Remediation of Polluted Soil by Plant (유용식물을 이용한 오염토양 정화기술 개발)

  • 광산지 및 쓰레기매립지의 오염토양을 정화하는데 식물의 이용가능성을 평가하기 위하여 강원도, 경상북도 지역에 분포하는 17곳의 폐광산과 강원도에 분포하는 농촌형 일반 쓰레기매립지 6곳을 대상으로 광산지와 매립지의 토양 특성을 조사하고, 서식 식물종의 오염 물질 제거 능력과 개척종으로서의 가능성을 평가하였다. 광산지 토양의 경우 산성화가 진행된 곳이 많았고, 중금속함유량도 전국 토양의 평균함유량보다 훨씬 높게 나타났으나, 매립지의 경우 약알카리성 토양이 많았고, 광산지와 달리 중금속 오염의 우려는 없었다. 오염토양에 서식하는 쑥을 포함한 14종의 식물체중에서 오염토양정화기술에 이용 가능한 유용식물로 Aremisia princeps(쑥), Micanthus sinensis(억새), Oenanthera odorata(달맞이 꽃)등이 중금속의 흡수력과 지상부로의 이행력이 큰 식물종으로 나타나 phytoremediation에 있어서 개척종으로 이용가능할 것으로 판단되었다.

  • 본 조사를 통해 토양오염유발시설 중 유류 유출사고가 잦은 주유소에서의 오염현황 조사방법과 오염토양에 대한 적정한 정화기법을 제시하고자 하였다. 오염현황 조사결과, 지층구조 는 전반적으로 Clay로 구성되어 있으나 오염토양 주변은 비교적 투수도와 통기성이 우수한 Silty Sand층을 나타내고 있었다. 본 주유소의 경우 주유기 주변(상층부)과 지하유류저장탱크 주변(수직분포)에 오염이 분포되어 있고, 오염원인은 주유기의 배관 파손 및 결함에 의해 발생한 것으로 예상된다. 본 조사지역에 대한 정화기법으로는 토양증기추출기술(SVE)과 불포화대를 생물학적으로 복원할 수 있는 바이오벤팅기술을 결합시킨 Bioslurping이 효과적일 것으로 평가된다. 또한 Bioslurry injection treatment를 병행하여 효과적으로 고농도의 오염토양을 처리하는 것이 바람직할 것으로 판단된다.

Application of Soil's Self-Decontamination Ability to Contaminated Ground (흙의 자체정화능력을 이용한 오염된 토양정화)

  • There are numerous approaches available to cleanup a contaminated surface and subsurface ground currently in use, however, these methods all classify the decontamination after the contamination has penetrated into the soil masses and is costly. Unlike these approaches, in this study, utilization of soil's self-decontamination ability by rearranging and preplanning of the topographical features and surface and subsurface drainage systems for the potential contamination sites before or during contamination process has been considered as an another cleanup method. Step by step explanations on why and how to develop the self-decontamination procedure is proposed in detail. Two examples are presented including contaminated saltwater intrusion along a coastal region and control or prevention of radioactive toxic radon gas ($^{222}Rn$) in residential areas. The effectiveness of the proposed systems to these two examples using the soil's self-decontamination ability is well illustrated.

Feasibility Test for Phytoremediation of Heavy Metals-Contaminated Soils using Various Stabilizers (중금속 오염토양에 대한 안정화 및 식물상 정화공법의 동시 적용연구)

  • In this study, to select the best stabilizer for the heavy metals-contaminated soil from a smelter area during phytoremediation, a plant uptake experiment and a soil stabilization were simultaneously applied using Pteris multifida Poir. and five pre-screened stabilizers(zeolite, Mn dioxide, slag, Ca oxide, and magnetite). The extracted heavy metal was measured and compared using a 3 step sequential extraction for the soil samples. The growth rate of the plant was also evaluated. The stabilizers stabilized heavy metals in soil and reduced the extraction rate. Magnetite and calcium oxide showed better results than other stabilizers. The stabilizers enhanced the growth of the plant. All the heavy metals except for arsenic were concentrated in roots while arsenic was concentrated in leaves of the plant. It is concluded that the stabilizers can minimize the heavy metal release from the contaminated soil during phytoremediation and stimulated the growth of plant. These effects of stabilizers could compensate for some weak points of phytoremediation such as reaching of heavy metals by rainwater.

  • 2007년 12월 7일 발생한 태안유류오염사고를 계기로 국내유류오염사고 현황을 알아보고, 유류오염 발생시 해양생태계에 어떤 영향을 미치는지 살펴본다. 또한 유류오염을 제거하기 위하여 긴급방제작업에는 어떤 기술이 적용되고, 어떤 문제점이 있는지 알아보고 이와 같은 문제점을 해결하기 위하여 생물정화기술 적용을 제안하며 이에 대한 상세한 방법을 설명한다.

Enhancement of Biodegradation Rate of Petroleum Hydrocarbons-contaminated Soil with Addition of Organic Composite Nutrients and a Chemical Oxidation (유기성 영양분 첨가 및 화학적 산화 연계를 통한 유류오염 토양의 생물학적 정화효율 향상에 관한 연구)

  • A biological study was conducted to evaluate the enhancement of landfarming of soil contaminated with petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) applying organic composite nutrients and a chemical oxidation during bioremediation. The target value of soil TPH after treatment was 500 mg/kg TPH. Addition of an organic compost and liquid swine manure for the removal of soil THP showed higher efficiency as 84.4% and 92.2% respectively than inorganic nutrients of 80.2%. In addition to the removal of non-biodegradable portion of residual hydrocarbons in soil, a chemical oxidation was applied during tailing period of the biological remediation, which showed high remediation efficiency as 98.1% compared with single bioremediation efficiency of 84.7%.

오염토양의 환경친화적 복구방안 - 위해성에 근거한 복원전략 -

  • 오염토양을 관리하는데 있어 현재 가장 중요하게 인식되는 부분은 오염물질이 정화되었다는 판정을 '어떤 기준으로 내리는 것이 합리적인가?'하는 것이다. 오염된 토양을 '어느 정도의 수준으로 복구를 하여야 하는가?'에 대한 의문이 학계와 산업계를 중심으로 꾸준히 제기되어 왔으며 미국의 경우, 환경청(Environmental Protection Agency) 등을 중심으로 그러한 물음에 대한 해답을 찾기 위한 본격적인 연구 및 조사활동이 활발히 진행되고 있다. 지금까지는 오염물질의 토양잔류농도와 획일화된 규제기준을 비교하여 오염여부를 판단한 후 복구여부 및 수준이 결정되어 왔는데 이러한 방법에 문제점이 있으며 현실적이지 못하다는 과학적 증거들이 발견, 축적되면서 이에 대한 대안이 모색되기 시작하였고 그 중의 하나가 '위해성에 근거한 복원전략(risk-based remediation strategy, RBRS)' 이라고 할 수 있다. RBRS는 오염토양의 정화기준을 결정하는데 있어 기존의 화학적 방법(즉, 토양잔류농도)뿐만 아니라 생물학적, 독성학적 방법도 같이 사용함으로써 오염물질의 실질적인 이용성에 따른 생독성을 평가하는 방법이다. RBRS의 가장 큰 장점은 오염물질의 종류뿐만 아니라 오염 지역의 특수성(예: 토지이용용도, 토양 및 지하수 특성, 수용체 집단의 특성 등)을 고려하여 오염물질의 위해성(risk) 여부를 판단하며 그 결과에 의거하여 오염지역의 정화 실시 여부 및 수준을 결정한다는 것이다. 따라서 RBRS에 의한 정화 및 복구사업은 과학적, 합리적, 경제적인 바탕 위에서 시행된다고 볼 수 있다. 이러한 장점들을 이유로 우리나라에서도 향후 오염지역의 정화에 RBRS와 같은 개념이 이용될 것으로 예상되며 학계를 중심으로 이에 대한 인식과 이해의 폭을 넓혀 나가야 할 것이다.

Feasibility study on remediation for railway contaminated soil with waste-lubricant (윤활유 유래 철도오염 토양의 정화 타당성 연구)

  • Railway-contaminated soil is categorized by total petroleum hydrocarbon(TPH)-related contamination and heavy-metal contamination. The sources of TPH are diesel and lubricant. In this study, the feasibility of soil washing, chemical oxidation and ultra-sonication were investigated to treat lubricant-contaminated railway soil. tergitol, a non-ionic surfactant, was investigated as a washing agent. However, it is not effective to remove lubricant from soil even though tergitol is most effective washing agent for diesel-contaminated soil. Addition of alcohols with surfactant enhanced slightly washing efficiency of the lubricant-contaminated soil. To remediate railway-contaminated soil, source of pollution should be considered.

Study of the Performance of a Dry Cleaning Method for Polluted Ballast Gravel of Railroad Fields (철도부지 오염도상자갈의 건식 정화 기술 성능 연구)

  • Ballast gravel in a railroad field is often polluted by grease and heavy metals. In this paper, the performances of a dry cleaning method for polluted ballast gravel in which pollutants on the gravel surface can be physically removed was extensively studied. A polluted ballast cleaning device able to shoot emery blasting media onto the surface using compressed air was prepared. Polluted ballast gravel was put into this device for cleaning, with the treatment time varied from 1 to 10 min. The cleaning efficiency of the total petroleum hydrocarbons and heavy metals were studied. The total petroleum hydrocarbon removal efficiency was 70-80% for gravels sampled from a locomotive waiting line, while it was 40-60% for gravels sampled from a turnout area. The heavy metal removal efficiency exceeded 90% for copper and lead, while it was 65-80% for nickel and zinc. This system was found to be effective for the remediation of polluted ballast gravels.

Assessment of the fonction of Retention Pond, A-71 Motorway, France (프랑스 A-71고속도로변 Retention Pond의 기능평가)

  • Retention ponds have been dug along some of the motorways to control water flow during rainstorms and to minmize environmental pollution. A retention pond located at Les Ardilleres about 20km South of Orleans along the A-71 motorway has been selected to evaluate the effectiveness of such a pond as a trap for heavy metals. Based on the "index of geoaccumulation" and the "enrichment factor" normalized to Fe introduced by Muller in 1979 and by Helz in 1976, respectively, the degree of contamination by heavy metals for the roadside soil and the settling particles was evaluated. As expected, the contamination was very severe in the roadside soil, while it was not so great in the settling particles. Using these methods, cadmium anomaly was traced in the settling particles of the retention pond, their occurrence being attributed partly to natural and partly to anthropogenic pollution. The estimated input of heavy metals associated with settling particles to the pond was 0.9 g/day Pb, 2.1 g/day Zn and 6mg/day Cd. A tentative mass balance of Pb and Zn originated by motor vehicles suggested that only 5 to l1% of heavy metals deposited on the surface of the motorway is carried to the retention pond by runoff water ; suggestions are made to improve their efficiency.ve their efficiency.
