  • Recently, many countries are promoting the rapid development of marine for securing territorial sea. The importance of territorial sea has being emphasized as territorial disputes among countries has been increasing. The South Korea should be encouraged to expand the territory due to territorial disputes with neighborhood countries. The purpose of this study is to derive a improvement plan for the efficient control of the territorial base point through analyzing the existing territorial base point and checking the territorial base point. Therefore, we proposed a variety of new plans for accurate positioning by sea level observation and MBES, reduced the surveying procedure through analyzing the existing territorial base points and provided a basis for the territorial base points which can be the 2nd grade national control points by improving a grade. We also suggested that the territorial base points and sub-territorial base points' database should be given standardized number for increasing the efficient management of other national control points and territorial base points. Finally, we suggested a improved work regulation about analysis and maintenance for territorial base points, the information activity of territorial base points and the new plan of community relations. This study will be a basis for the foundation of maritime territory which could be superior to other countries and the expansion of maritime territory.

  • This study examines American geography educators' familiarity and knowledge of Korea, their perception on sovereignty education, and their knowledge on Korea's sovereignty issues using the survey conducted at the annual conference of the National Council for Geographic Education (NCGE) in the United States in 2010 and 2012. This study also analyzes how much these knowledge and perception influence on values of sovereignty education and Korea's sovereignty issues and further investigates proper educational approaches on territorial issues in Northeast Asia. Knowledge on the geography of Korea of American geography educators is higher than their knowledge on Korean culture. Both experiences attending educational programs about Korea and visiting Korea further enhance their knowledge on the geography of Korea and Korean culture. They agree the importance of sovereignty education in geography education and believe that sovereignty education should promote students' sense of patriotism and encourage students to be global citizens who promote public interests. However, they value less on teaching on the economic value of their own country's territory and students' ability to understand territorial conflicts with other countries. American geography educators' perception on sovereignty education improves their familiarity with and knowledge of Korean territorial issues. This study identifies that providing opportunities to learn about Korea and Korean territorial issues can maximize geography educators' accessibility to Korean territorial issues, regardless of their interest in territorial issues. These findings help Korean government develops better strategies for formulating and implementing future international public relations practices for Korean territorial issues.

  • When the 60-ton-class patrol boat '72' of the Korea Coast Guard (KCG) was on duty and she accidentally collided with another patrol boat ('207', 200-ton-class) and sank. A month-long search found a small amount of lost items, but neither the crew nor the ship was found. For the first time in 39 years since the accident, the Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology (KIOST) searched the boat 72 using the latest integrated geophysical techniques. A number of sonar images presumed to be of a sunken ship was acquired using a combined system of side scan sonar and marine magnetometer, operated at an altitude of approximately 30 m from the seabed. At the same time, a strong magnetic anomaly (100 nT) was detected in one place, indicating the presence of an iron ship. A video survey using a remotely operated underwater vehicle (ROV) confirmed the presence of a shielding part of a personal firearm at the stern of the sunken vessel. Based on these comprehensive data, the sunken vessel discovered in this exploration was assumed to be '72'. This result is meaningful in terms of future ocean exploration and underwater archaeology, as the integrated system of various geophysical methods is an efficient means of identifying objects present in the water.

  • This paper aims to provide a conceptual framework to see the special zones in East Asia in relation to the territorialities of the state. For this, it will introduce Aihwa Ong's notion of 'spaces of exception', and provide some critical discussions on it. Unlike Ong, I do not see the spaces of exception as an outcome of neoliberal changes of the state. Instead, I propose to see the special zones in terms of the internal limitations of the modern state territoriality. In particular, I try to theorize the special zones in relation to the dialectics of the contradictory relations between mobility and fixity inherent in the territoriality of the modern nation state. In addition, it will be suggested to see special zones as an essential part of the spatiality of the East Asian developmental states, given the spatio-temporal contexts of the East Asian capitalist development. On the basis of these theoretical discussions, this paper will divide the special zones that have been developed in East Asia since the 1960s into 3 different types, including 1) developmentalist special zones, 2) neo-liberal special zones, and 3) special zones for transition, and discuss their characteristics.
