  • As of 2018, Steel slag was generated approximately 24.23 million tons. Howeve, except blast furnace slag, steel slag is a typical by-product which does not have a clearly defined purpose in recycling. Thus, countries around the world are putting great efforts into developing a purpose for the recycling of steel slag. The vast habitat foundation of marine life has been destroyed due to recent reckless marine development and environment pollution, resulting in intensification of the decline of marine resources, and a solution to this issue is imperative. In order to propose a method to recycle large amounts of by-product slag into a material that can serve as an alternative to natural aggregate, the engineering properties and applicability for each mixing factor of environment friendly porous concrete as a material for the composition of seawater purification were in this study. Regarding the nutrient elution properties, it was clear that the nutrients continuously flowed out up to an immersion time by 8 months in natural seawater; the nitrogenous fertilizer displayed excellent elution properties in this regard.

  • This study was conducted to obtain quantitative data on the behavior of surface-applied urea to a paddy field which would help to protect against environmental pollution as well as to increase the efficiency of nitrogen fertilizer. The percolating water samples were collected with porous ceramic cups installed at 25, 50 and 75cm depths in a paddy field during the rice growing season(June 1992-September 1992) and analyzed for urea-N. NHAN and $NO_3-N$. In the paddy field to which urea fertilizer was applied at the rates of 12 and 24kg N/10a, the surface-applied urea was detected even at 75cm depth as the form of urea-N upto 12days after application. The maximum concentrations of urea-N in the percolating water sampled at 25, 50 and 75cm depths were the same irrespective of soil depth and the values were 0.06 and $0.12{\mu}g/m{\ell}$ for the application rates of 12 and 24kg N/10a respectively. The concentrations of $NH_4-N$ gradually decreased with time during the vegetative growth period : thereafter. the concentrations remained nearly constant. The maximum concentrations of $NH_4-N$ at 25cm depth were 1.2 and $5.6{\mu}g/m{\ell}$ for 12 and 24kg N/10a rate respectively. The $NO_3-N$ concentrations of percolating water ranged 0.1~0.5 and $0.2{\sim}0.5{\mu}g/m{\ell}$ for urea application rates of 12 and 24kg N/10a respectively. The nitrate concentration data suggest that nitrification process occurred continuously in paddy field during the rice growing season.

  • In the present study, safe management and value improvement of bamboo sunblind, which is an item of cultural heritage, were performed by adopting stable conservation treatment methods. The bamboo sunblind used in the present study was excavated from No. 1 catchment site in Baesanseongji, Busan. It was determined that the main material used to make the sunblind was bamboo, and herbal plants were used to weave the bamboo using lacquer as an adhesive agent. All contaminants and soil adhered to the sunblind was removed. Thereafter, the sunblind, which was recovered in the form of blocks, was washed separately after fixing it to a temporary plaster frame and to avoid the blocks from breaking during washing. Then, polyethylene glycol (PEG) impregnation was utilized for the reinforcement treatment. Based on the preliminary test results, the shape of the sunblind was fixed using a stainless-steel frame to prevent physical damage that may occur during the drying process. Thereafter, the bamboo sunblind was vacuum freeze-dried. PEG 20% (in ethyl alcohol) was applied as a surface treatment agent for stabilization the sunblind. After the surface treatment, the bamboo sunblind were joined together to fit the maximum width, and the rectangular shape of the sunblind was restored-as best as possible-while filling in the missing parts by maximizing the use of unknown members such as in the disturbed layers below bamboo sunblind surface. The conservation treatment was completed by fixing the bamboo sunblind into the fabricated frame.

  • As the pollution of water resources deteriorates due to industrialization and urbanization, it is difficult to supply clean water through a water treatment method using chlorine. Therefore, the introduction of advanced water treatment facilities using ozone is on the increase. However, epoxy which is used as waterproofing and anticorrosives and stainless steel used in conventional waterproofing and anti-corrosive methods have deteriorated because of the strong oxidizing power of ozone, causing problems such as leaking. Moreover, it even causes the durability degradation of a concrete. Therefore, in this study, metal spraying system was used as the means of constructing a metal panel with excellent ozone resistance and chemical resistance which is an easier method than an existing construction method. Ozone resistance was evaluated in accordance with the type of metal sprayed coatings to develop a finishing method which can prevent the concrete structure of water treatment facilities from deterioration. Furthermore, electrochemical stability in actual sewage treatment plant environment was evaluated. Experimental results showed that Ti has superior ozone resistance after spraying and the electrochemical stability in the sewage treatment plant environment showed that Ti has the highest polarization resistance of $403.83k{\cdot}{\Omega}{\cdot}cm^2$, which ensures high levels of durability.

  • Mycelial browning, which protects the organism from contamination and moisture loss, is essential for sawdust cultivation of Lentinula edodes. The effects of light and light wavelengths on the mycelial browning of the L. edodes Sanjo 701ho strain, and the characteristics of its brown hyphae, were investigated. After the mycelia were cultured on potato dextrose agar medium under fluorescent lamps covered with colored cellophane filters (red, green, and blue) or under light emitted diodes (LED), with wavelengths ranging from 400 to 700 nm (far-red, red, green, and blue), for 14 h per day for 40 days, the mycelial browning rate was measured. The wavelength of fluorescent lamps, which range from 300 to 1,100 nm, was reduced to 360 to 1,022 nm with the use of three colored cellophane filters and the photosynthetic photon flux density was reduced by 42 to 71 % depending on the light wavelength. The browning rate by colony area of mycelia exposed to light was at an average of 64 %, whereas, that of unexposed mycelia was only 5 %. The browning rate was 0.02 % in far-red, 1.5 % in red, 53.8 % in green, 57.3 % in blue, and 64.0 % in fluorescent light. The white mycelia were resilient with actively growing hyphae, filled with cytoplasm, and thin cell walls less than $1{\mu}m$ thick. Conversely, the brown mycelia possessed dead, hard hyphal structures without cytoplasm, but with approximately $2-4{\mu}m-thick$-thick cell walls. In conclusion, lights of varying wavelengths, especially short-wavelength LEDs, are effective for forming dead, brown mycelia of L. edodes, thus, forming a protective functional layer for its living white mycelia.

  • In platoon driving, several autonomous vehicles communicate to exchange information with each other and drive in a single cluster. The platooning technology has various advantages such as increasing road traffic, reducing energy consumption and pollutant emission by driving in short distance between vehicles. However, the short distance makes it more difficult to cope with an emergency accident, and accordingly, it is difficult to ensure the safety of platoon driving, which must be secured. In particular, the unexpected situation, i.e., variability that may appear during driving can adversely affect the safety of platoon driving. Because such variability is difficult to predict and reproduce, preparing safety guards to prevent risks arising from variability is a challenging work. In this paper, we studied a simulation method to avoid the risk due to the variability that may occur while platoon driving. In order to simulate safe platoon driving, we develop diverse scenarios considering the variability, design and apply safety guards to handle the variability, and extends the detail functions of VENTOS, an open source platooning simulator. Based on the simulation results, we have confirmed that the risks caused form the variability can be removed, and safe platoon driving is possible. We believe that our simulation approach will contribute to research and development to ensure safety in platoon driving.

  • Azolla is a genus of small aquatic ferns native to Asia, Africa, and America. Azolla is potentially significant as a nitrogen source in agriculture, particularly in conjunction with rice (Oryza sativa L.) cultivation. In addition, Azolla may either control weeds or act as a weed depending on management; therefore, we aimed to determine the effect of Azolla incorporation on weed (e.g., Monochoria vaginalis, Rotala indica, Aeschynomene indica, and Cyperus amuricus) control and its other benefits during rice cultivation. The effects of Azolla on weed emergence were evaluated based on plot area coverage by the Azolla mat, which appears as a green sheet over water, and the rate of weed emergence in paddy field. Weed occurrence was investigated 40 days after Azolla inoculation. Soil samples from the experimental plots were collected following harvest in 2014-2015, and analyzed. Moreover, rice growth, yield, and grain quality were measured. Azolla suppressed weed growth by 72%. Azolla mat incorporation in rice fields suppressed weed growth by over 60%. In addition, Azolla promoted nitrogen fixation. Compared with nitrogen management using chemical fertilizers, Azolla incorporation showed the potential for various positive effects, including the improvement of soil fertility by increasing total nitrogen, and organic matter content. Rice grown with Azolla maintained its yield without additional herbicide treatment. Moreover, the palatability of cooked rice was better when grown with Azolla.

  • For a slag-cement-bentonite (slag-CB) cut-off wall, GGBS replaces a part of the cement mixed to build a CB cut-off wall, which is used to block the flow and leakage of pollutants or groundwater; prevent seawater infiltration; and repair or reinforcement an aged embankments. Slag-CB cut-off walls are used in various applications in different fields where groundwater control is required due to its excellent characteristics. Such properties include high strength, low permeability, high durability and chemical resistance. However, despite these advantages, slag-CB cut-off walls are not extensively studied in Korea and thus are not applied in many cases. Particularly, GGBS, which replaces cement in a mixture, has different properties depending on its country of production. Consequently, it is necessary to perform various studies on slag-CB cut-off walls that use GGBS produced in Korea in order to increase its usability. This study has evaluated the bleeding rate, setting time, strength, and permeability in relation to the cement replacement rate of GGBS produced in Korea for slag-CB cut-off walls, with the aim to increase its usability. The evaluation found that slag-CB cut-off walls, made of a mixture containing GGBS produced in Korea, have a lower bleeding rate and permeability, and higher strengththan CB cut-off walls. It was also analyzed that such improved performance is more effective with a higher cement replacement rate of GGBS.

  • The AERMOD model was the most used, accounting for 89.0%, based on the analysis of the environmental impact assessment reports published in the Environmental Impact Assessment Information Support System (EIASS) between 2021 and 2022. The mismatch of versions between AERMET and AERMOD was found to be 25.3%. There was the operational time discrepancy of 50.6% from industrial complexes, urban development projects between used in the model and applied in estimating pollutant emissions. The results of applying various versions of the AERMET and AERMOD models to both area sources and point sources in both simple and complex terrain in the Gunsan area showed similar values after AERMOD version 12 (15181). Emissions are assessed as 24-hour operation, and the predicted concentration in both simple and complex terrain when using the variable emission coefficient option that applies an 8-hour daytime operation in the model is lowered by 37.42% ~ 74.27% for area sources and by 32.06% ~ 54.45% for point sources. Therefore, to prevent the error in using the variable emission coefficient, it is required to clearly present the emission calculation process and provide a detailed explanation of the composition of modeling input data in the environmental impact assessment reports. Also, thorough reviews by special institutions are essential.
