  • The combustion characteristics of an EV (Environmental Vortex) burner (double-cone burner) adopted in a gas turbines are numerically investigated. The mixing of fuel and air is analyzed for reduction of NO emission. To predict the correlation between NO emission and fuel-air mixedness, 1-step and 2-step chemistry models are adopted. The results calculated by 1-step chemistry showed that NO emissions increased by 2% in the case of degraded mixedness and by 169% in the case of improved mixedness, where the temperature in the flame zone was overestimated upstream of the cone. However, the corresponding results calculated by 2-step chemistry showed that NO emission increased by 3% and decreased by 5%, where the flame zone was not formed inside the cone. The latter results agree well with the experimental ones indicating an increase of 63% and decrease of 11% in the respective cases. Despite quantitative errors, NO emissions can be predicted reasonably by the application of the 2-step chemistry model adopted here and design modification of burner for NO reduction can be proposed based on the numerical data.

  • In recently, studies concerned to the diesel engine uses a natural gas as a fuel oil whose infra has been built already was approached to PCCI or HCCI with keeping a high thermal efficiency and reducing NOx and PM have been researching actively in normally single cylinder. An ignition source is required to bum the natural gas by a spark plug in gasoline engines, due to a higher auto-ignition temperature of natural gas. Then gas oil and DME were introduced as the ignition source. In this study as basic data for practical use of natural gas PCCI and HCCI engines, combustion characteristics and emission characteristics on 4-cylinders natural gas PCCI and HCCI engines with gas oil and DME as ignition sources were analyzed and the engine load range that is main object for practical use of PCCI and HCCI engines was made clearly by empirical experiment.

  • The Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition(HCCI) combustion is currently under intensive investigation because of its potential to increase thermal efficiency while greatly decreasing NOx and p.M. In order to account for the thermal boundary layer effects, the two-zone model has been developed to analyze the combustion characteristics of HCCI engine. The detailed chemistry are represented by the GRI mechanism 3.0 involving 53 species and 325reactions. The present combustion model has been validated against the experimental results. Computations are also made for the wide-range operating conditions of HCCI engine.

  • It is critical to assess the characteristics of flame response to pressure perturbations for the understanding of nonlinear combustion instabilities. Previous studies can be grouped into flame response upon perturbed, fresh air and fuel mixture, and flame response directly perturbed from longitudinal waves. The present study presents experimental methodology for the understanding of the flame response exposed to transverse acoustic waves generated by loud speakers.

  • The structure of premixed turbulent flames in a constant-volume vessel was investigated using a microprobe method. The flame potential signal having one to eight peaks was detected in the case of turbulent flames, each of them being regarded as a flamelet existing in the flame zone. Based on this consideration, the flame propagation speed, the thickness of the flame zone, the number of flamelets and the separation distance between adjacent flamelets in the flame zone were measured. The experimental resuits of this work suggest the existence of "reactant islands" behind the flame front when the turbulence was intensified to some extent. The critical(lowest) ratio of turbulence intensity to the laminar burning velocity being found to be about 0.7 for the formation of reactant islands in this experiment.

  • A steady transonic dilute premixed combustion in a diverging channel is investigated by using asymptotic analysis. This model explores the nonlinear interactions between the near-sonic speed of the flow, the small changes in geometry from a straight channel, and the small heat release due to the one-step first-order Arrhenius chemical reaction. The reactive flow is described by a nonhomogeneous transonic small-disturbance (TSD) equation coupled with an ordinary differential equation for the calculation of the reactant mass fraction in the combustible gas. Also the asymptotic analysis reveals the similarity parameters that govern the reacting flow problem. The results show the complicated nonlinear interaction between the convection, reaction, and geometry effects and its effect on the flow behavior.

  • Premixed burner is a very strong candidate in household condensing gas boiler burner system because it has low CO and NOx emission with high thermal efficiency. The objective of this study was to determine combustion characteristics of cylindrical premixed burner using different baffle plate and flame holes. Results showed that cylindrical premixed flame mode could be changed into lift-off flame, blue flame, red flame, and green flame with increasing equivalence ratio. In particular, blue flame was found to be very stable at heating load of 8,82~35,280 kcal/h. NOx emission was under 26 ppm between 0.775 to 0.813 of equivalence ratio. CO emission was under 58 ppm under the same equivalence ratio. Thermal efficiency, a very important index in condensing gas boiler, was found to be above 90.13% under the same equivalence region.

  • In order to investigate the effect of premixed gasoline, diesel fuel, and n-heptane charges on the combustion and exhaust emission characteristics in a direct injection (DI) diesel engine, the experimental studies are performed. The premixed fuels are injected into the premixing chamber that installed upstream of the intake port in order to minimize the inhomogeneity effect of premixed charge. The injection nozzle for directly injected fuel is equipped in the center of the combustion chamber. The air temperature control system is equipped in the intake manifold to examine the effect of air temperature. The experimental results of this study show premixing fuel is effective method to reduce the NOx and soot emissions of diesel engine. NOx emissions are linearly decreased with increasing premixed ratio for the three kinds of premixed fuels. The heating of intake air $(80^{\circ}C)$ reduced the deterioration of BSFC in high premixed ratio, because it promotes evaporation of premixed diesel droplet in the premixing chamber.

  • In this study confirmed the reduction effect of pollutant by applying Fi-EGR and FPI-EGR to hybrid combustion system realizing premixed flame and non-premxied flame at once. The results showed that NOx emission index decreased significantly in case of adopting EGR. Additionally, the hybrid combustion system with EGR resulted in a better performance compared to usual non-premixed combustion system such that it can reduce $NO_x$ emission at equivalent EGR ratios. Especially, in the case of 25% of FI-EGR ratio at hybrid combustion system that the ratio of non-premixed and premixed is 50 : 50, NOx emission index reduction rate was about 59% compared to $NO_x$ emission of non-premixed combustion system without EGR and in the case of 15% of FPI-EGR ratio at hybrid combustion system that the ratio of non-premixed and premixed is 70 : 30, $NO_x$ emission index reduction rate was about 48% compared to $NO_x$ emission of hybrid combustion system without EGR.
