  • This study was conducted to establish fundamental of rice cultivation system in the southern warm region of Korea by investigation of variation of yield component factor and yield under the different transplanting dates which was at interval of 15 days, from May 20 to July 5. In the variation of leaf age, the leaf of July 5 transplanting was less 1.1 leaves than that of May 20 transplanting in Seokwang. However in Dongjin, the leaf of May 20 transplanting was more 1.7 leaves than that of July 5. According to transplanting date delay, the shorten ratio of flag leaf was showed an increasing tendency. Period from transplanting to heading under the different transplanting in Seokwang, required about 75 days in May 20 transplanting and 68 days in June 5, 67 days in June 20, but 71 days in July 5, it was a cause of decrease in grain yield, because of increase in the period from transplanting to heading date. The maximum yield under the different transplanting gathered on May 20 transplanting in Seokwang variety, and on June 20 transplanting in Dongjin variety, and then, on the accumulated temperature 1017$\pm$24$^{\circ}C$ in Seokwang, 952$\pm$15$^{\circ}C$ in Dongjin, from 10 days before heading to 30 days after heading, it was appeared the high yield. It was showed linearly negative correlation between the No. of panicles per unit area and transplanting date (Seokwang; r=-0.6768$^{**}$, Dongjin: r=-0.5182$^{**}$). There were more differentiation of spikelets per panicle in the late transplanting in Seokwang, however in Dongjin, it was decreased in differentiation of spikelets per panicle in the early and the late transplanting.ing.

  • Development of soybean cultivars with great nodulation and high nitrogen fixation activity, derived mostly from mutagenesis, may decrease inputs of chemical fertilizer nitrogen into the soil-plant system. Soybean seeds (cv. Jangyupkong, Hwanggeumkong, and Geomjungkong 1) were treated with three different levels of EMS (ethyl methanesulfonate) concentration(30, 50, and 70mM). Increasing the doses of EMS resulted in decreased field emergence rate of seeds, whereas it did not increase M$_2$ mutation frequencies. This indicated that the most efficient concentration of EMS was 30mM for generating mutants. Extensive mutagenesis of Sinpaldalkong 2 with 30mM EMS was undertaken to isolate soybean mutants with greater nodulation. Approximately 8, 200 M$_2$ families were screened for greater nodulation on 5 mM nitrate after inoculation with Bradyrhizobium japonicum strain YCK213-KFCC-10728. Mutant SS-2 nodulated more than the wild type. Comparison of supernodulation between SS-2 and two nts mutants(nts 1007 and nts 1116) revealed that SS-2 showed the supernodulation character at an earlier growth stage than the two nts mutants. Further studies should be needed to characterize the difference in timing of nodulation between SS-2 and nts mutants.

  • Using the milled, blast infected leaves (BIL) as an inoculum source on the screening for the resistance to blast of rice plant was a simple and useful technique. The temperature with high (25^\circ C\sim 35^\circ C) and low (15^\circ C\sim 28^\circ C) and the water stressed or not, was conditioned of to the inoculation with the BIL to the test varieties in seedling stage. In low temperature, most of the varieties were more infected with blast, however the Indica-Japonica hybrids were more infected in high temperature conditions. The water stressed was more infected with blast than the not stressed. The interaction of variety with water stress was not so much as that of variety with temperature. Resistant reaction to blast (BIL) was not affected by the temperature and water stress, but the moderately resistant or susceptible one was much affected by them. Inoculum of BIL was virulent to the newly bred Indica-Japonica hybrid cultivars such as Tongil, Nopung, etc, but not virulent to the Japonica cultivars such as Nongbaek, Jinheung, etc. The discrete, mixed or variable lesions were observed mainly in the moderately resistant or susceptible cultivars such as Kanto 51, Yashiromochi, Ishikari-shiroke, etc.

  • Experiments on the physiological root activity and its related characteristics of rice varieties were carried out in order to obtain some basic informations for the application of the results obtained to a rice breeding program. A significant positive correlation was found not only among the various characteristics related to conducting and ventilating systems which connects top and root of rice plant, but also between these characteristics and root activity. On the other hand, a significant difference in physiological root activity was recognized among different varieties and also between different groups of recognized 7 rice varieties differing in the their origin. It was also found that varieties with higher root activity (root activity indices) after ear formation stage tended to have more number of lower green leaves and consequently resulted in higher grain yield. Therefore, it may be possible to diagnose indirectly the root activity by examining the number of green leaves of the rice plant at later growth stage when breeders make selections of parent material for crossing or of hybrid lines in pedigree nurseries.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the phenomenon of diaschisis in the cerebellum and cerebral cortex in patients with pure basal ganglia hemorrhage using cerebral blood flow SPECT. Materials and Methods: Twelve patients with pure basal ganglia hemorrhage were studied with Tc-99m ECD brain SPECT. Asymmetric index (AI) was calculated in the cerebellum and cerebral cortical regions as |$C_R-C_L$/$(C_R-C_L){\times}200$, where $C_R$and $C_L$ are the mean reconstructed counts for the right and left ROIs, respectively. Hypoperfusion was considered to be present when AI was greater than mean +2 SD of 20 control subjects. Results: Mean AI of the cerebellum and cerebral cortical regions in patients with pure basal ganglia hemorrhage was significantly higher than normal controls (p<0.05): Cerebellum ($18.68{\pm}8.94$ vs $4.35{\pm}0.94$, $mean{\pm}SD$), thalamus ($31.91{\pm}10.61$ vs $2.57{\pm}1.45$), basal ganglia ($35.94{\pm}16.15$ vs $4.34{\pm}2.08$), parietal ($18.94{\pm}10.69$ vs $3.24{\pm}0.87$), frontal ($13.60{\pm}10.5$ vs $4.02{\pm}2.04$) and temporal cortex ($15.92{\pm}11.95$ vs $5.13{\pm}1.69$). Ten of the 12 patients had significant hypoperfusion in the contralateral cerebellum. Hypoperfusion was also shown in the ipsilateral thalamus (n=12), ipsilateral parietal (n=12), frontal (n=6) and temporal cortex (n=10). Conclusion: Crossed cerebellar diaschisis (CCD) and cortical diaschisis may frequently occur in patients with pure basal ganglia hemorrhage, suggesting that CCD can develop without the interruption of corticopontocerebellar pathway.

  • This study was conducted to provide a basic data such as leaf morphological characteristics, total 110 individual trees selected from 11 wild population, for selective breeding. As a result of investigation of the twenty morphological characteristics of the leaf, there were statistically significant differences in all leaf characteristics among the populations. Especially, Mt. Mani population had larger leaf length (LL), width (LW) and area (LAR) than other populations. On the other hand, Mt. Beakwoon and Mt. Duryun had smaller leaf size (LL, LW and LAR) among the populations. Its principal component analysis (PCA) results showed that it represented 72.9% accumulated explanation from three principal component. The characteristics such as leaf area, leaf length and leaf width were highly contributed for classification among populations. According to the cluster analysis, the natural S. alnifolia populations were classified into five groups and Mt. Mani population was different from the other population.

  • Greenhouse and laboratory experiments were conducted to determine the effects of shade treatment and substrate components on plant growth and physiological activity of Taraxacum officinale. Substrates combined with coco peat and perlite (ratio 70 : 30 and 50 : 50, v/v) showed higher growth and yield than their single substrates (p<0.05). Shade treatment also significantly reduced plant height, root length, root diameter, leaf area, chlorophyll content, and fresh weight (p<0.05), compared to no shade. Contents of total phenolics [mg chlorogenic acid equivalents (CAE) $kg^{-1}$ DW] and total flavonoids [mg naringin equivalents $kg^{-1}$ DW] showed higher amounts in shoot parts than root parts of T. officinale, with shade than no shade. The antioxidant potential of the methanol extracts from the plants dose-dependently increased. DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl hydrazyl radical) free radical scavenging activity was higher in leaf parts than in root parts of the plants, and no shade than with shade.

  • A 42-years-old man was referred to our department due to his hemoptysis. Chest CT showed a cavitary lung lesion in the apical segment of the RUL and an anterior mediastinal mass. The patient underwent wedge resection for the cavitary lesion and complete resection for the mediastinal mass. The pathologic finding was Paragonimus Westermani infestation in both the lung and thymus. The abdomen CT taken postoperatively showed an inflammatory mass involving the transverse colon and a small nodular lesion around the descending colon, which strongly suggested paragonimiasis. Postoperatively, the patient took Praziquantel for 2 days and he was discharged without any complications. There was no evidence of recurrence for the last 2 years.

  • Wave energy is dissipated mainly by friction on the seabed until the waves reach the surf zone. Many researchers have investigated the mechanism of wave friction and the bottom shear stress induced by wave motion at a certain point is now well estimated by introducing the wave friction factor related to the near bed velocity given by linear wave theory. The variation of wave energy or wave height over a long distance can be, however, estimated by an iteration process when the propagation of waves is strongly influenced by bed friction. In the present study simple semi-theoretical equation has been developed to compute the variation of wave height for the condition of wave propagation on a constant beach slope. The ratio of wave height is determined by the product of shoalng factor and wave height friction factor (frictional wave energy dissipation factor). The wave height estimated by the new equation is compared with the wave height estimated by the solution of numerical integration for the condition that the waves propagate on a constant slope.
