Pilot Study on the Advanced Treatment of Combined Wastewater with Sewage as a Cosubstrate (가정하수를 cosubstrate로서 사용한 하수-염색폐수-공장폐수의 합병 고도처리 pilot plant 연구)

  • In this research, a retrofitting process, which consists of a pretreatment system (coagulation) for dye wastewater combined with a biological nutrient system (MLE process using media), for a sewage treatment plant that has to treat dye wastewater efficiently with domestic wastewater were developed and a pilot plant was operated for verifying adoptability and performance of the developed advanced process for dye wastewater. From the results of the pilot plant operation, BOD 52.9%, $COD_{Cr}$ 55.9%, and color 71.3% were removed in pretreatment of coagulation process and the biodegradability of dye wastewater was improved to $0.32{\sim}0.59BOD/COD_{Cr}$ of the coagulated wastewater from $0.29{\sim}0.43BOD/COD_{Cr}$ of the raw dye wastewater. The final effluent concentrations were BOD of 8 mg/L, $COD_{Cr}$ of 43 mg/L, $COD_{Mn}$ of 18 mg/L, T-N of 8 mg/L, and T-P of 1.3 mg/L, respectively. Color was removed from 1655 to 468 unit by coagulation and then to 123 unit by MLE process. The HPLC analysis of aromatic amines in wastewater showed that decolorization was achieved by cometabolism while aromatic amines were produced by cleavage of azo bonds under anaerobic conditions and these products were removed in an aerobic tank subsequently. Nitrification rates of attached and suspended microorganisms were evaluated comparatively and the acclimating conditions of bacteria on media were validated by the scanning electron microscope.

  • For the effective treatment of dye-processing wastewater, JLR(Jet-Loop Reactor) with active carbon supports were investigated. BOD removal efficiency was found as 99% when influent BOD concentration of dye-processing wastewater was 400 mg/L. $COD_{Mn}$ of effluent removal efficiencies were found as 86${\sim}$ 89% when these of activated sludge reactor were 62${\sim}$72%. Also, color removal efficiencies were found as 84${\sim}$87% when these of activated sludge reactor were 72%${\sim}$77%. After JLR with active carbon supports had been used, all of the $COD_{Mn}$, $COD_{Cr}$ and color removal efficiencies Increased when chemical precipitation was done. Consequently, JLR with active carbon supports was proved to be more excellent than the activated sludge reactor.

  • Chlorinated phenols are widely used by the chemical industry as intermediate products in synthesis and previously were frequently applied to various industry fields. Peroxidases catalyze the peroxide-dependent oxidation of a range of inorganic and organic compounds. Peroxidase was shown to mineralize a variety of recalcitrant aromatic compounds and to oxidize a number of polycyclic aromatic and phenolic compounds. Among monomeric phenolic and nonphenolic compounds, peroxidase is known to oxidize its compounds. In this study, a colorimetric assay was developed to quantitatively evaluate the peroxidase activity for rapid screening. Color products of different intensity were developed proportionally to the peroxidase activity on agar plate and 96-well plate. This method correlates well with the RP-HPLC result. Using this screening method, 12 colonies of strain was screened which survived at high concentration of 2,4-DCP (1000 ppm) and with peroxidase activity for the $7^{th}$ round screening step on agar plate. These strains were utilized 2,4-DCP as a sole carbon source and produced peroxidase. After the screening test, four of the bacteria have significant better effect of COD removal on dye waste-water. COD removal of these was from 44% to 61%, respectively.

  • In the mixed system of supercritical carbon dioxide/organic solvents, poly(vinyl alcohol)(PVA) film of high degree of hydrolysis could be dyed with a dichroic dye of C. I. direct black 22(DB22) and as a result, high durability was obtained. Especially, as a dye dispersant in a supercritical fluid phase, a mixed solvent system of ethylene glycol: dimethyl sulfoxide=4 : 6 weight ratio was investigated. Then the optimum pressure for dyeing could be reduced down to 200 bar. Using this supercritical fluid system, the maximum dyeing appeared as the transmittance of less than 1% and the waste amount was reduced to the level of 1/10. After 500% drawing of this PVA film, both the polarizing efficiency of 94% and the single piece transmittance of 30% were obtained. The limitation of DB22 and further improvements were also discussed.

  • Comamonas sp. AEBL-85 was isolated from microbial granules in an activated sludge process of long-term operated for the treatment of reactive azo dye, and characterized its capability to decolorize Reactive Black 5. The effects of adding carbon source and nitrogen source on the extent of decol-orization were analyzed to develop an optimal medium. The optimum initial pH and temperature wire 6.0 and 35$^{\circ}C$, respectively. Reactive Black 5 of 50 mg/l was readily decolorized up to 95% within 40 hr by Comamonas sp. AEBL-85.

  • 시화호 개발 시점은 1975년 농업진흥공사가 시화호 유역을 간척농지로 개발한다는 계획을 수립한 시점부터 잡을 수 있으나 건설교통부가 이 지역을 반월특수지역 개발구역으로 지정한 1986년 9월 27일로 보는 것이 타당할 것으로 본다. 1986년에 정부가 그렇게 지정한 목적은 이 지역을 방조제로 막아서 담수호를 만들어 농업용수를 공급하고 농지 조성과 수자원 확보를 기한다는 목적 및 그에 따른 수도권 인구 분산 및 도서 지역 균형 개발을 이루겠다는 것이었다. 그러나 1995년 4월 2억4천백85만 톤의 썩은 시화호 물을 서해로 당류하고 바닷물을 유입한 이래 2001년 2월 정부가 다시 해수호로 인정하기까지 이 호수는 숟한 우여 곡절과 정부의 잦은 정책 변경으로 자연 환경이 파괴되었으며 생태계 변화에 따른 인근 지역과 농작물에 많은 피해를 보았고 염색 공단에서 흘러나온 폐수로 인해 악취를 풍기는 등 오염이 심각해 완전히 실패로 돌아간 '환경실패대작'이라고 할 수 있다. 이렇게 된 데는 정책 집행 과정에서 환경오염 저해 요인에 대한 무사 안일한 대처, 비밀주의, 철저하지 못한 오폐수의 단속 등 정부 폭의 실책을 우선해서 말할 수 있다. 본 논문에서는 이런 것을 포함해서 시화호가 실패하게 된 여타 중요 요인에 대해서 알아보고 또 지속 가능한 활용방안 및 대책에 대해서 간략히 알아보고자 한다.

Reuse Technology Development and Economic Evaluation of Dyeing Wastewater Treatment Sludge (폐수처리슬러지의 재활용기술개발 및 경제성 평가 -B염색조합을 중심으로-)

  • This study was carried out for treatment and reuse of inorganic sludge from Fenton process at B dyeing wastewater treatment plant. The parameters for pilot-scale treatment system were derived from the results of this study. It was found that $COD_{cl}$ of the treated effluent became lower than 100 mg/l approximately on the optimal reaction condition. 2nd sludge which was generated after redissolving sludge was analyzed, and it showed that reduction ratio of ash in 2nd sludge and total dry sludge weight in comparison with current sludge were 85% and 65%. Also Fe salt in sludge was redissolved about 90~95% of initial Fe by weight. It was estimated almost ₩350,000,000 for sludge reuse process. It was estimated saving of about ₩1,300,000 per day (₩420,000,000 per year) in operating cost based on 30,000 $m^3$/d treatment, which these were about ₩430,000 per day in chemical, ₩1,100,000 per day in sludge transportation and ₩200,000 per day in equipment maintenance. Payback period with interest charge for investment cost was estimated about 10.5 months. Also, net present value (NPV) was ₩792,000,000 and internal rat of return (IRR) was about 110%.

Treatment of an Authentic Textile-dyeing Wastewater Utilizing a Fluidized Biofilter and Hybrid Recirculating System Composed of the Fluidized Biofilter and a UV/photocatalytic Reactor (실제 혼합염색폐수의 유동상 시스템을 활용한 미생물처리와 하이브리드 재순환시스템처리)

  • A fluidized biofilter was filled with Pseudomonas sp. and Bacillus cereus/thuringiensis-fixed waste-tire crumb media and was run to treat authentic textile-dyeing wastewater mixed with alkaline polyester-weight-reducing wastewater. As a result, its removal efficiency of $COD_{Cr}$ and color were 75~80% and 67%, respectively. In addition, upon constructing hybrid-recirculating system composed of the fluidized biofilter and a 450 W-UV/photocatalytic reactor, only fluidized biofilter was run bypassing UV/photocatalytic reactor at stage I. Subsequently, the hybrid system was continuously run at stage II-i, ii and iii. At stage II-i, the total removal efficiency of $COD_{Cr}$ was enhanced to be 80~85%, compared to 75% at stage I, owing to 20~30% removal efficiency of the UV/photocatalytic reactor. However, at stage II-i, the total removal efficiency of color was enhanced to be 65~70%, compared to 45~65% at stage I, even though the removal efficiency of the UV/photocatalytic reactor was tantamount to merely 0~5%. As far as the removal efficiency of fluidized biofilter of the hybrid-recirculating system is concerned, its removal efficiency of color was enhanced by the synergy effect of the hybrid-recirculating system unlike $COD_{Cr}$. Besides, despite of the increase of hybrid-recirculating system-recycle ratio, the deactivation of photo-catalytic activity was scarcely observed to eliminate the color while its irreversible deactivation was observed to eliminate $COD_{Cr}$.

A study on the dye wastewater treatment by Fenton oxidation process (Fenton 산화공법을 적용한 염색폐수처리 연구)

  • In this study, Fenton reaction was studied for the possibility of applying as advanced treatment and its optimal condition for the removal of refractory organics from the dye wastewater. Fenton reaction was applied to remove refractory organics after the bio-treatment (secondary treatment) inside test laboratory and on-site pilot plant. Wastewater from the secondary treatment was used and its $COD_{Mn}$ was measured as 30~50mg/L. After the Fenton reaction, the optimal condition was found as pH 3~3.5, reaction time 2~2.5hr, chemical input ratio of ($FeCl_2$(33%)/$H_2O_2$(35%)) was 3 : 1. When chemical input ratio of ($FeCl_2$(33%)/$H_2O_2$(35%)) was at its optimal, amount of sludge volume ($SV_{2hr}$) was 21~28%. With pilot plant test, removal rate was heavily influenced by the hydraulic retention time(HRT), and optimum value of HRT was 2.0 hr. When pilot plant($2m^3/d$) was placed on-site and operated continuously, it showed steady and fairly good treatment of COD where COD removal rate was 60~70%, treated water showed below 20mg/L.

Estimation of Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Environmental Assessment of Dye Wastewater Treatment Process (염색폐수 처리공정의 온실가스 배출량 산정 및 환경성 평가)

  • Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from dye wastewater treatment processes were estimated by analysing their mass and energy balances, which were then used as baseline information for environmental assessment. The total GHG emissions from dye wastewater treatment plants were divided into direct emissions from the treatment processes and indirect ones from electricity usage. The amounts of $CO_2$, $CH_4$ and $N_2O$ emissions were calculated according to the Intergovernmental Panel on Clime Change (IPCC) guideline for the GHG target management system. For 3 years between 2011 and 2013, direct and indirect emissions were on average 8,742.7 and 7,892.0 Ton.$CO_2eq/year$, respectively, with the former exhibiting 52.6 %. Also, compared to 2012, in 2013, the eco-efficiency indicator by the GHG emissions was found to be more than 1, suggesting that environmental quality was effectively improved.
