  • This paper presents an algorithm robust to error for estimating partial discharge (PD) location using acoustic emission sensors. In operating transformers, the velocity computing of the acoustic signal is difficult because the temperature of the Insulation oil is not homogeneous. So, some error occurs in the process. Therefore, the algorithm estimating PD location must consider this error to provide maintenance person with useful information. The conventional algorithm shows the PD position as a point, while the new algorithm using LookUp-Table(LUT) shows PD position as error-map visually. The error-map is more useful than the conventional result because of robustness to error. Also, we compared performance of them, by adding error to data on purpose.

  • It is important to localize trains precisely for the purpose of controlling them and there have been many studies designed to accomplish this without the need for wayside systems. Since trains run on fixed railway lines, it is possible to search in one direction to localize them. Moreover, it is also possible to know the shape of the line in advance. In the case of high speed trains, their speed and, therefore, their Doppler frequency is relatively high and the railway line is either linear or circular with a large radius. In this study, we utilize these features and propose a train localization method using the Doppler frequency of the signals transmitted from two points (base stations). We derive localization equations for a linear line, circular line, and mixed line (linear plus circular) respectively. Though Doppler radars are usually used to measure speed, the proposed method obtains the location information and the speed successively using the ratio of the doppler frequencies of two signals without knowing the location information or the speed. Computer simulations are performed to show the variation of the estimation error according to the train's location and the measurement error level. The conditions required to obtain the target error level and the increase in the estimation error according to the measurement error are compared between the proposed and conventional methods. The results show the superior performance and robustness of the proposed method.

  • The accuracy of exit poll mainly depends on the sampling method of voting places. For exit poll, we propose a probability sampling method of selecting voting places as an alternative to the bellwether polling place sampling. Through an empirical study based on the 2004 general election data, the efficiency of the suggested systematic sampling from ordered voting places was evaluated in terms of mean prediction error and it turns out that the proposed sampling method outperformed the bellwether polling places sampling. We also calculated the variance of estimator from the proposed sampling, and considered the sample size problem to guarantee the target precision using the design effect of the proposed sample design.

  • Adaptive array antennas are one of the most promising techniques for improving the capacity of CDMA mobile communication system. In this paper, the uplink and downlink capacity for asynchronous W-CDMA system with adaptive array antenna is analyzed when an angle estimation error is present. From the results, it is found that the capacities are decreased by the angle estimation error. Specifically, when 5 degrees of error is present at 9 element adaptive array, the capacities are found to decrease by 5.2% in the uplink and 11.6% in the downlink. Also, in this paper, an attempt for comparing the capacities on different channel environments has been made. However, it is found that the increase of the Rice factor hardly effects the capacity due to the power control.

  • Adaptive array antenna system estimates target signal, as making a null pattern toward the interference signal. However, receiving a coherent interference signal at adaptive array antenna system, as target signal is regarded as interference signal, the performance of system rapidly decreases. The main beam does not direct an incidence direction of target signal due to sensitivity in directivity error. This paper proposes beamforming algorithm which combines high order limit condition and directivity error modify method. And it minimizes degree of freedom and decreases interference signal and directivity error using proposed algorithm. This paper compares and analyzes the performance of proposed algorithm and general algorithm using simulation. In this paper, the proposed algorithm correctly estimates an incident angle, but general algorithm occurs an error of about $0.8^{\circ}$.

  • A compensation algorithm targeting for torque development from a SPMSM including a low speed operation is presented in this paper. As known, PM flux linkage in SPMSM is varied by temperature. Maximum Torque per Ampere (MTPA) uses the calculated PM flux linkage, and torque error occurs due to change of PM flux linkage. In the manuscript, estimated PM flux linkage is obtained using a stator flux observer. The torque error is corrected using the estimated PM flux linkage. The proposed algorithm is implemented and verified in simulation and experiment.

  • Recently, a target detection based on a distributed sensor network has been much studied in active sonar. Zhou et al. proposed a target localization method using line fitting based on a distributed sensor network which consists of low complexity sensors that only report binary detection results. This method has three advantages relative to ML estimator. First, there is no need to estimate propagation model parameters. Second, the computation is simple. Third, it only use sensors with "detection", which implies less data to be collected by data processing center. However, this method has larger target localization error than the ML estimator. In this paper, a target localization method which modifies Zhou's method is proposed for reducing the localization error. The modified method shows the performance improvement that the target localization error is reduced by 40.7% to Zhou's method in the point of RMSE.

  • In the next generation wireless communication systems, an energy harvesting from radio frequency signals is considered as a method to solve the lack of power supply problem for sensors. In this paper, we try to propose an efficient algorithm for simultaneous wireless information and power transfer in energy harvesting networks with channel estimation error. At first, we find an optimal channel training interval using one-dimensional exhaustive search, and estimate a channel using MMSE channel estimator. Based on the estimated channel, we propose a power allocation and splitting algorithm for maximizing the data rate while guaranteeing the minimum required harvested energy constraint, The simulation results confirm that the proposed algorithm has an insignificant performance degradation less than 10%, compared with the optimal scheme which assumes a perfect channel estimation, but it can improve the data rate by more than 20%, compared to the conventional scheme.

  • The studies to estimate the surface spectral reflectance of an object have received widespread attention using the multi-spectral camera system. However, the multi-spectral camera system requires the additional color filter according to increment of the channel and system complexity is increased by multiple capture. Thus, this paper proposes an algorithm to reduce the estimation error of surface spectral reflectance with the conventional 3-band RGB camera. In the proposed method, adaptive principal components for each pixel are calculated by renewing the population of surface reflectances and the adaptive principal components can reduce estimation error of surface spectral reflectance of current pixel. To evaluate performance of the proposed estimation method, 3-band principal component analysis, 5-band wiener estimation method, and the proposed method are compared in the estimation experiment with the Macbeth Color Checker. As a result, the proposed method showed a lower mean square error between the estimated and the measured spectra compared to the conventional 3-band principal component analysis method and represented a similar or advanced estimation performance compared to the 5-band wiener method.

  • Since it is well-established that even high quality data tend to contain outliers, one would expect fat? greater reliance on robust regression techniques than is actually observed. But most of all robust regression estimators suffers from the computational difficulties and the lower efficiency than the least squares under the normal error model. The weighted self-tuning estimator (WSTE) recently suggested by Lee (2004) has no more computational difficulty and it has the asymptotic normality and the high break-down point simultaneously. Although it has better properties than the other robust estimators, WSTE does not have full efficiency under the normal error model through the weighted least squares which is widely used. This paper introduces a new approach as called the reweighted WSTE (RWSTE), whose scale estimator is adaptively estimated by the self-tuning constant. A Monte Carlo study shows that new approach has better behavior than the general weighted least squares method under the normal model and the large data.
