  • As the corrosion of reinforcing bar in concrete structures exposed to chloride attack is one of main factors to determine the remaining service life, marine concrete structures have to be designed to protect the chloride penetration. Among the durability design methods such as deterministic method and probabilistic method, design method based on the probabilistic theory has been widely studied. However, the most essential material, data of the material properties related to chloride diffusion, are still insufficient. In this paper, the probabilistic distribution of chloride diffusion coefficients and aging coefficients are derived by the experiment and analysis for the chloride coefficients of concrete containing pozzolans, which are generally used in marine structures.

  • Recently, studies on alkali activated slag(AAS) binders that do not use cement have been actively conducted. It is known that AAS concrete is highly resistant to chloride damage based on the test method used for ordinary concrete. However, it is fully not understood whether the test method used for concrete can be applied to AAS mixtures. Therefore, in this study, we verified the consistency of NT Build 492 and ASTM C 1202 test methods by applying various experimental variables. According to the experimental results, the two tests yielded opposite results. Therefore, the chloride durability of AAS mortar can be different depending on the evaluation method.

  • In order to prevent deterioration of reinforced concrete structures exposed to marine environment, performance based durability design than the design by conventional deemed-to-satisfy rule should be concerned. For example, even though chloride threshold level, which is a major parameter for durability design, is defined as a 1.2 $kg/m^3$ in the Korean concrete specification, it shows that the chloride threshold level leads to over design in its real application so that realistic value should be determined for the performance design. In this paper, not only the probabilistic properties of chloride threshold level obtained from published data are taken into account, but also the experimental results of the probabilistic properties using surface chloride content, diffusion coefficient, cover depth are considered in the assessment utilizing the concept of performance based durability design. In computation, the Monte Carlo Simulation (MCS) is used to perform an assessment due to chloride attack for a target submerged tunnel box. This study found that the specification on current chloride threshold level should be modified for more rational and accurate assessment and design.

  • The RC buildings which are constructed on the seaside are followed by KBC(2016) to achieve the minimization of durability damage. To control the corrosion of the reinforcing steel bar by salt attack, W/C should be under 0.4 and specified concrete strength is higher than 35MPa in the concrete/building construction standard specification. Even though it has been proved that the concrete mixed with mineral admixture such as blast furnace slag and fly ash etc. have high strength and durability in previous researches, the beneficial informations are not applied to the codes. Ready-mixed concretes which usually include the admixtures in Busan were tested to certify the salt attack durability. In the same specified concrete strength, remarkable salt attack durability was evaluated in comparison to OPC. For economical and reliable durability design, chloride ion diffusivity should be measured before applying to new building construction.

  • This paper provides a new approach for predicting the corrosion resistivity of reinforced concrete structures exposed to chloride attack. In this method, the prediction can be updated successively by a Bayesian theory when additional data are available. The stochastic properties of model parameters are explicitly taken into account into the model. To simplify the procedure of the model, the probability of the durability limit is determined from the samples obtained from the Latin hypercube sampling technique. The new method may be very useful in designing important concrete structures and help to predict the remaining service life of existing concrete structures which have been monitored.

  • The service life in RC (Reinforced Concrete) is very important and it is usually obtained through deterministic method based on Fick's 2nd law and probabilistic method. This paper presents an evaluation of $P_{df}$(durability failure probability) and the related service life considering time-dependent behaviors in chloride diffusion and surface chloride content. For the work, field investigation is performed for RC structures exposed to chloride attack for 3.5~4.5years, focusing tidal zone (6.0 m) and sea shore (9.0 m), respectively. Random variables like cover depth, chloride diffusion coefficient, and surface chloride content are obtained, and $P_{df}$ and the service life are evaluated. Unlike the results from deterministic method using LIFE 365, probabilistic method with time effects on diffusion and surface chloride shows a relatively rapid change in the result, which is a significant reductions of service life in the case with low surface chloride content. For probabilistic evaluation of durability, high surface chloride content over $10.0kg/m^3$ is required and reasonable service life can be derived with consideration of time-dependent diffusion coefficient.

  • Recently, a variety of researches has been carried out to obtain a more controlled durability and long-term performance of concrete structures under chloride attack environments. In particular, new procedures for probability-based durability analysis/design have been noticed to be very valuable for the enhancement of service life of concrete structures. Although there is still a lack of relevant data, this approach has been successfully applied to some new concrete structures. In this paper, the diffusion equation based on Fick's second law has been solved with a time dependent diffusion coefficient and the probabilistic analysis of the durability performance has been carried out by using a Monte Carlo Simulation. From the results, the influence of each parameter on the durability of concrete structures was investigated and the new procedure for durability analysis was demonstrated in terms of chloride penetration data from various concrete structures. The new procedure might be very useful in designing important concrete structures and help to predict the remaining service life of existing concrete structures under chloride attack environments.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the service life of reinforced concrete structures for durability design. The service life has three aspects physical service life, functional service life, and social service life, and that a structures are normally demolished to end its service life when either the functional or social service life is over before the physical service life comes to end an end. In the future, it is very important that durability design shall be performed establishing design service life and the unallowable state of deterioration in the course of design service life.
