  • The thermal elasto-plastic analysis for the prediction of welding distortion of a 3 dimensional large-scaled ship structure is a very time-consuming work since the analysis is a nonlinear problem, and a lot of finite elements are needed to simulate the large ship hull block. Generally, 3-D finite elements have been used in the 3-D welding distortion problem to assess precisely the temperature gradient through the thickness direction of the welding plate. As a result of the adoption of 3-D element, degrees of freedom are rapidly increased in the problem to be solved. In this study, to improve the time efficiency of welding thermal elasto-plastic analysis, a layered shell element was proposed to simulate 3-D temperature gradient, and the results were compared with the experiment. The experiments were carried out for the type of bead-on-plate welding, and we found the measured data have a good agreement with the FEA results.

  • In the manufacturing process of thermosetting carbon fiber composite materials using an autoclave, the internal temperature changes according to the set temperature cycle. This temperature change causes the resin in the composite material to cure. Heat is generated through the chemical reaction of the resin, which can result in a difference between the temperature inside the autoclave and the temperature of the composite material. Previous research assumed that the temperatures of the composite material and the autoclave were the same and analyzed to predict the residual stress and thermal deformation after manufacturing. However, these stresses and deformations depend on the temperature and degree of cure of the composite material. Therefore, this study verifies a thermal-chemical model analysis technique that takes into account the heat generated by the chemical reaction of the resin to accurately calculate the temperature and degree of cure. Additionally, case studies were conducted for different thicknesses to investigate whether this model exhibits similar trends across varying thicknesses.

  • In a nuclear power plant, the fuel assembly, which is composed of fuel rods, burns, and the high temperature can generate power. The fuel rod consists of pellets and a cladding that covers the pellets. It is important to understand the pellet-cladding mechanical interaction with regard to nuclear safety. This paper proposes simulation of the PCMI. The gap between the pellets and the cladding, and the contact pressure are very important for conducting thermal analysis. Since the gap conductance is not known, it has to be determined by a suitable method. This paper suggests a solution. In this study, finite element (FE) contact analysis is conducted considering thermal expansion of the pellets. As the contact causes plastic deformation, this aspect is considered in the analysis. A 3D FE module is developed to analyze the PCMI using FORTRAN 90. The plastic deformation due to the contact between the pellets and the cladding is the major physical phenomenon. The simple analytical solution of a cylinder is proposed and compared with the fuel rod performance code results.

  • This article aims to analytically research for influence of residual stresses on bending moment responses against welded steel pipes subjected to quasi -static or dynamic loadings. The residual stresses of the welded steel pipe are computed by three-dimensional welding simulation. The bending moment responses of the welded and seamless steel pipes are determined by using three-dimensional dynamic elastoplastic FE analysis as a function of loading rate. It is seen from analytical results that the welded steel pipe shows lower moment response comparing to the seamless steel pipe, and moment difference between seamless and welded steel pipes tends to decrease as loading rate increases.

  • The block assembly of ship consists of a series of heat processes such as cutting, bending, welding residual stress relaxation and fairing With the fast development of computers, the thermal elasto-plastic analysis method has become a versatile tool for practical applications in the ship production. If numerical analysis is proved to be an advantageous tool to predict the residual deformation due to various heat processes, the optimum methods which can remove the welding distortion can be presented at each assembly stage, which will result in great progress in improving the accuracy of block assembly. In order to minimize the weld-induced angular distortion in thick weldments, this paper proposes the optimum groove design for various plate thickness as the distortion control method. The validity of this method has been substantiated by a number of numerical simulations and experiments.

  • Performed here is an assessment study for deterministic fracture mechanics analysis of a pressurized thermal shock(PTS). The PTS event means an event or transient in pressurized water reactors(PWRs) causing severe overcooling(thermal shock) concurrent with or followed by significant pressure in the reactor vessel. The problems consisting of two transients and 10 cracks are solved and maximum stress intensity factors and maximum allowable nil-ductility reference temperatures are calculated. Their results are compared each other to address the general characteristics between transients, crack types and analysis methods. The effects of elastic-plastic material behavior and clad coating on the inner surface are explored.

  • For the precise assessment of the effect of welding residual stresses on structural strength and fatigue crack growth behavior, new FE analysis algorithms for the estimation of residual stress relaxation due to external load and redistribution due to fatigue crack propagation were proposed in this paper. Initial welding residual stress field was obtained by thermal elasto-plastic analysis considering temperature dependent material properties, and the amount of residual stress relaxation and redistribution were assessed by subsequent elasto-plastic analysis In the analysis of fatigue crack propagation, the applied SIF(Stress Intensity Factor) range was evaluated by $\frac{1}{4}$-point displacement extrapolation method, and the effect of welding residual stresses on crack propagation was considered by introducing the effective SIF concept. The test results of crack propagations were compared with the predicted data obtained by the analysis.

  • DMWs are common feature of the PWR in the welded connections between carbon steel and stainless steel piping. The nickel-based weld metal, Alloy 82/182, is used for welding the dissimilar metals and is known to be susceptible to PWSCC. A round-robin program has been implemented to benchmark the numerical simulation of the transient temperature and weld residual stresses in the DMWs. To solve the round-robin problem related to Pressurizer Safety & Relief nozzle, the thermal elasto-plastic analysis is performed in the DMW by using the FEM. The welding includes both the DMW of the nozzle to safe-end and the SMW of the safe-end and piping. Major results of the analyses are discussed: The axial and circumferential residual stresses are found to be -88MPa(225MPa) and -38MPa(293MPa) on the inner surface of the DMW; where the values in parenthesis are the residual stresses after the DMW. Thermo-mechanical interaction by the SMW has a significant effect on the residual stress fields in the DMW.
