  • Over the years(1971 to 1987), only 20 Korean film production companies had been granted the exclusive rights to make Korean films in Korea and to import foreign films with a quota system. They had been making trashy Korean movies to secure import quotas of foreign films. Newcomer's entry of market had also been limited and the growth of Korean films through innovation had been hampered. In the same period, The annual number of Rookie director is 10, the portion of debut films of all Korean films is 10.62%, and the audience portion of debut is only 10.5% of Korean movie audience. From 2004 to 2016, total number of rookie directors is 874, and 61.72% of 1,416 directors who made his debut over the 46 years from 1971 to 2016. This is far more than the number of directors who debuted for the last 32 years. From 2004 to 2016, the annual number of rookie directors is 62.15 and their debut film occupies 39.58% of the total amount of Korean movies released and 32.8% of the audience number. Since the full opening of the domestic market to foreign films industries in 1988, the liberalization of independent film production in 1999, as a result of innovation of a competitive system, the Korean movies have been loved by audiences. However, there are concerns that the decline of the screen quota in 2006, the monopoly of the 4 major distributors, increase in indie movies and Semi-adult movies for VOD, could be the potential threat for future innovation in Korean cinema.

  • Director Choi Donghoon is the most famous director in Korea as a box office successor, especially (2102) has gained No. 1 box office attraction in Korean film history. However some critics have criticised the works of Dr. Choi because of their plebeianness. This paper focused on the reason of interaction with audiences through the theory of carnival of Mikhail M. Bakhtin. Because the theory of carnival is not only the adapted method to account for the power of popular culture to M. Baktin but also the useful method to understand the keys of interaction of Dr. Choi's films. It's not difficult to find the esthetic elements of carnival theory example for 'dethronement & coronation', 'overturn & ridicule', 'image of feast', 'language of square' in the films of Choi which are The Big Swindle(2004), Tazza: The High Rollers(2006), Woochi(2009), The Thieves(2012). Therefore this paper has endeavored that the box office attraction and success of communication with audiences is due to the realistic attitude and social reflection of Choi's films.

Such similar elements are largely divided into three units from a mass of story to a very small camera angle. Those can be explained as Formula, Convention, and Iconography. Among those three, convention means custom and it is a structure or an incident in which one story can be divided into second one. Convention is an incident visualized in individual genre, and a movie director tunes audiences through the incident. The director leads a familiar story but all of a sudden, he transforms the familiar scene to a new story. As a product established from the beginning of movie history, movie convention helps communication between audiences and a director. Audiences familiarize themselves with movie convention through repeated activities of watching movies, and the director utilizes it to provide audiences with familiarity. Director Bong Joon-ho not only tunes audiences through traditional convention but also creates a new art work through transformation of convention. • This study explores four Korean films: Silenced (2011), Unbowed (2012), The Attorney (2014), and New Trial (2017). Based on these films, this study explores the features of courtroom films and their social significance on society. The ability of Korean courtroom films to have such a profound impact on Korean society is something that is not usually witnessed in other countries. Also, the fact that they are low-budget works, not action/thrillers within the 'guaranteed star' system, and the fact that they present opportunities for netizens to call for change is a defining feature of Korean courtroom films. All four films have sparked controversy over the level of realism in Korean courtroom films, but what is more important is the way in which they portray contemporary social change. In summary, these four Korean courtroom films highlight the characteristics of social action and the means of mobilization required to effect it.
