Recently rapid-transit railway systems have been constructed in many developing countries due to its advantages in congestions and environmental problems. Railway bridges show many different aspects compared to road bridges and passenger comfort and traffic safety are one of them. In particular, deflection and acceleration due to repeated vibration characteristics have a structural weakness that can cause undesirable response. Especially steel railway bridges have been known to have weaknesses due to its relatively light weights compared to concrete bridges. The purpose of this study is to analyze the dynamic response of steel box girder bridges due to passing trains then propose the appropriate method to mitigate the level of vibration in terms of accelerations. Three steel railway bridges are tested and the numerical model to analyze the dynamic response of the bridge by passing train are developed. For the verification of the model, the natural frequency extracted using the acceleration data measured in the bridge is compared with the natural frequency of the numerical model. To mitigate the acceleration level of the bridge, parametric studies are performed to find the effectiveness of the method. Based on the analysis, the appropriate method is proposed for decreasing the acceleration of the bridge for passenger comfort and traffic safety.
When the crossing frequency of a train meets the natural frequency of a railway bridge, the bridge is bound to become resonant. There are few available time response samples involving a train that passes a bridge at high speed. Very effective modal-parameter extraction techniques for such special high-speed railway bridge conditions are introduced in this paper. Utilizing the cross-correlations of the free-vibration responses after the train passes, mode shapes and the temporal modal parameters (e.g., natural frequency and damping ratio) are extracted using the TDD and SI techniques, respectively. This approach has been applied to a two-span steel composite bridge in the Kyung-Bu high-speed railway system. The estimation results were compared with those obtained using the existing methods. The results fully coincide with those that were extracted using the existing aforementioned technique.

The elevated railway station, above which a train is passing, is vulnerable to noise and vibration compared to other station types. To better identify the vibration characteristics of the elevated railway station, the transferred vibration from approach bridges should be analyzed. In this paper, through experiments and simulations, the transfer characteristics of the vibration from approach bridges is analyzed. The study structure is Geomgok station and the anaylses are conducted using ABAQUS three dimensional numerical model. To identify the change in the transfer characteristics for various bearing types, the analyses are performed considering mechanical properties of bearing for railway bridges. The measurement is performed using the accelerometers attached to the approach bridges and the station structure along the passing path of trains.
It is of great importance to assure the running safety, ride comfort and serviceability in designing the floating slab track for mitigation of train-induced vibration. In this paper, for this, analyzed are the system requirements for the running safety, ride comfort and serviceability, and then, the behavior of train and track at the floating slab track including the transition zone to the conventional concrete slab track according to several main design variables such as system natural frequency, arrangement of spring at transition, spacing of spring isolators, damping ratio and train speed, using the dynamic analysis technique considering the train-track interaction. The results of this study demonstrate that the discontinuity of the support stiffness at the transition results in a drastic increase of the dynamic response such as wheel-rail interaction force, rail bending stress and rail uplift force. Hence, it is efficient to decrease the spacing of springs or to increase the spring constants at the transition to obtain the running safety and serviceability. On the other hand, the vehicle body acceleration as a measure of ride comfort is little affected by the discontinuity of the stiffness at the transition, but by the system tuning frequency; thus, to obtain the ride comfort, it is of great significance to select the appropriate system tuning frequency. In addition, the effects of damping ratio, spacing of springs and train speed on the dynamic behavior of the system have been discussed.
Generally, in the train area, switch tracks have required high reliability because this system is directly associated with derailment. Especially, switch tracks of Maglev vehicles must be moved in terms of the whole geometric characteristics, in which the bogies are encased in the switch track. For this reason, switch track was constructed with steel lighter than concrete girders. But, the steel switch track was weak because of structural vibration as well as structural deformation. Therefore, it is important to predict the levitation stability when a vehicle passes over flexible switch track. The aims of this paper are to develop a coupled dynamic model to describe the relationship between a Maglev vehicle and switch track and to predict the levitation stability. In order to develop the coupled dynamic model, a three dimensional vehicle model was developed based on multibody dynamics; a switch model was made using the modal superposition method. And, the developed model was verified using comparison measured data.

In accordance with the urban development project, cases of constructing temporary wall structures for ground excavation in the vicinity of railway structures are increasing. In addition, the complaints about train vibration are also increasing from people living in large buildings newly built after installing the temporary wall structures. In order to solve this problem, a method for reducing train vibration is considered from the design stage of the building, and a vibration reduction system is installed on the structure when the building is newly constructed. However, the vibration reduction method established at the structure design stage can be determined through the results of field measurements or dynamic numerical analysis for a specific area, and there is a limit to evaluating whether the established vibration reduction method is appropriate due to the lack of objective research data. Therefore, in order to provide objective basic data when establishing a vibration reduction method, this study performed the dynamic numerical analysis for a operating train with a speed 80km/h by applying differently the depths of railway structures, the distances between railways and temporary wall structures, and ground conditions. It was found that the range of influence of a train operating at 80 km/h was within 4.5D of the lateral distance from the railway structure in the case of the condition where the temporary wall was installed.

The majority of high-speed railway bridges along the domestic Gyeongbu and Honam lines feature a PSC-box type structure with a span length ranging from 35 to 40m, which typically exhibits a first bending natural frequency of approximately 4 to 5Hz. When KTX high-speed trains transverse these bridges at speeds ranging from 290 to 310km/h, the vibration induced by the trains approaches the first bending natural frequency of the bridge. Furthermore, with the upcoming operation of a EMU-320 high-speed train and the anticipated increase in the speeds of these high-speed trains, there is a need to analyze the dynamic response of high-speed railway bridges. For this, based on measured responses from actual railway bridges, a numerical model was constructed using a numerical model updating technique. The dynamic response of the updated numerical model exhibited a strong agreement with the measured response from the actual railway bridges. Subsequently, this updated model was utilized to analyze the dynamic response characteristics of the bridges when KTX and EMU-320 trains operate at increased speeds. The maximum vertical displacement and acceleration at the mid-span of the bridges were also compared to those specified in the railway design standard with the increasing speed of KTX and EMU-320.

The high interest for the ground vibrations which is caused by the train service is risen. When the trains are passed, a serious force is applied to ground and the caused vibration is propagated to the area of the building by the ground and rocks. This vibration comes to feel in the residents with the direct vibration, it is radiated in sound. The caused vibration and radiated sound affect the human's life, and this vibration brings about the operation interruption of the equipment which is sensitive to the vibration, or will bring about the structural damage of the building. In this study, the effect of the vibrations caused by the passing trains on the railway station and buildings is investigated by vibration measurement. Indoor and outdoor measurement is carried out by each trains.

In the case of an elevated railway station, structure borne noise and vibration due to structural limitations allow the load and vibration from railway vehicles to be directly transmitted to the station structure, resulting in an increase in the number of civil complaints from customers and staff of the station. The floating slab track system, which is well known as one of the solutions for reducing the noise and vibration from elevated railway stations, usually contains rubber mounts or rubber pads under the railway slab which act as a damper. These types of device have the disadvantage that is difficult to predetermine the exact stiffness and damping ratio under the nonlinear loads resulting from train services. In this study, an isolator with a friction type of wedge is introduced, which can be applied to floating slab track systems and to be designed with precisely the required stiffness. Furthermore, a comparative analysis of the stiffness between the designed and experimental values is carried out, while the damping ratio, which is closely related to the friction wedge blocks, is deduced according to the train load condition. The performance tests of the isolator were conducted in accordance with the DIN 45673-7 standard which includes both static and dynamic load tests. The load conditions for the performance tests are designed to conform to the DIN standard related to the weight of the train and rail track, in order to perform vertical and horizontal load tests, so as to ensure the secure structural safety of the railway. Also, by checking the change aspect of the friction coefficients of the friction elements according to the loading rate, the vibration reduction performance of the friction type isolator with variable loading rate conditions is examined.
