  • A liquid-liquid solvent extraction process was developed in this study to recover Fe and Ni from heavily concentrated aqueous ferric chloride solution, in an effort to substitute the conventional iron reduction method. Solvent composition and extraction conditions were first developed from the laboratory experiments, and the pilot system was designed and built for commercialization. Stage numbers for extraction and stripping were determined from pilot plant runs, and other operation data were obtained for mass production.

  • An experiment on strawberry (Fragaria Grandflora EHRH) was conducted in order to compare the effect of two compound fertilizers made for this crop, by Kyonggi Chemical Crop. LTD. with that of muriate of potash, sulfate of potash and ammonium nitrate in a farmer's vinylhouse during the winter period of 1984 to 1985. Results obtained are as follows; 1. The effect of compound fertilizers on the growth, number of inflorescences and yield of strawberry showed no significant difference from the effect of muriate of potash, sulfate of potash and ammonium nitrate. But the former increased the content of reduced, and total sugars soluble in diluted acid in the juice of strawberry. 2. As a whole, sulfate of potash increased sugar content in strawberry juice more than muriate of potash, which became the reason to increase the sugar content in the strawberry juice harvested from the compound fertilizer plots.

  • Kinetic studies have been carried out on solvolyses and halide exchanges $(Cl^-,\;Br^-,\;I^-)$ of N,N-dimethyl-, N,N-diethylcarbamoyl chlorides, and solvolyses of N,N-diphenylcarbamoyl chloride. Kinetic results together with simple MO analysis indicated that: (a) N,N-dialkylcarbamoyl chlorides reacted via the $S_N2$ mechanism, while N,N-diphenylcarbamoylchloride reacted via the $S_N1$ mechanism; (b) in chloride exchanges, the bond-breaking appeared to be important, whereas in bromide and iodide exchanges, the bond-formation was shown to be important.

  • A comnprehensive process which combines chemical with thermal treatment by controlled counterflow oxidation has been developed for disposal of PCBs in transformer oil. PCBs which not completely removed by chemical treatment, after being filtered with appropriate adsorbent during the oil circulations, was thermally treated. Destruction efficiencies of better than 99.99% was obtained, with no measurable formation of PCDDs (polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins) or PCDFs (polychlorinated dibenzofurans). The combination also permits high recovery of oil and inorganic supports from scrap power transformers. The process is environmentally benign, easy to use and less capital intensive than other available technologies.

  • Kinetic studies on solvolytic reactions of 1-and 2-naphthalene sulfonyl chlorides in ethanol-water mixtures have been carried out by means of conductometry at several temperatures. The rate constant for 2-naphthyl compound was larger than that for 1-naphthyl compound. This was contrary to the prediction of MO theory and could be rationalized as due to the peri-hydrogen effect in the transition state for 1-naphthyl compound. Based on m values of Winstein plots and n values of Kivinen pacolots it was concluded that the solvolytic displacement of the two naphthalene sulfonyl chlorides in ethanol-water mixtures proceed via $S_N2$ process.

  • This study was carried out to find the existing forms of chlorlnc in EM dust and to understand the valaliliratian behavior and the removal of chlorine from EAF dust with lemperalure and heating almosphere The chemical compositions of dust A are 27.3%Fe. 21.8%3Zn, 3 15%Pb, 3 51%C1 and that of dust B BE 33.92%Fe, 15.94%Zn, 2.73% Pb, 3.98%Cl. The XRD analysis and water leaching test shows that chlorlne in EM dust exist mainly as NaCI, KCI, Pb (0H)Cl. Above 99% of chlorine was volatilized when dust was hentcd in alr atmosphere at 1100$^{\circ}$C h r 1 hour and that was 96% when heated in reduction atmosnherc at 1100$^{\circ}$C for 1 hour.

  • Batch ion exchange experiments of Au(III) were performed from ammonium chloride solution by employing strong anionic exchange resins (Amberlite IRA 402 and AG 1-X8). Au(III) was well loaded into the two resins and the loading behavior of Au(III) into AG 1-X8 was superior to that into Amberlite IRA 402. The loading of Au(III) into AG 1-X8 followed Langmuir adsorption isotherm and the experimentally determined loading capacity was 355 mg/g. Au(III) was successfully eluted by $HClO_4$ from the loaded AG 1-X8 and the elution percentage of Au(III) increased with the concentration of $HClO_4$.

  • Dissolution of Antheraea pernyi silk fiber was carried out in a zinc chloride solution with various dissolving conditions. The solubility was significantly dependent on the concentration of zinc chloride, dissolving temperature and time. The proper conditions of dissolution were found as 8 M zinc chloride, 70$^{\circ}C$ temperature and 30 min dissolving time. Regenerated A. pernyi silk fibroin powder was obtained through dialysis. FTIR and XRD showed that regenerated A. pernyi silk powder was composed of a ${\beta}$-sheet as well as an ${\alpha}$-helix conformation.

Making Process for Magnetite Powder (Magnetite 분말의 제조)

  • In this study, the new processing method to produce magnetite for mono-component black toner was studied using spray roaster. The produced magnetite is compared with TMB 125 made by Magnox, USA. When the weight ratio of the ferrous chloride and the ferric chloride is varied from 3:7~7:3 under $N_2$ atmosphere, the 100% major phase of magnetite is obtained. However, when the content of he ferrous chloride is higher than 70wt%, the content of FeO is increased. The phase of $\Gamma-Fe_2O_3$ is shown in th range of over 70wt% of the ferric chloride. The magnetite produced by spray roasting has a saturation magnetization of 80~85 emu/g and a coercivity of 110~130 Oe. The shape of the particle is irregular sphere and hte size of the magnetite is the range of $0.3~0.5\mu\textrm{m}$. It is shown that the magnetite made by spary roasting is enough to apply to the magnetic material of toner.

  • This study was conducted to find out concentration of trace metal, survival rate, falling rate and structural changes of the abalone Haliotis discus hannai exposed to nickel chloride. Experimental groups were composed of one control condition and four nickel chloride exposure conditions (7.0, 12.0, 17.0 and $22.0\;NiCl_2\;mg/L$). The concentration of nickel in abalone was significantly increased all exposure groups. Though the exposure groups had lower survival rate than the control group, falling rate higher than the control group. Histopathological changes in the foot, gill and hepatopancreas of abalone was revealed prominently with exposure group than control group.
