  • This study was performed to investigation the effect of austempering temperature on the mecanical properties and fracture Characteristic of the ductile cast iron with contains Cu and Mo. The obtained results of this study were as follows; Microstructure of austemped ductile cast iron obtained by austempering were low bainite with some martensite at $250^{\circ}C$, mixture of low and upper bainite at $300^{\circ}C$ and upper bainite at $350^{\circ}C$. With increasing austempering temperature, yield strength, tensile strength and hardness decreased, while the elongation and impact absorption energy increased. With increasing austempering temperature, fracture toughness value increased and mainly controlled by bolume fraction of retained austenite. The volume fraction of retained austenite increased and the fracture surface obtained fibrous and dimple with increasing austempering temperature.

  • Retained austenite in matrix of austempered ductile iron has been well-known as a parameter in controlling mechanical properties, but investigation to obtain quantitative relationship with mechanical properties lack. Therefore, this study executed austempering treatment at various temperatures on ductile iron alloyed with Mo, Ni, Cu. In consequence, microstructure of retained austenite transformed coarse, and quantity increased according as austempering temperature increased. After heat-treatment, microstructure of specimen alloyed with Ni was fine, and toughness improved. At austempering temperature up to $400^{\circ}C$, carbide precipitation started in retained austenite. In consequence, afforded cause of hardness increase, a lot of increase did not arise for coarse structure.

  • Austempered ductile irons(ADI) are characterized by their relatively high retained austenite content which has a significant effect on mechanical properties and performance, such as ductility, toughness, wear resistance and machinability. Austenitising treatment at $900^{\circ}C$ for $1{\sim}2hours$, and austempering treatment within the temperature range $240{\sim}400^{\circ}C$ on ductile cast iron alloyed with Cu and Mo were carried out, and the effects of retained austenite content on the mechanical properties and wear resistance were investigated. In consequence, the amount of retained austenite was found to be 13.5% at the austempering temperature of $240^{\circ}C$, and was increased 28% at $400^{\circ}C$. Tensile strength and hardness of austempered ductile iron were decreased as the retained austenite content increased, but elongation was increased. The retained austenite content at the austenitising time of 2hours was more than at 1hour. The amounts of rolling wear loss were increased as the retained austenite content increased, and the wear surface was become to be rough.

  • Effect of martensite on the mechanical properties of austempered ductile cast iron was investigated after obtained the martensite by subzero treatment. Retained austenite was transformed to martensite by subzero treatment, and with decreasing subzero treatment temperature, volume fraction of martensite was increased. With increasing of the volume fraction of martensite, tensile strength was increased and elongation was decreased, ratio of increasing of strength and decreasing of elongation was higher in case of specimens with lot's of Cu contents. With increasing of the volume fraction of martensite, hardness slowly increased until only about 5% and it rapidly increased in a straight proportion when it is above 5%, while impact value was rapidly decreased until about 7% but it had a little change when it is above 7%.

  • Influence of Si contents on the mechanical properties and microstructure of austempered ductile iron was investigated. Four different Si contents between 2.0 and 2.9% were used. Austenitizing was performed at $890^{\circ}C$ for 2 hrs and austempering temperatures were both 340 and $380^{\circ}C$ for 0.5, 1, and 2 hrs. Nodule content was more than $300/mm^2$ and nodularity was more than 90%. Microstructure was revealed using nital and retained austenite was measured by x-ray diffractometer. Tensile test, no-notch Charpy impact test and wear test were performed. Tensile strength was improved as Si content increased and both elongation and impact toughness had peak at 2.6%Si. The specimen austempered at $380^{\circ}C$ showed lower tensile strength than that of $340^{\circ}C$, but showed higher elongation. However, austempering temperature of $380^{\circ}C$ was desirable because that of $340^{\circ}C$ was close to lower bainite transformation. As austempering time increased, tensile strength and elongation were improved and optimum condition was obtained for 2 hrs heat treatment.

  • The effect of Ni addition, on the mechanical properties and fracture characteristics of Mo-Cu and Mo-Ni-Cu alloyed ductile iron austenitized at $900^{\circ}C$ and austempering temperatures of $250^{\circ}C$, $300^{\circ}C$ and $350^{\circ}C$. The tensile strength, yield strength and hardness are decreased and elongation and impact value are increased in both Mo-Cu and Mo-Ni-Cu alloyed austempered ductile iron, with increased austempering temperature. According to the austempering temperature are increased, the amount of retained austenite are increased. Maximum value of fracture toughness is obtained at $350^{\circ}C$ austempering temperature at this condition, the amount of retained austenite came to 40% in Mo-Ni-Cu alloyed ADI and 34% in Mo-Cu alloyed ADI. The fracture surface of ADI which had represented high toughness are showed a quasi-cleavage pattern and a dimple pattern with micro void. Comparing the fracture characteristics of Mo-Cu alloyed ADI with that of Mo-Ni-Cu alloyed ADI, the latter was superior to the former.

  • The effects of Si content on the variation of microstructure and processing window of austempered ductile cast iron were investigated. Four different Si contents between 2.42 and 3.37 wt.% were used. The influence of silicon on the microstructure and processing window of these materials were studied. Austenitizing was performed at $900^{\circ}C$ for 60min and austempering temperature were both $340^{\circ}C$ and $360^{\circ}C$ and austempering time were for 4min upto 119min and for 5min upto 160min respectively. After heat treatment, the evolution of stage I and stage II were performed by optical metallography, XRD, hardness test. The results showed that $t_2$ was delayed as Si contents was increased due to the fact that Si retarded the formation of cementite ($Fe_3C$). The high silicon content promoted the stability of the metastable two-phase combination of austenite and ausferrite.

  • The effect of sub zero treatment on the damping capacity in austempered ductile cast iron investigated. Austenite transformed in to martensite by subzero treatment, and with the decrease of subzero treatment temperature, volume fraction of martensite increased. Damping capacity of austempered ductile cast iron was highly increased by subzero treatment, with the decrease of subzero treatment temperature, damping capacity was slowly increased. With the decrease of subzero treatment time, damping capacity was rapidly increased to 30 min. and then slowly increased. With the increase of volume fraction of martensite, damping capacity rapidly increasing to 5% and then slowly increased.

  • The present study demonstrated the effects of processing variable and alloying elements on the processing window of austempered cast iron, one of the heat-treatable cast irons, in order to elucidate the relation between heat treatment and microstructure in terms of time and temperature. Such microstructure is strongly affected by austenitizing conditions and alloying elements. The size of processing window tends to increase initially with increasing austenitizing temperature from 1123 to 1173 K, followed by a decline in the reverse direction between 1173 and 1223 K. Thus, the optimized processing window with large frame was found at an austenitizing temperature of 1173 K. To determine the effect of Sn addition, the processing window in the sample was created by the addition of 0.08 wt.% Sn, which appeared larger than that without Sn and with 0.06 wt.% Sn.
