  • It is no longer an issue that there is a big audience for Korean movies. More than 120 Korean movies are made each year. Many win prizes at film festivals around the world. But the number of animation movies made in Korea is decreasing even though the government tried to revitalize the animation industry in the mid-1990s. The problem is that all Korean animation movies were box-office failures, even though "Mary's Story" and "Oseam" were awarded prizes in world-famous animation festivals. Korean animation movies also face hurdles because of different cultural tastes of Korean audiences and problems with distribution. But there is a tremendous amount of potential and possibilities for Korean animation movies to be box-office blockbusters and artistic successes. There are ways to develop and revitalize the Korean animation industry and make it of the most important businesses and cultural influences in Korean society.

  • Over the years(1971 to 1987), only 20 Korean film production companies had been granted the exclusive rights to make Korean films in Korea and to import foreign films with a quota system. They had been making trashy Korean movies to secure import quotas of foreign films. Newcomer's entry of market had also been limited and the growth of Korean films through innovation had been hampered. In the same period, The annual number of Rookie director is 10, the portion of debut films of all Korean films is 10.62%, and the audience portion of debut is only 10.5% of Korean movie audience. From 2004 to 2016, total number of rookie directors is 874, and 61.72% of 1,416 directors who made his debut over the 46 years from 1971 to 2016. This is far more than the number of directors who debuted for the last 32 years. From 2004 to 2016, the annual number of rookie directors is 62.15 and their debut film occupies 39.58% of the total amount of Korean movies released and 32.8% of the audience number. Since the full opening of the domestic market to foreign films industries in 1988, the liberalization of independent film production in 1999, as a result of innovation of a competitive system, the Korean movies have been loved by audiences. However, there are concerns that the decline of the screen quota in 2006, the monopoly of the 4 major distributors, increase in indie movies and Semi-adult movies for VOD, could be the potential threat for future innovation in Korean cinema.

  • This study was conducted to improve the classification schemes of KDC in the fields of motion picture materials. Classification schemes of the KDC, DDC and LCC for motion picture materials were analyzed and compared. From the results, KDC was found to be the least suitable classification system to handle motion picture materials because it had very poorly detailed subdivisions of items and incomplete subsidiary tables to develop some subject items to represent various aspects of motion picture fields. Some suggestions to cover the deficiencies of KDC for motion picture fields were made in terms of 9 subdivisions and 53 sub-items. Particularly, new subdivisions of ‘types of genre', ’motion picture festival', 'worldwide motion pictures' and ’people related to motion pictures' were added.

  • This paper aims to explore and shed light on how the rise of streaming services has been affecting the media landscape in the recent years by looking at the conflicts between the Hollywood film industry and Netflix. It especially examines Netflix's disregard for the theatrical release, as it is the most portentous issue that could reshape the film industry, and Hollywood's opposition to it as revealed through the 2019 Academy Awards where the issue was brought into sharp relief. At the same time, this paper also questions whether theatrical distribution makes a film any more cinematic by examining how Hollywood film production has been largely concentrated on tentpoles and franchises, while Netflix has been producing diverse films often shunned by the studios. In this light, it concludes the changes wrought by Netflix, including its bypassing of the theatrical release, are not likely to be reversed.

  • VR image content producers are now terrestrial broadcasters, movie studios, game companies, and VR content producers (productions). As the VR market begins to form, investment in VR image content production is also expanding. The terrestrial KBS 'Summter VR' has been produced steadily from 2016 to 2017. 2D and VR images were simultaneously broadcast. If we compare and analyze these two image data, we could get a meaningful presentation. In this paper, 'Summter VR' is analyzed by cutting the image by time. "Summter VR" was using a long take for an average of 30 seconds or more, and at the same time, it was choosing a beautiful place so as not to fall into the boredom of long take directing. Most of the images of 'SummterVR' were long take techniques using the mise en scene VR technique.
