This study aimed to explore the effects of private tutoring expenses, parents' monitoring affection, their children's learning value and self-regulated learning abilities on middle-school boys' and girls' English Math academic achievement. The subjects were the 3rd middle-school 1,123 students taking the private tutoring of English and Math who participated in the Korea Child Youth Panel Surveys(KCYPS). The data were analyzed with descriptive statistics, correlations and hierarchical regressions. The main results of this study were as follows. Firstly, regardless of middle-school students' sex, as monthly average private tutoring expenses were more, the levels of parents' monitoring, and their children's learning value self-regulated learning abilities were higher, so middle-school students' academic achievement was higher. Secondly, regardless of middle-school students' sex, their self-regulated learning abilities were the highest predictors of English Math achievement. Also, their learning value and parents' monitoring influenced middle-school boys' English Math achievement in order. On the other hand, monthly average private tutoring expenses influenced middle-school girls' English Math achievement. Furthermore there were no moderating effects of parents' monitoring affection, their children's learning value and self-regulated learning abilities between monthly average private tutoring expenses and middle-school boys' and girls' English Math achievement. Finally, based on the results, the importance of parents and Home Economics was suggested in attaining middle-school students' higher academic achievement. Especially, Home Economics can play an important role of enhancing middle-school students' self-regulated learning abilities and learning value necessary for middle-school students' higher academic achievement.

This study investigates the relationship between syntactic complexity and English proficiency for Korean college students, using the recently developed TAASSC(the Tool for the Automatic Analysis of Syntactic Sophistication and Complexity) program. Essays on the ICNALE(International Corpus Network of Asian Learners of English) corpus were employed and phrasal complexity indices and clausal complexity indices, respectively were used to predict English proficiency level for Korean students. Results of stepwise regression analysis showed that indices of phrasal complexity explained 8% of variance in English proficiency, while indices of clausal complexity accounted for approximately 11%. That is, indices of clausal complexity were slightly better predictors of English proficiency than indices of phrasal complexity, which contradicts Biber et at.(2011)'s claim that phrasal complexity is the hallmark of writing development.

세계인구 60억중 17억이 영어를 사용하고 있으며 유럽연합시민은 절반 이상이 영어를 구사할 수 있다고 한다. 새 천년 세계화시대에는 영어를 자유롭게 구사하지 못하면 세계인들과의 경쟁에서 패배할 것은 불보듯 뻔한 일이다. 그래서 우리 KAIST는 학생들의 영어실력 향상과 세계적 수준의 대학으로 발돋움하기 위해 99학년부터 전체강좌의 15%를 영어로 진행하고 외국인 학생을 적극 유치하고 있다. 영어에서 해방되면 국제인으로서의 능력을 발휘하여 우리나라 과학기술의 발전에도 큰 밑거름이 될 것이기 때문이다.

이 논문의 목적은 일본 학생들의 영어 청취 능력에 대한 확실한 평가를 내릴 수 있는 청취판별테스트를 개발하는 데에 있다. 이 테스트를 통하여 일본사람들이 범하는 청취 오류를 평가, 분석하고 일본어의 음성·음운체계가 이러한 오류에 미치는 영향을 평가한다. 테스트의 결과는 청취 및 발음훈련에 적용될 수 있으므로 일본인의 영어 능력을 향상시키는데 공헌할 수 있을 것이다.

Importance and necessity is enlarged due to globalization. So, English education is diverse and recently applies AR(Augmented Reality) technology to offer immersion and interest. Contents in this paper are Mobile AR contents for training infant English cognition. Our system displays teaching aid objects into 3D models, lets infants listen to English conversation and teaches them everyday English like a play. Considering infants that like games, this system adds an English game about each object of teach aids. To attract infants and parents interest persistingly, We give them immersion and interest by suggesting a different event at each step.

Problem-based learning (PBL) is applied to various subjects for the sake of learners' creative thinking, problem-solving skills, presentation skills, confidence, self-directed learning, cooperation, and for the communication skills required in a rapidly changing society. Among them, the English language-an official language-is invested in 2.3 times more than other subjects, according to the English education company Yoon's Teacher. Therefore, PBL is an important learning method. However, the reality is that teacher-centered instruction, acquiring knowledge of the best answers only, and traditional evaluations are the main subjects. In order to supplement these weak points, this study designed a learning model for English subjects based on Barrows & Myers (2002) and the analyze, design, develop, implement, and evaluate (ADDIE) model. As a result of a PBL English class based on the ADDIE model, the learners were able to improve their presentation skills by 86%, their interest in learning by 86%, their understanding of learning by 86%, and cooperation by 100%. As such, studies on designing the learning model should be carried out continuously to achieve the purpose of 21st century English education, which is to improve learners' communication skills and information processing skills.

The elementary school English Education Course consists of four integrated aspects of language (Listen, Speak, Read, Write) used to develop skills for daily communication in English. yet the 6th Grade English Education Curriculum focuses almost exclusively on sentence completion through copying and "fill-in-the-blank" exercises. Further, these activities are insufficient time to develop literacy skills. Additionally, the curriculum's emphasis on memorization within the written component is very time consuming for students, leading many to develop negative opinions of the written aspect of a comprehensive understanding of English. This thesis attempts to address each these problems through development of a web-based Learning Model for Cooperative Writing in English. The study resulted in three observations. First, this model overcame limitations of the current teaching model in schools. Second, students expressed more interest in the experimental model than in the current curriculum and standard pedagogical methods. Finally, the study demonstrated that improvement of English literacy is indeed possible using the model presented here.

This study was focused on finding an effective way for improving English listening ability of students. who are majoring in Office Automation at Dong Seoul College, In order to achieve the best method, the study was to investigate the theories and the teaching techniques of listening comprehension approach. In this regard, Toeic tests were conducted. and the results were analized. This study suggests that various listening experiences should be given to the students to achieve the ultimate goal of listening comprehension for communication.

This experimental study aims at understanding the Korean subjects' phonemic awareness in the English minimal pairs. For the purpose of the experiment, English listening comprehension tests were designed using minimal pairs and conducted among subjects, and the results of the tests were analyzed with the help of spectrogram. From the results of this study, I could find out three important things: First, subjects have difficulty in understanding and distinguishing English vowel minimal pairs. Second, among the English vowel minimal pairs, they had much difficulty in distinguishing between /ə:/ and /ɔ:/. Third, subjects could recognize the semivowel /w/ in words without any difficulty. In addition to this, I tried to analyze the results using the spectrogram, which helps to educate students effectively.

The development of language skills among immigrants is important for their economic adjustment in their host societies since language is an important dimension of the skill levels of immigrants relevant for the labor markets of the host countries. Moreover, language plays a key role in the social adjustment of immigrants and in the social and political cohesion particularly in the society like the US that has diverse racial and ethnic groups. The main purposes of the present study are to analyze the determinants of English abilities of Korean and other Asian immigrants in the US. The present study utilizes the Public Use Microdata Sample (PUMS, S, 5%) in the US. We adopted the ordered probit technique to analyze qualitative differences of English ability. The study found that English fluency increases with a longer duration in the US, the presence of children in the household, living in an area in which a smaller proportion speak ones mother tongue, a younger age at immigration, a higher level of schooling. However, there are marked variations in levels of English proficiency among Asian immigrants.
