The Relationship between Health and Mind-Body State According to Five Colors Preference (오색(五色)선호도에따른 건강과 심신상태의 관련성 연구)

  • Purposes: The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between five viscera, environmental and seasonal changes, and their preference for five colors. Methods: The survey performed using the Chinese medicine constitution and the five cardinal colors (Red, Blue, Yellow, White, Black) paper. Results: The blood types distributions were A, O, B, AB, and others in order. The proportion of smokers(75.6%) and non-drinkers(25.6%). Their color preferences were highest in blue and the lowest in black, but not significant. The proportion of the viscera was stomach(45.3%), liver-lung, intestine, and heart, and the tastes were spicy(48.8%), sweet, sour, salty, and bitter in order. Blue was the highest in all. kidneys(8.3%) preferred red and bitter yellow. The change in mind(35.7%) was highest, followed by scary thoughts and their color preferences varied. The most preferred place was 'cold place,' and 'dry place' was low. The most preferred seasons were 'autumn (38.6%), and the lowest was rainy. And their colors preference were blue. The respondents(89.9%) were normal, 5.7% hypertension and 4.4% hypotension. Healthy people preferred blue (91.8%) and hypertensives yellow with not significant. The diabetics preferred blue and red(p<.04). Conclusions: In the questionnaire survey on the health and physical abnormalities of Seoul citizens, various distributions found in each category, and most of them preferred blue. The results indicated that the questionnaire and the five- colored preference were a little interrelated. However, the results are to be primary data for research in this field.

Study on the Effects of the Heat-clearing Herbs based on Five tastes and Effect Terms (오미(五味)와 효능 용어를 활용한 청열약(淸熱藥)의 효능 고찰)

  • Objectives : In this study, we tried to analyze the relationship between effect terms and five tastes in heat-clearing herbs. In order to analyze exactly, we also attempted to extract and refine the effect terms. And finally, we tried to infer the effects of each tastes and suppose new effects of each heat-clearing herbs based on their tastes. Methods : Firstly, we extracted the five tastes and effect terms among the heat-claearing herbs written in Herbology. After that, we divided each effect terms to single meaning term and refined them. We also grouped herbs by tastes and set the effect terms in the order of frequency. So we could analyze the relationship between the tastes and the effect terms and supposed the effect of each herbs. Results & Conclusions : We extracted 7 tastes and 87 effect terms. And they was refined to 63 effect terms. As the result of analyzing the effect terms based the tastes, all of heat-clearing herbs included the effects of heat-clearing and detoxification, regardless of tastes. The herbs which have the bitter tastes, included the effects of drying dampness, fire-purging and blood-cooling. And we supposed new effects in 10 kinds of herbs among them. The herbs which have the sweet tastes, included the effects of blood-cooling and fluid-engendering. The herbs which have the hot tastes, included the effects of inducing diuresis and swelling-dispersing. And we supposed new effects in 2 kinds of herbs, by analyzing the relationship between the tastes and effect terms.

A study on the literal research kimi - theory (기미론에 대한 문헌적 연구)

  • Kimi(氣味) means five tastes(五味), sour, bitterness, sweetness, hot taste and astringency, and four conditions(四氣), cold, hot, warm and cool, in the oriental medicine. This is defined based on yn-yang 5 evolutive phasis(陰陽五行), and 5 evolutive phasis on the change of season. Four seasons, spring, summer, autumm, winter are clearly different but, the rainy season(長夏) is not. In the thee of Ki (氣), not worm not hot(平) is included in addition to the four conditions that is because the rainy season is not differentiated clearly. KImi have realations to the four seasons, that is, warm and hot taste is considered as spring, hot and astringency as summer, not worm not hot and sweetness as rainy season, cool and sour as autumm, and cold and bitterness as winter. 4 conditions can be classified more detail, because the changes of the seasons are continuous. In the action mechanisms, Gardeniae Fructus reduces Heat of Insufficency Type(虛熱) of the upper class of medicinal herbs(上焦), and Rhel Rhizoma reduces Exessive Heat(實熱) of the under class of them(下焦). The assay methods for four groups medicines can be developed in three ways according to the indicators as follows. First, by the indicator which defines cold-acting medicine(寒性藥) such as Rhei Rhizoma, Coptidis Rhizoma, Scutellariae Radix, Gardeniae Fructus and is differentiated clearly from Hot-acting medicine(熱性藥) at the same time. Second, when the medicines are classified into another four groups as Drugs for Dispelling Internal Cold(溫裏藥), Drugs for Relieving Exterior Syndrome(解表藥), Drugs for Dispelling Phlegm(祛痰藥), Drugs for Regulatings Ki Flow(理氣藥), by the indicator which satisfies each group and is differentiated from other groups, at the same time. Third, by the indicator which has to be defined for each medicinal herb for four classification, individually.

Study on the Effects of the Blood-activating and Stasis-dispelling Herbs based on Five tastes and Effect Terms (오미(五味)와 효능 용어를 활용한 활혈거어약(活血祛瘀藥)의 효능 고찰)

  • Objectives : In order to infer the effect of blood-activating and stasis-dispelling herbs by the analysis of effect terms which have extracted and refined, based on five tastes. Methods : I extracted the effect terms and five tastes of blood-activating and stasis-dispelling herbs written in Herbology. Extracted effect terms was divided into single meaning term and was refined as typical term. After that, I sorted herbs according to the five tastes and find the most highly mentioned effect terms. And I infered each herb's effects based on the relationship between five tastes and most highly mentioned terms. Results & Conclusions : I extracted 5 tastes and 53 effect terms and refined it as 43 effect terms. As the result of analyzing the effect term based the tastes, blood-activating and stasis-dispelling herbs are usually have blood-activating and pain-relieving. The herbs that have the hot taste, have the effect of moving-qi, stasis-breaking and aggregation-dispersing. And I supposed new effects of 5 kinds of herbs among them. The herbs that have the sweet tastes, have the effect of stasis-dispelling. And I supposed new effects of 2 kinds of herbs among them by analyzing the relationship between the tastes and effect terms.

A Study on Reinforcing-reducing between Five Viscera and Five Tastes - Focus on 『FuXingJue』 - (오장(五臟)과 오미(五味)의 고욕보사(苦欲補瀉)에 관한 연구 - 『보행결(輔行訣)』을 중심으로 -)

  • Objectives : This is what tries to study irregular pairs between five viscera and five tatstes. And than tries to make convincing explanation. Methods : We analysed "SuWen ZangQiFaShiLun素問 藏氣法時論", "YiXueQiYuan醫學啓源", "TangYeBenCao湯液本草", "BenCaoGangMu 本草綱目" and "FuXingJueZangFuYongYaoFaYao輔行訣臟腑用藥法要". We found difference and similarities between these books. Result & Conclusions : "YiXueQiYuan", "TangYeBenCao", "BenCaoGangMu" inherit pairs between five viscera and five tatstes from "ZangQiFaShiLun". "YiXueQiYuan" had added examples of herbs to "ZangQiFaShiLun". "TangYeBenCao" had added examples of priscriptions to "ZangQiFaShiLun". "BenCaoGangMu" had added examples of herbs to "ZangQiFaShiLun". But new pairs between five viscera and five tatstes had suggested in the "FuXingJueZangFuYongYaoFaYao". We think that the new pairs are more logical than the others.

Cognition Enhancing Effect of Muskmelon (Cucumis melo) Extracts on Scopolamine-induced Memory Impairment in Mice (참외추출물이 스코폴라민 유도 기억상실 흰쥐의 인지능 회복에 미치는 효과)

  • The methanol extract of muskmelon (Cucumis melo) has been investigated for its cognition enhancing effects by evaluation of inhibitory activities on acetylcholinesterase, a degrading enzyme of acetylcholine, a brain neurotransmitter, and ${\beta}$- secretase, which forms the ${\beta}$-amyloid toxic protein from its precursor protein. A passive avoidance task, one of the animal model experiments for learning and memory, was also performed. As a result, the melon extract showed 15.8% and 35.3% inhibition on acetylcholinesterase and ${\beta}$-secretase, respectively, with a final concentration of 100 mg/ml. In the animal model test, melon extract significantly (p<0.05) lengthened the step-through latency time by 22.7% compared to the control group, suggesting that melon extract has, indeed, an effect on cognition enhancement.

  • Inflammation is localized response to foreign substance such as bacteria or in some instance to internally produced substances and has relation with immunity system. The macrophages plays a role in the development of the Iymphohaemopoietic system before and after birth, as well as in the natural and acquired immune responses of adult to immunogens, including infectious agents. NO have been suggested to play an important role in endotoxin-mediated shock and imflammation. In this study, we investigated the effect of Omisodok-eum on the production of NO. The Omisodok-eum inhibited the secretion of NO in LPS-stimulated mouse peritoneal macrophages, without affecting cell viability. The protein level of inducible nitric oxide synlhase(iNOS) in peritoneal macrophages was also decreased by Omisodok-eum. These results suggest that Omisodok-eum suppresses the endotoxin-induced inflammatory responses through inhibiting the production of NO

A Study on the Intonational Patterns in English Information Structures (영어 정보구조의 억양양상에 관한 연구)

  • Many researchers have argued about the relationship between information structure and intonation. Their results can be summarized in three main points: the intonation of topic and focus in English information structures is implemented as i) a pitch accent, ii) a tune (a pitch accent + (an) edge tone(s)), or iii) a boundary tone. The purpose of this paper is to study various intonational patterns of topic and focus in English information structures, using natural conversations. In this paper, the types of topics and foci are divided, based on contrastiveness. The topics are classified as five non-contrastive and four contrastive topics. The foci are classified as neutral focus, informational focus, and contrastive focus. The results show that the intonation of the topic in English information structures is mainly implemented as a pitch accent, except for the type of the pronoun topic (Lp) which is not implemented as a pitch accent or a tune. However, the intonation of the focus is implemented as a tune in the neutral focus (Fn) and as a pitch accent or a tune in the informational focus (Fi) and the contrastive focus (Fe). In our discussion and conclusion, we suggest that it is not always true that for the meaning of contrast, the topic or the focus is represented as a $L+H^{\ast}$ pitch accent, which has been the main contrastive intonation from earlier studies.

  • Filtering genes that do not appear to contribute to regulation prior to the statistical analysis of time course gene expression data can reduce the dimensions of data and the possibility of misinterpretation due to noise or lack of variation. In this paper, we compare six different functions for filtering genes with flat pattern under the percentile criterion on an observed sample and that on a bootstrap sample. The result of applying to the yeast cell cycle data shows that the variance function is most similar in both samples.
