  • An approach is described for automatic measuring of GCP's image coordinates from SPOT imagery and focused on the fulfillment an automatic orientation of satellite images. For the orientation of a stereopair of digital images, firstly, GCP(Ground Control Point) should be selected and then the work for measuring of image coordinates correspond to GCPs is required. In this study, we propose the method for extracting the GCP's image coordinates automatically using an image patch for control points and auxiliary points matching. For the evaluation of measurement accuracy, a comparison between points those are extracted manually and automatically by a proposed method have made. Finally, we shows the feasibility of automatic image coordinates measurment by applying in stereo modeling for SPOT images.

  • An algorithm developed for the precision correction of high resolution satellite images is introduced in this paper. In general, the polynomial warping algorithm which derives polynomial equations between GCPs extracted from an image and a base map requires many GCPs well-distributed over the image. The precision correction algorithm described in this paper is based on a sensor-orbit-Earth geometry, and therefore, it is capable of correcting a raw image using only 2-3 GCPs. This algorithm estimates the errors on the orbit determination and the attitude of the satellite by using a Kalman filter. This algorithm was implemented, tested and integrated into the KITSAT-3 image preprocessing software.

  • To increase the utilization of the KOrea Multi-Purpose SATellite(KOMPSAT) series imagery being developed pursuant to the national space development program, high quality images with enhanced locational accuracy should be created through standardized post-processing processes. In the present study, using the Value-Added Processing System(VAPS) constructed for the post-processing of KOMPSAT imagery, location correction experiments were conducted using KOMPSAT-2 and -3 imagery from domestic and overseas regions. First, 50 pieces from each of KOMPSAT-2 imagery were selected from South Korean and North Korean regions, and modeling was conducted using GCP Chips. According to the results, the Root Mean Square Errors(RMSE) for South Korea and North Korea were 1.59 pixels and 2.04 pixels, respectively, and the locational accuracy of ortho mosaic imagery using check points were 1.33m(RMSE) and 1.90m(RMSE), respectively. Meanwhile, in the case of overseas regions for which GCP could not be easily obtained, the improvement of locational accuracy could be identified through image corrections using Open Street Map(OSM). The VAPS and reference materials used in the present study are expected to be very useful in constructing a precise image DB for entire global regions.

  • This paper proposes a method for matching two different images, especially satellite images. In the general image matching fields, when an image is compared to other image, they may have different properties on the size, contents, brightness, etc. If there is no noise in each image, in other words, they have identical pixel level and unchanged edges, the image matching method will be simple comparison between two images with pixel by pixel. However, in many applications, most of images to be matched should have much different properties. This paper proposes an efficient method for matching satellite images. This method is to match a raw satellite image with GCP chips. From this we can make a geometrically corrected image. The proposed method is based on wavelet transformation, not required any pre-processing such as histogram equalization, analysis of raw image like the traditional methods.

  • The necessity of automatic precise georeferencing is increasing with the increase applications of high-resolution satellite imagery. One of the methods for collecting ground control points (GCPs) for precise georeferencing is to use chip images obtained by extracting a subset of an image map such as an ortho-aerial image, and can be automated using an image matching technique. In this case, the importance of the image matching success rate is increased due to the limitation of the number of the chip images for the known reference points such as the unified control point. This study aims to propose a method to improve the success rate of image matching between KOMPSAT-3A images and GCP chip images from aerial ortho-images. We performed the image matching with 7 cases of band pair using KOMPSAT-3A panchromatic (PAN), multispectral (MS), pansharpened (PS) imagery and GCP chip images, then compared matching success rates. As a result, about 10-30% of success rate is increased to about 40-50% when using PS imagery by using PAN and MS imagery. Therefore, using PS imagery for image matching of KOMPSAT-3A images and aerial ortho-images would be helpful to improve the matching success rate.

  • The geo-referencing of satellite imagery is a key task in remote sensing. GCPs are points the position of which is known both in the image and in the supporting maps. Mapping function makes the determination of map coordinates of all image pixels possible. Generally manual operations are done to identify image points corresponding to the points on a digital topographic map. In order to accurately measure ground coordinates of GCPs, differential global positioning system (DGPS) surveying are used. To acquire the sufficient number of well distributed GCPs is one of the most time-consuming and cost-consuming tasks. This paper describes the procedure of automatically extracting GCOs using GCP database. GCP image chips and image matching technique are used for automatic extraction of GCPs. We developed image processing tool for making image chip GCPs and Web Server for management of GCPs.

  • This paper describes an implementation of linear feature extraction algorithms for satellite images and a method of automatic GCP(Ground Control Point) filing using the extracted linear feature. We propose a new linear feature extraction algorithm which uses magnitude and direction information of edges. The result of applying the proposed algorithm to satellite images are presented and compared with those of the other algorithms. By using the proposed algorithm, automatic GCP filing was successfully performed.

  • Mobile Mapping Systems are effective systems to acquire the position and image data using vehicle equipped with the GPS (Global Positioning System), IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit), and CCD camera. They are used in various fields of road facility management, map update, and etc. In the general photogrammetry such as aerial photogrammetry, GCP (Ground Control Point)s are needed to compute the image exterior orientation elements (the position and attitude of camera). These points are measured by field survey at the time of data acquisition. But it costs much time and money. Moreover, it is not possible to make sufficient GCP as much as we want. However Mobile Mapping Systems are more efficient both in time and money because they can obtain the position and attitude of camera at the time of photographing. That is, Image Orientation Technique must use GCP to compute the image exterior orientation elements, but on the other hand Direct Georeferencing can directly compute the image exterior orientation elements by GPS/INS. In this paper, we analyze about the positional accuracy comparison of ground point using the Image Orientation Technique and Direct Georeferencing Technique.
