The purpose of this study was to analyze pre-service chemistry teachers' view of learning focused on the influence of science education courses that pre-service chemistry teachers had learned. Three pre-service chemistry teachers were selected for this study. Documents related to science education courses, survey data about their view of learning and interview data were collected, transcribed and analyzed. According to this study, pre-service chemistry teachers had changed, modified, maintained and strengthened their view of learning while they took the science education courses. Pre-service teacher K and P had changed their traditional view to the constructive view and then had modified their view by adding the reality. And pre-service teacher H had modified his constructive view with some traditional view. All Pre-service teachers had modified their own view of learning because of the science education course that emphasized the real field situation. As discussed above, science education courses focused on the applying the theory to real teaching situation gave the opportunity to modify pre-service teachers' own view of learning. It implied that the science education courses learned in the teachers college have to include contents based on real teaching situation and pre-service teachers' reflective thinking processes for establishing their view of learning and customized teaching activities.
This study investigated the change of pre-service science teachers' epistemological views of education according to the stages of the field education programs application. For this study, surveys and interviews were carried out threes times before and after participation through participant observation of classes and teaching practices. All data recorded and collected of 28 pre-service science teachers who had answered entire surveys were transcribed and analyzed. The conclusion is as follows; before the participant observation of classes, the pre-service science teachers had views of traditional education affected by epistemology of objectivism. After the participant observation of classes, the views of traditional education increased due to in-service teachers that showed teaching methods through the course of the participant observation. However, it was changed significantly into the views of modern education affected by epistemology of constructivism through the course of the teaching practices. Based on the conclusions of this study, it was identified that the field education programs might have both positive and negative influence on the change of the views of education for the pre-service science teachers. Therefore, Pre-service science teachers should have a opportunity to intensify of constructivism epistemological views of education through the field education programs. The teacher training institutions have to provide systematic and organic cooperation with schools.

The purpose of the study is to explore the types and coping methods of dilemmas that pre-service science teachers experience during student teaching. For this, we collected 131 dilemma journals that 34 pre-service science teachers wrote during a four-week period of student teaching. Results show that first, there are five categories of dilemmas, they are, 'Which science teacher should I be?', 'What is good science teaching?', 'How should I build relationships with the people around me at school?', and 'Who am I as a student teacher?'. Second, pre-service science teachers' status as a students-teachers made them cope with dilemmas passively. Third, when they cope with the dilemmas, student-teachers considered the dilemmas as conflicts of irreconcilable alternatives rather than opportunities of conciliation and compromise, therefore, most pre-service science teachers choose just one alternative and only 20% of dilemmas are resolved by compromise choice. Finally, dilemmas which showed the features of science teaching are the dilemmas related to scientific inquiry teaching and science teaching-learning model. Based on the results, we discussed the implications for teacher education.
This study examined the influences of current education programs for preservice chemistry teachers upon preservice science teachers' self-images as science teachers by using Draw-A-Science-Teacher-Test Checklist (DASTT-C). Seventy-two juniors and fifty-three seniors were selected from the department of chemistry education or department of science education (chemistry major) in three colleges of education. DASTT-C was administered to the juniors before having science education courses, and to the seniors before and after teaching practices. The results revealed that preservice science teachers' self-images as science teachers were more ‘teacher-centered' than ‘student-centered'. Only a few preservice science teachers exhibited ‘student-centered' images after having science education courses including the contents on constructivism. The self-images of some preservice science teachers even changed from ‘student-centered' to ‘teacher-centered' after having teaching practices. Many preservice science teachers answered that the main factors affected to their self-images as science teachers were prior teaching-learning experiences and/or the lim itations in the real situations. Educational implications of these findings are discussed.

Pre-service science teacher education is important to elaborate the quality of science teaching and learning in schools. Therefore, many pre-service science teacher education researches have been done in Korea. However, almost no research has comprehensively reviewed those literatures including secondary teacher education context. This study reviewed 410 pre-service science teacher education researches in Korea, from 1995 to 2021 published by 17 journals in KCI. The trends were analyzed with respect to the number of article according to period, keyword frequency, and qualitative features. The qualitative features were coded in multiple aspects of pre-service teachers' type, major, subject-matter in research context, research approach, data type, and the number of participants. The results indicate that the number of research articles has increased by about 40 for every 5-year period. JKASE has published most articles, and the diversity of journals has increased since 2010. Keyword frequency revealed that scientific concepts, science teaching efficacy, nature of science, and other teaching and learning contexts were emphasized. In qualitative features, the most frequent pre-service type was secondary in 'general' science context. For research topic, 'pre-service teacher education program' and 'perception and cognitive domain' were the most frequent. Most of the articles have 'analyzed' the phenomena or consequence of educational issue. Most research was conducted with 11 to 30 participants. These patterns of qualitative features have differed according to period, and types of pre-service teacher. Suggestions for the future pre-service science teacher education research topic were explored, such as policy-administrative research, integrated science teacher education, teacher agency, and environmental education.
In this study, pre-service science teachers' difficulties in teaching practice were investigated from the perspectives of pre-service teachers and cooperating teachers. Nine pre-service teachers who were attending a department of chemistry education at a college of education in Seoul and participated in teaching practice, and two of their cooperating teachers participated in the study. Teaching practice were observed, documentary data were collected, and interviews were conducted. The collected data were analyzed using analysis method of grounded theory. As results of the analysis, the pre-service teachers had difficulties in preparing and executing lessons which include experiments, because education related to experiments in middle and high schools was insufficient at the college of education and environments of cooperating school were unfamiliar to them. They had difficulties in encountering various responses from students in student-centered activities and tried to control students. Cooperating teachers did not provide specific assistance to ensure the autonomy of pre-service teachers, so that pre-service teachers suffered. Guiding science club activities was a meaningful experience to pre-service teachers, but it was a burden on both pre-service teachers and cooperating teachers. Educational implications of these findings were discussed.

The teacher's role in education is important. Science education majors must be able to solve problems effectively and pertinently when facing new ones in various situations and complicated human relations in order to become successful science teacher. The purpose of this research is to develop a test that measures the Practical Ability of pre-service science teachers and to apply this to them. The Practical Efficacy Scale for Science Education Majors was also developed in order to be used for validation. In this research, Practical Ability of Science Education Majors consisted of four sub-domains: subject education, business administration, relations and self-development. The result of the correlations between the scores of four sub-domains and the composite score of Practical Ability Test for Preservice Science Teacher(PATPST) is relevant. Subject education and administration business is the highest correlation with PATPSP score specially, and correlation between two areas appeared high. The result of applying PATPSP scores differed according to the grade of science education majors, but not according to their majors. This study's limitation is that the subjects consisted only of female students. However, PATPSP could be a new method that will help science education majors be successful science teachers.
This study aims to 1) verify the validity of the Science self-efficacy scale and 2) perform a latent mean analysis of the background variables about a pre-service teacher. The study uses pre-tests to analyze data from 187 pre-service teachers, which uses Tark's Science self-efficacy scale (2011). To identify the factor structure, exploratory factor analysis was performed. Based on the results of the pilot test, the expert group council revised the scale for the pre-service teachers to respond to the 3-factor structure. In the main test, 354 data were analyzed through a modified Science self-efficacy scale, and exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses were performed. The results of the study are as follows: First, in the pilot test, the pre-service teacher responded to a 3-factor instrument, but the validity of two items was examined further below. Second, the pre-service teachers responded to a 3-factor instrument on 29 items for the modified Science self-efficacy scale. The total reliability of the instrument was .886 and the reliability of each factor was analyzed as .882-.886. Finally, the latent mean analysis by gender showed that females have a higher self-regulation efficacy factor and males have a higher self-confidence factor (Cohen's d > .3). Furthermore, there is a significant difference in task difficulty preference and self-regulatory efficacy factor (Cohen's d > .8) between the college preparatory and science subject preference. This study provides important insights into and contributions to the accurate scientific self-efficacy diagnosis of pre-service teachers, as well as proposes a curriculum to improve the scientific self-efficacy of prospective teachers.

In this study, pre-service elementary teachers (n=68) participated in an inquiry of exploring children's science ideas as group work. After conducting interviews with children, the pre-service teachers analyzed their science ideas on specific concept and propose a teaching plan based on their findings. This paper aimed to find the positive learning experiences of the pre-service teachers by looking into their inquiry process. Questionnaire, researcher's journal, classroom videos and final reports were collected and analyzed for this multiple case study. Four representative groups were chosen and interviewed after submitting their final reports for in-depth understanding of their inquiry process. The positive learning experiences found in the process of their inquiry into children's science ideas were as follows: (1) exploring children's ideas have brought the opportunity for enhancing pre-service teachers' science content knowledge. (2) the pre-service teachers developed their ability in creating questions that probe into children's understanding. (3) the pre-service teachers recognized that children have various incomplete and unstable science ideas. (4) the pre-service teachers could suggest teaching strategy based on their findings.
This study investigated the aspects of how three preservice elementary school teachers conducted the data-text transforming discourses in their science simulation teaching and how their epistemological conversations worked for learners' construction of scientific knowledge. Three preservice teachers, who had presented simulation teaching on the seasonal change of constellations, participated in the study. The results revealed that one preservice teacher, who had implemented the transforming discourses of data-to-evidence and model-to-explanation, appeared to facilitate learners' knowledge construction. The other two preservice teachers had difficulty helping learners construct science knowledge due to their lack of transforming discourses. What we should consider for improving preservice elementary school teachers' teaching competencies was discussed based on a detailed comparison of three cases of preservice teachers' data-text transforming.
