. As a result of analyzing habitat affinity types, the proportion of forest species increased with increasing elevation. But, the ruderal species decreased with increasing elevation, and then increased at the top of a mountain. As for the proportion of life forms, the annual herbs gradually decreased with increasing elevation, but it did not appear between 1,300 m and 1,500 m and then increased at the top of a mountain. The trees gradually increased with elevation and decreased from 1,300~1,400 m. The vascular plants divided into four groups by using DCA. The arrangement of each stands was arranged in order from right to left on the I axis according to the elevation. The distribution of vascular plants is determined by their own optimal ranges of vegetation. Also, rise in temperature due to climate change affects the distribution of vascular plants, composition, and diversity. Therefore, continuous monitoring is necessary to confirm ecological and environmental characteristics of vegetation, distribution ranges, changes of habitat. Furthermore, plans for conservation and management based on these data should be prepared according to climate change.
Peeled whole onions (PWO) were cleaned at various hypochlorous acid (HA) concentration and steeping time and packed in LDPE bag keeping at $10^{\circ}C$ for 12 days and $35^{\circ}C$ for 3 days, in order eventually to examine microbiology, surface color and sensory quality. At the early stage of storage, it was found that total bacterial counts at H-II keeping at $10^{\circ}C$ after 1 minute steeping were $2.60\;{\pm}\;0.18\;log\;CFU/g$, and those after 3 minutes steeping were $2.10\;{\pm}\;0.18\;log\;CFU/g$ which showed less than the control. The total bacterial counts at H-III were detected after 4 days. The total bacterial counts of PWO treated HA increased as steeping time became longer, HA concentration increased, and storage temperature went down. E. coli was not detected at all treatments. It was also found that during the treatment the L-value showed decreasing trend, but the parameter a- and b- value showed increasing trend. But these trends were mitigated as HA concentration increased. The result of sensory quality evaluation for the appearance showed that the sample stored with $10^{\circ}C$ gained higher evaluation than that with $10^{\circ}C$, while the control and H-III gained highest points significantly (p < 0.05) for the sample keeping at $10^{\circ}C$ after 12 days storage. The sensory odor of onion showed similar to that for the appearance, and the 8-day treatments of H-II and H-III showed no significantly difference (p < 0.05). On the basis of the results above, it is likely to be more effective to prolong the period of circulation of PWO if you use HA over 50 ppm for washing PWO and storage at $10^{\circ}C$. This study will contribute to improve safety and quality in circulation of PWO.
A potent citric acid producing strain was selected by an extensive screening test of the yeasts isolated from the various sources. These experiments were conducted to identify the selected strain and investigate the cultural conditions for citric acid production. The results obtained were as fellows: 1. The selected strain of yeast was identified to Hansenula anomala var. anomala by a taxnoomic study of Lodder. 2. The optimum conditions for citric acid production in the basal medium containing 10% glucose were: temperature $30^{\circ}C$, the concentration of $CaCO_3$ 3% and the velocity of oscillation 110 oscills/min. 3. As a nitrogen source ol the basal medium $NH_4Cl(0.1%)$ was the most effective for citric acid production. Organic nitrogen sources such as peptone were adequate for growth of the strain but not for citric acid production. 4. The most effective concentration of glucose was 10% in yield ratio of citric acid from sugar. 5. The addition of defatted rape seed, defatted perilla or defatted rice bran to the medium was effective for citric acid production. When 5% extract solution of defatted rape seed was added, the citric acid production was increased as much as 40% as compared with the case of adding yeast extract(0.2%). 6. The most effective concentration of $KH_2PO_4$ and $MgSO_4{\cdot}7H_2O$ in the medium(for citric acid Production) was 0.05% and 0.025% respectively. 7. Under the optimum cultural conditions, the growth of the strain was continued up to 5 days and the increase of citric acid production was continued up to 6 days, showing the yield ratio of 46% to glucose.
This study evaluated the hydration, gelatinization, and saccharification properties of rice processing for beverage development. The properties of rice were studied on 10 rice cultivars (Samkwang, Ilpum, Seolgaeng, Anda, Dasan-1, Goami-4, Danmi, American rice, Chinese rice, and Thai rice) and employing four kinds of pre-treatment methods (dry grain, wet grain, dry flour, and wet flour). The results showed that moisture content of rice was between 11.88~15.26%. Increase in soaking time along with highest water absorption was noted in American rice cultivar (46.81%). The water binding capacity of Thai rice was higher when compared to that of other rice flours. In addition, solubility and swelling power of rice were 4.52~26.65% and 0.19~2.05%, respectively. The amylose content of Goami-4 was higher in rice processing. Using a rapid visco analyzer (RVA), the initial pasting temperature of Danmi cultivar was found to be the highest; the peak viscosities of Anda cultivar and Dasan-1 cultivar, and Chinese rice were higher than of those of other rice flours. After saccharification, the pH, soluble solids content, and reducing sugar content of rice processed through different pre-treatment methods were in the range of 6.22~7.08, $4.67{\sim}16.07^{\circ}Brix$, and 0.35~11.67% (w/w), respectively. In terms of color values, the L-value of dry grain, a-value of wet (grain, flour), and b-value of dry sample (grain, flour) were found to be the highest. Assessment of various factors and cultivars characteristics of the raw grains are of importance in the development of rice beverage.
