  • This study predicted the probability of corrosion initiation of reinforced concrete tunnel boxes structures using the Monte Carlo Simulation. For the inner wall and outer wall in the tunnel boxes, exposed to airborne chloride ion and seawater directly respectively, statistical values of parameters like diffusion coefficient D, surface chloride content $C_s$, cover depth c, and the chloride threshold level $C_{lim}$ were examined from experiment or literature review. Their average values accounted for $3.77{\times}10^{-12}m^2/s$, 3.0% by weight of cement, 94.7mm and 45.5mm for outer wall and inner wall, respectively, and 0.69% by weight of cement for D, $C_s$, c, and $C_{lim}$, respectively. With these parametric values, the distribution of chloride contents at rebar with time and the probability of corrosion initiation of the tunnel boxes, inner wall and outer wall, was examined by considering time dependency of chloride transport. From the examination, the histogram of chloride contents at rebar is closer to a gamma distribution, and the mean value increases with time, while the coefficient of variance decreases with time. It was found that the probability of corrosion initiation and the time to corrosion were dependent on the time dependency of chloride transport. Time independent model predicted time to corrosion initiation of inner wall and outer wall as 8 and 12 years, respectively, while 178 and 283 years of time to corrosion was calculated by time dependent model for inner wall and outer wall, respectively. For time independent model, the probability of corrosion at 100 years of exposure for inner wall and outer wall was ranged 59.5 and 95.5%, respectively, while time dependent model indicated 2.9 and 0.2% of the probability corrosion, respectively. Finally, impact of $C_{lim}$, including values specified in current codes, on the probability of corrosion initiation and corrosion free life is discussed.

  • Over the past few decades, considerable numbers of studies on the durability of concrete have been carried out extensively. The majority of these researches have been performed on sound uncracked concrete, although most of in-situ concrete structures have more or less micro-cracks. It is only recent approach that the attention has shifted towards the influence of cracks and crack width on the penetration of chloride into concrete. The penetration of chlorides into concrete through the cracks can make a significant harmful effect on reinforcement corrosion. Author of this study examined the effect of cracks on chloride penetration by short term experiment. However, it is necessary to accomplish the effect by long term experiment to get reliable goal. In this study, the long term and short term experiments were carried out. This can be useful for establishing new species model of chloride penetration through cracks in concrete.

  • Chloride ion, which penetrates into the cement composites from the outside, generally diffuses by the concentration gradient. Chloride ions are adsorbed by the chemical reaction with cement hydrates. Recent studies have shown that anion exchange resin (AER) powder can effectively adsorb the chloride ion in the cement composites, and thus, the cement composites containing AER have a high chloride adsorption capacity and a good resistance for chloride penetration. In this study, the chloride adsorption ability of the AER powder was investigated under the conditions of distilled water and calcium hydroxide saturated solution to determine if the AER powder is less effective to increase the chloride adsorption ability after grinding process. The chloride adsorption ability of AER powder was compared with the previous research about the chloride adsorption of AER bead. In addition, the compressive strength, chloride diffusion coefficient (using NT Build 492 method), and the chloride profile of cement mortar substituted with AER powder were investigated. There was no decrease in the chloride adsorption capacity of AER powder but increase in the kinetic property for chloride adsorption after the grinding process. The AER powder could absorb the chloride ion in the mortar quickly, and showed better chloride ion adsorption ability than the cement hydrates.

  • The vulnerability of concrete to its environment is significantly dependent on the fact that concrete is a porous material. For well-consolidated and well-cured concrete, its service life is a very long and an entrance of aggressive substance might be only pores. However, for cracked concrete, cracks should be preferential channel for the penetration of aggressive substance such as chloride ions. The effect of crack on chloride penetration depends on its size for example, crack width and crack depth. The purpose of this study is examining the effect of crack width and crack depth on chloride penetration. In order to visualize chloride penetration via cracks, RCM (rapid chloride migration) testing is accomplished. Crack width is examined using an optical microscope and CMOD value is used to estimate average crack width. From the examination on the trend of chloride diffusion coefficients of concrete specimens with various crack widths, a critical crack width and a critical crack depth are found out.

  • The most common deteriorating processes of concrete structures are carbonation and chloride ion ingress. Many concrete structures have been suffered from chloride ions diffusion or carbonation induced reinforcement corrosion damage and many studies have been done on it. However, those studies were confined mostly to the single deterioration of carbonation or chloride attack only, although actual environment is rather of combined conditions. In case of many in-situ concrete structures, deterioration happened more for the case of combined attack than the single case of carbonation or chloride attack. In this paper, chloride profiles of carbonated concrete is predicted by considering two layer composite model, which is based on Fick's 2nd law. From the experimental result on combined deterioration of chloride and carbonation, it was examined that high chloride concentration was built up to 3∼5 mm over depth from carbonation depth. The analytical modeling of chloride diffusion was suggested to depict the relative influence of the carbonation depth. The diffusion coefficients of carbonation concrete and uncarbonated concrete with elapsed time were considered in this modeling.

  • Over the past few decades, considerable numbers of studies on the durability of concrete have been carried out extensively. A lot of improvements have been achieved especially in both measuring techniques as well as modeling of ionic flows. However, the majority of these researches have been performed on sound uncracked concrete, although most of in-situ concrete structures have more or less micro-cracks. It is only recent approach that the attention has shifted towards the influence of cracks and crack width on the penetration of chloride into concrete. The penetration of chlorides into concrete through the cracks can make a significant harmful effect on reinforcement corrosion. On the other hand, a general acceptable crack width of 0.3 mm has been recognized for keeping the serviceability of concrete structures in accordance with a lot of codes. However, there seems to be rare established description to explain the critical crack width in terms of the durability of concrete. To make a bad situation worse, there is little agreement on critical crack width among a few of literatures for this issue. Critical crack width is still controversial problem. Nevertheless, since the critical crack width is important key for healthy assessment of concrete structures exposed to marine environment, it should be established. The objective of this study is to define a critical crack width. The critical crack width in this study is designed for a threshold crack width, which contributes to the first variation of chloride diffusion coefficient in responsive to the existence of cracks. A simple solution is formulated to realize the quantifiable parameter, chloride diffusion coefficient for only cracked zone excluding sound concrete. From the examination on the trend of chloride diffusion coefficient of only cracked zone for various crack widths, a critical crack width is founded out.

  • The degradation of reinforced concrete (RC) structures due to physical and chemical attacks has been a major issue in construction engineering. Deterioration of RC structures by chloride attack followed by reinforcement corrosion is one of the serious problems. An objective of this study is to develop a form of mathematical model of chloride ingress into concrete. In order to overcome some limits of the previous approaches, a chloride ingress model, consisting of chloride solution intrusion through the capillary pore and chloride ion diffusion through the pore water, was proposed. Moreover, the variability of chloride ion diffusivity due to the degree of hydration of cement, relative humidity in pore, exposure condition, and variation of chloride binding, was considered in the model. In order to verify the proposed model, the results predicted by the proposed model were compared with analysis results of Life-365, a computer program for predicting the service life of reinforced concrete structures exposed to chlorides. In conclusion, the proposed model would be promising to predict the chloride ion profile and to estimate the service life of RC structures.

  • A reference diffusion coefficient model from ACI life-365 is drawn from test results by NT build 443. This test method gives a time-averaged diffusion coefficient during immersion period, thus the ACI model uses the time-averaged diffusion coefficient as a reference value. ACI model needs to be revised, considering the difference between the time-average value and reference value at specified time. In this study, firstly the analytic solutions of diffusion equation are derived considering the initiation time and period of exposure to chloride, and secondly the time-averaged diffusion coefficient from NT build 443 is converted into the diffusion coefficient at reference time. From this study, the reference diffusion coefficient of ACI model should be modified to be about 10% larger values than those of present ACI model. For convenient design of service life, previous relationship between the chloride diffusion coefficient from NT build 443 and that from NT build 492 is also modified. To compare the chloride diffusion coefficients of ACI and JCI models, the reference chloride diffusion coefficient with respect to the JCI model is drawn in the similar form of ACI model's, and service life prediction by ACI life-365 method is confirmed to give a conservative result.

  • In marine environment, the durability of concrete and reinforcing steel is known to be deteriorate by the permeation of chloride ion into concrete. In this study the conductive photocatalyst was used to improve the seawater corrosion resistance of the concrete and steel. Mortar and concrete samples were prepared by mixing with various amounts of conductive active carbon and photocatalytic powder($TiO_2$). The compressive strength of concrete was decreased with the increase of the amount of conductive carbon powders. The samples containing conductive carbon and photocatalytic powders showed the superior seawater corrosion resistance compared with the ordinary sample, which was verified by XRF analysis showing the concentration of chloride ion($Cl^-$) of mortars and concretes. The inhibitive effect of photocatalyst against chloride attack was discussed with the diffusion coefficient of chloride ion into mortar and concrete.
