  • This paper is related to the correction of radiometric distortions induced by topographic relief. RADARSAT SAR image data were obtained over the mountainous area near southern part of Seoul. Initially, the SAR data was geometrically corrected and registered to plane rectangular coordinates so that each pixel of the SAR image has known topographic parameters. The topographic parameters (slope and aspect) at each pixel position were calculated from the digital elevation model (DEM) data having a comparable spatial resolution with the SAR data. Local incidence angle between the incoming microwave and the surface normal to terrain slope was selected as a primary geometric factor to analyze and to correct the radiometric distortions. Using digital maps of forest stands, several fields of rather homogeneous forest stands were delineated over the SAR image. Once the effects of local incidence angle on the radar backscatter were defined, the radiometric correction was performed by an empirical fuction that was derived from the relationship between the geometric parameters and mean radar backscatter. The correction effects were examined by ground truth data.

  • In this paper, we proposed a new wavelet-based image fusion algorithm, which has advantages in both frequency and spatial domains for signal analysis. The developed algorithm compares the ratio of SAR image signal to optical image signal and assigns the SAR image signal to the fused image if the ratio is larger than a predefined threshold value. If the ratio is smaller than the threshold value, the fused image signal is determined by a weighted sum of optical and SAR image signal. The fusion rules consider the ratio of SAR image signal to optical image signal, image gradient and local variance of each image signal. We evaluated the proposed algorithm using Ikonos and TerraSAR-X satellite images. The proposed method showed better performance than the conventional methods which take only relatively strong SAR image signals in the fused image, in terms of entropy, image clarity, spatial frequency and speckle index.

  • This study applied satellite radar imagery to identify flooded areas and examined post-flooding conditions using time-series satellite radar imagery for the development of flood damage mitigation strategies. Using time-series satellite radar images, this study constructed a map delineating areas vulnerable to frequent flood damage. The extracted flooded areas were combined with reference land use maps to examine flood damage by land use type. Major landuse types with severe flood damage were agricultural and forested areas. The analysis of the damage conditions, in terms of land use, served as the basis for developing flood damage mitigation policies, in conjunction with land use planning. The policies for flood damage mitigation can be summarized as land use regulations, land use planning, and flood damage mapping. A preventive measure to minimize flood damage of properties, which regulates developing areas with high flooding potential, is highly recommended. Although this study suggested a number of policies for flood damage mitigation, they represent only a small number of possible policies useful for mitigating flood damage and other environmental problems. Based upon the results of this study, it may be concluded that satellite radar imagery has great potential in providing basic data for large-scale environmental problems such as flooding and oil spills. Nevertheless, further examinations should be conducted and the application of satellite radar imagery should be used to examine other environmental problems.

  • The synthetic aperture rardar (SAR) is an active sensor using microwaves. It transmits a microwave signal, called a chirp pulse, and receives the reflected signal in a moving platform such as satellite and unmanned aerial vehicle. Since this sensor uses microwaves that can penetrate the atmosphere, SAR generates the images regardless of light and weather conditions. However SAR operates on the moving platform, the Doppler shift and the side-looking observation method should be considered. In addtion, a residual image or ghost image can be occurred according to selection of the pulse repetition frequency (PRF). In this paper, a range design of the PRF for the L-band spaceborne SAR system is studied for prevention of SAR image distortion. And the system is studied for prevention of SAR image distortion. And the system parameter and the PRF are calibrated iteratively according to the proposed system design procedure and design constraints. The MATLAB based on SAR system simulator has been developed to verify the validity of calculated PRF. The developed simulator assumes that SAR sensor is operated by the PRF calculated from the design. The results of the simulator show that the targets in image has a valid peak to side-lobe ratio (PSLR) so that the PRF can be used for the spaceborne SAR sensor.

  • There are range and azimuth direction resolution of synthetic aperture radar on the aircraft or satellite. Wide bandwidth chirp pulse generation technology is prerequisite for SAR image with fine resolution. There are two kinds of digital chirp pulse generation technology as arbitrary waveform generator(AWG) and direct digital synthesizer(DDS). In this paper, we design and implement a digital chirp pulse generator to generate 300MHz wide bandwidth linear FM chirp pulse for the fine resolution image with direct digital synthesizer. Implemented chirp pulse generator can be useful for the SAR sensors to make 50cm range resolution image.

  • ARPA(Automatic Radar Plotting Aid) is a device to calculate CPA(closest point of approach)/TCPA(time of CPA), true course and speed of targets by vector operation of relative courses and speeds. The purpose of this study is to develop target acquisition and tracking technology for ARPA Radar implementation. After examining the previous studies, applicable algorithms and technologies were developed to be combined and basic ARPA functions were developed as a result. As for main research contents, the sequential image processing technology such as combination of grayscale conversion, gaussian smoothing, binary image conversion and labeling was deviced to achieve a proper target acquisition, and the NNS(Nearest Neighbor Search) algorithm was appllied to identify which target came from the previous image and finally Kalman Filter was used to calculate true course and speed of targets as an analysis of target behavior. Also all technologies stated above were implemented as a SW program and installed onboard, and verified the basic ARPA functions to be operable in practical use through onboard test.
