  • In order to evaluate the durability of reinforced concrete structures under chloride attack from sea water and frost damage, it is important to analyze both the microstructural characteristics of concrete and its diffusion resistance of concrete against chloride ingress. In this study, a relation between micro-pore structures of concrete obtained by the Mercury Intrusion Porosimetry and accelerated chloride diffusivity as well as long term chloride diffusivity were studied for ground granulated blast furnace slag(GGBS) concrete. Different water-cement ratio of 40, 45, 50% and different unit cement concrete of 300, 350, 400 or 450 kg/$m^3$ of the GGBS concrete along with OPC concrete were used and freeze and thawing, and the change in diffusivity and microstructure were observed for both GGBS concrete and damaged GGBS concrete due to rapid freezing and thawing.

  • Among the deteriorating agents, chloride ion is reported to be one of the most harmful ions due to its rapid diffusion and direct effect on steel corrosion. Cold joint which occurs in mass concrete placing is vulnerable to shear resistance and more severe deterioration. The paper presents an quantitative evaluation of chloride diffusion coefficient in OPC(Ordinary Portland Cement) and GGBFS(Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag) concrete containing cold joint. GGBFS concrete shows $6.6{\times}10^{-12}m^2/sec$ which is almost 30% level of OPC concrete results and the trend is repeated in the case of cold joint concrete. Compared with OPC concrete, GGBFS concrete is evaluated to have better resistance to chloride penetration, showing 0.30 times of chloride diffusion coefficient in concrete without cold joint 0.39 times with cold joint, respectively.

  • In this research, the influence of painting materials and applying timing on carbonation and chloride resistances of high volume SCMs concrete was evaluated. As a durability improving method, comparative tests were conducted with painting materials of ERCO (emulsified refined cooking oil), RCO (refined cooking oil), WR (water repellent agent), and ERCO + WR and with painting timings of right after demolding, and 28 days after the wet curing. From the experiment results, in the case of carbonation and chloride resistance, the carbonation depth and chloride penetration depth were decreased when the painting materials were applied in 28 days of wet curing. Additionally, for painting materials, with the order of ERCO, RCO, ERCO+WR, and WR, the carbonation and chloride penentration was delayed. Hence it is considered that ERCO shows the most favorable performance of resistance against carbonation and chloride penetration.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the salt water resistance of concrete depending on various types of cement. In this regard, 5 types of concrete were selected and their strength, void ratio and chloride ion diffusion characteristics were tested, and mutual correlation were analyzed. From the test results, the compressive strength and void ratio of concrete which using Type V cement was as good as Type I cement at long-term ages but the chloride diffusion coefficient of Type V cement was larger than Type I cement. And the concrete replacing some portion of the Type I cement with fly ash was superior in the cases of compressive strength, void ratio and the resistance of chloride ion permeation compared to the Type I cement with the lapse of ages. On the other hand, the compressive strength, the void ratio and the chloride diffusion coefficient of the concrete all indicated high levels of the correlation coefficient and the coefficient of determination regardless of the type of cement.

  • In this study, the diffusion characteristics were evaluated using the concrete mix design of nuclear safety-related structures. Among the concrete structures related to nuclear power safety, we selected the composition of intake and drainage structures that are immersed in seawater or located on the tidal platform and evaluated the chloride ion permeation resistance by compressive strength and electrical conductivity and the diffusion characteristics by immersion in salt water. analyzed. Compressive strength was measured on the 1st, 7th, 14th, 28th, 56th, and 91st days until the 91st day, which is the design standard strength of the nuclear power plant concrete structure, and chloride ion permeation resistance was evaluated on the 28th and 91st. After immersing the 28-day concrete specimens in salt water for 28 days, the diffusion coefficient was derived by collecting samples at different depths and analyzing the amount of chloride. As a result, it was found that after 28 days, the long-term strength enhancement effect of the nuclear power plant concrete mix with 20% fly ash replacement was higher than that of concrete using 100% ordinary Portland cement. It was also found that the nuclear power plant concrete mix has higher chloride ion permeation resistance, lower diffusion coefficient, and higher resistance to salt damage than the concrete mix using 100% ordinary Portland cement.

  • This study investigated the corrosion properties of reinforced concrete with the addition of steel fibers. The transport properties of steel fiber-reinforced concrete such as permeable void, absorption by capillary action, water permeability and chloride diffusion were first measured to evaluate the relationship with the corrosion of steel rebar. Test results showed a slight increase on the compressive strength with the addition of steel fibers as well as considerable improvement of penetration resistance to mass transport of harmful materials into concrete. The addition of steel fibers in reinforced concrete accelerated the initiation of steel corrosion contrary to the expected results based on the measured transport properties. The NaCl ponding surface showed the spalling failure due to the corrosion expansion of steel fibers and the cut-surface around the steel rebar showed the localized steel fiber's corrosion. The wet-dry cycling with high chloride ions as well as high temperature seems to induce the increase of salt crystallization on the pores continually and the increased pressure with the steel fiber's corrosion on the pores caused the spalling failure on the exposed surface. The microcracking on the surface therefore accelerated the movement of water, chloride ions and oxygen into the embedded steel rebar. The mechanism affecting corrosion of embedded steel reinforcement with steel fibers in this study are not yet fully understood and require further study comprising of accurate experimental design to isolate the effect of steel fiber's potential mechanism on the corrosion process.

  • Concrete containing lightly burnt MgO has long term expansibility. It also could compensate for the thermal shrinkage of mass concrete, because the hydration of MgO proceeds at a slow pace to long-term age. Thus, lightly burnt MgO has been applied to the construction of mass concrete such as dams. Recently, the expansion characteristics of MgO concrete with fly ash that could be applied to mass concrete for the reduction of hydration heat have been studied and however, limited studies on its durability. This study investigates the long-term durability characteristics of fly ash concrete with lightly burnt MgO. The durability tests on carbonation, freezing-thawing, diffusion of chloride, and resistance to sulfate attack were carried out for MgO concrete with curing for 360 days in submerged condition with different temperature of 20 and $50^{\circ}C$. The results reveal that MgO concrete shows a greater resistance of carbonation, diffusion of chloride, and resistance to sulfate attack. On the other hand the resistance of freezing-thawing was little influenced by MgO powder.

  • This study uses the recovered water as mixing water and artificial lightweight aggregate pre-wetting water as part of a study to increase the recycling rate and reduce greenhouse gas of the ready-mixed concrete recovered during the concrete transport process, and cement fine powder of blast furnace slag(BFS) and fly ash(FA). The engineering characteristics of the three-component lightweight aggregate mortar used as a substitute were reviewed. For this purpose, the flow, dry unit mass, compressive strength, drying shrinkage, neutralization depth, and chloride ion penetration resistance of the three-component lightweight aggregate mortar were measured. When used together with the formulation, when 15 % of BFS and 5 % of FA were used, it was found to be positive in improving the compressive strength and durability of the mortar.

  • Concrete has a void, which exists as one of defect in concrete. If the porosity of concrete increases, durability of concrete decreases. In this paper, to improve surface void of concrete, surface penetration sealers are applied to specimen. And it were investigated that the resistances of chloride penetration and freezing and thawing for concrete with surface penetration sealer of two types. According to the results, surface penetration sealer has not show a harmful influence on strength and resistance of freezing and thawing. Also, B type surface penetration sealer was more superior in resistance of chloride penetration.

  • In this study, ASTM C 1202 which is most commonly used for evaluating the penetration resistance into the concrete is reviewed. The test results by ASTM C 1202 showed that the passed charge could be underestimated as the $OH^-$ ion concentration in the concrete is lowered when the concrete is mixed with the admixtures. Therefore, the modified method using the distilled water was proposed in the paper. According to the test results, the modified method is not susceptible to $OH^-$ ion and temperature rise. In addition, the long term emersion test for the concrete mixed with the admixtures in the NaCl solution showed that the chloride diffusion coefficient tested by the modified method have higher correlation compared to the conventional ASTM method.
