  • According to the increment of urban buildings, the demand of eco-environment space will be also increased. Therefore, the artificial ground green system on a roof will be supplied gradually. In this study, the concept of simplification, unification and prefabrication was widely applied to supply green system. Consequently, the box unit system with a continuous soil layer was developed, and adhesive property, wind resistance and insulation property of this system were evaluated for site application. As a results of adhesive property and wind resistance test, comparing with design wind pressure and wind velocity, this system was safe at the height of 100m building located in urban. In addition, results of temperature measurement for 120 days showed 17% higher insulation property at daytime and 45% higher insulation property at night than normal box unit system owing to continuous soil layer.

  • This study was carried out to suggest an experimental base to maintain the sustainability of extensive green roof as considering moisture demand by the type of the green roof plant before construction. The changes of soil moisture content, chlorophyll content, coverage of Sedum kamtschaticum and Dianthus chinensis var. senperflorens in two type of perlite soil and mix soil, were investigated under the condition of no rainfall and no irrigation during one month. The result shows that with the increase of stress time, soil moisture content and chlorophyll content on leaf were in a downward trend; After 30 days, Soil moisture content were lowest in 10 cm depth perlite soil system planted Dianthus chinensis. and 20 cm depth mix soil system planted Sedum kamtschaticum had the highest soil moisture. Generally soil moisture contents of soil system planted Dianthus chinensis var. senperflorens were lower than that of soil system planted Sedum kamtschaticum. In 10 cm depth soil system, state of plant growth was better than 20 cm depth soil system both perlite soil and mix soil type. It can be confirmed.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effects of mulching materials in extensive green roof system by comparing and analyzing the soil moisture content and growth response of Lychnis cognata according to the types of organic mulching materials. The experimental group consisted of a control group that did not use mulching material (Cont.) and a total of five treatment groups, including cocochip (C.O), woodchip (W.O), straw (S.T), and sawdust (S.A), depending on the mulching material. The soil moisture content according to the type of organic mulching material was high in the order of W.O > S.T > Cont. > C.O > S.A, and there was a significant difference especially in S.A. The plant height showed good growth in the order of S.T > Cont. > C.O > W.O > S.A, and there was no significant difference by mulching materials in other growth items except for plant height. Both the chlorophyll and plant water contents were superior to those of untreated group, so the treatment of organic mulching materials is considered to be effective in maintaining the chlorophyll and plant water contents of Lychnis cognata. In particular, the soil moisture content was affected by the characteristics of the mulching material itself. Based on these results, it is required to use a mulching material suitable for the characteristics of each plant in extensive green roof system and it is considered that this can be overcome through organic mulching when selecting a plant species that is weak to water stress.

  • This study was conducted to find out suitable rootzone profile, irrigation system, and turfgrass species for roof turf garden. Treatments of profile with soil amendment were Mixture I: Perlite(PL)60%+Vermiculite(VC)20%+Peatmoss(PM)20%, Mixture II: PL60%+VC 10%+PM20%+Sand(SD)10%, Mixture III: PL60%+VC20%+PM20% and Mixture IV: PL60%+VC10%+PM20%+SD10%+Styrofoam 5cm as a drain layer. To test trickle irrigation for roof garden, intervals of main pipe spacing(50cm, 100cm) and drop hole distance(15, 20, 30, 50 and 100cm)were treated, To select most suitable turfgrass species or mixture, Bermudagrass 'Konwoo', Zoysiagrass 'Konhee' and cool-season grass(Kentucky Bluegrass 80% + Perennial Ryegrass 20%, Tall Fescue 30% + KB50% + PR 20%)were tested. In particle size analysis, the soil amendments Perlite and vermiculite showed very even distribution, however, peatmoss contained mostly coarse particles with fiber over $\Phi$ 4.75mm. Under field moisture condition, vermiculite and peatmoss showed 350% water holding capacity, on the other hand, sand or Perlite showed 115% and 166%, respectively. Total weight of soil profile was 139.2kg/$m^2$ with Styrofoam drain layer without sand, which showed most lightest among treatments. Turf quality also resulted positve with Styrofoam drain layer installation. On trickle irrigation system, the proper interval of main drain pipe spacing and drop hole distance were 50cm and 50cm, respectively, In irrigation frequency, once per a day for 15 minute irrigation with 2 1/hr showed the best results on turf quality. Among turfgrass species or cool season grass mixture, warm season turfgrass fine leaf type zoysiagrass 'Konhee' and Bermudagrass 'Konwoo' showed very acceptable result on all over the treatments of rootzone and irrigation system. To apply cool season grasses for the roof garden, advanced researches may be needed to establish the proper soil amendment, rootzone profile, and irrigation system, Application of Bermudagrass 'Konwoo' for roof turf garden also needs successive tests to overcome winter injuries.

  • This study was to research the effective use of green rooftop space, facilities and gardening, targeting members from community rehabilitation centers with disabilities. The three community rehabilitation centers studied were, Namyangju Center located in a rural area, Seoul Center located in a urban area and Siheung Center located in both a rural and urban area. We analyzed the difference in preference on the basis of each local community area. In fact, it indicated that 50% of each center knew about the green rooftop at their facilities and its use as a place for taking walks and conversation. It also showed that there was the high preference for priority objects such as a bench, pergola and trash can. Also the preference for natural visualizations like herbal or ornamental plants. The study showed a high preference to a small vegetable plot, hands on gardening and ecological wetland. It also indicated that there was a high preference for experience in nature programs on the rooftops (28.9 %) versus the rate of horticultural programs (27%). Therefore, it proves that the composition of a green rooftop at a community rehabilitation center should be differentiated so that the green rooftop can be a place not only for resting, but also great for a natural learning experience and gardening therapy for people with disabilities.
