As current manufacturing processes require high spindle speed and precise machining, increasing accuracy by reducing volumetric errors of the machine itself, particularly thermal errors, is very important. Thermal errors can be estimated by many empirical models, for example, an FEM model, a neural network model, a linear regression model, an engineering judgment model, etc. This paper discusses to make a modeling of thermal errors efficiently through backward elimination and fuzzy logic strategy. The model of a thermal error using fuzzy logic strategy overcomes limitation of accuracy in the linear regression model or the engineering judgment model. It shows that the fuzzy model has more better performance than linear regression model, though it has less number of thermal variables than the other. The fuzzy model does not need to have complex procedure such like multi-regression and to know the characteristics of the plant, and the parameters of the model can be mathematically calculated. Also, the fuzzy model can be applied to any machine, but it delivers greater accuracy and robustness.

In the design of structure the forces acting on the structure are important parameter for noise and vibration control. However, in the complex structure, the forces at the injection pomt on the structure cannot be measured directly. Thus it is necessary to find out indirect force evaluation method. In thls paper forces have been measured with in-situ vibration responses and system information. Three existing techniques of indirect force measurement, viz. direct inverse, principal component analysis and regularization have been compared. It has been shown that multi-vibration responses are essential for the precise estimation of the forces. To satisfy those cond~tions, Rotary compressor is adopted as test sample, because it is very difficult to measurc the injection forces from internal excitat~on to shell. It has also been obtained that relatively higher force IS transmitted through three welding paths to the compressor shell. It shows a good agreement between direct and indirect force evaluation wlth curvature shell and plate and is investigated the possibility of force evaluation of rotary compressor as a complex structure.

In order to control thermal deformation of the machine origin of machine tools a empirical model and a compensation system have been developed, Prior to empirical modeling the volumetric error considering shape errors and joint errors of slides is formulated through the homogeneous transformation matrix (HTM) and kinematic chain. Simulation results of the HTM method show that the thermal error of the machine origin is more critical than position-dependent errors. In order to make a stable and effective software error compensation system the GMDH (Group Method of Data Handling) models are constructed to estimate the thermal deformation of the machine origin by measuring deformation data and temperature data. A test bar and gap sensors are used to measure the deformation data. In order to compensate the estimated error the work origin shift method is developed by implementing a digital I/O interface board between a CNC controller and an IBM PC. The method shifts the work origin as much as the amounts which are calculated by the pre-established thermal error model. The experiment results for a vertical machining center show that the thermal deformation of the machine origin is reduced within $\pm$5$mu extrm{m}$.

An orbital grinding system uses a special motion to machine crankshafts in ships. When a crankshaft is operated, eccentric pins rotate and a grinding wheel moves in order to grind the pins. Thermal error caused by heat generated in the grinding process decreases the quality of the final product. In this study, the thermal error of an orbital grinding system caused by heat generation was investigated in order to predict the extent of thermal error that can occur during the grinding process. Since the machine position changes during orbital grinding, the pin part is divided into 30 degree intervals and heat is generated. Total thermal error was measured by summing the thermal errors associated with the pin and the grinding wheel. Total thermal error was found to reach a maximum at 60 degrees and a minimum at 210 degrees because of the shape of the crankshaft.

It can be acquired the high effective productivity through of high speed, precision of machine tools, and then, machine tools will be got a competitive power. Industrially advanced countries already developed that the high speed feed is 60m/min using the high speed ball screw. Also, a lot of problems have happened the feed drive system. It is necessary to study about the characteristics of thermal deformation played a more critical role than static stiffness and dynamic rigidity in controlling the level of machining accuracy. In spite of the improving the thermal deformation characteristics of machine tools at the design stage, there are always some residual errors that have to be compensated for during machining. In this study, thermal deformation error automated compensation device with multiple linear regression is proposed that thermal deformation error can be eliminated at the machining stage. The developed device has been practically applied to the feed drive unit.

In order to control thermal deformation of machine origin of machine tools due to internal and external heat sources, the real-time compensation system has been developed. First, GMDH models were constructed to estimate thermal deformation of machine origin for a vertical machining center through the measurement of deformation data and temperature data of specific points on the machine tool. Thermocouples and gap sensors are used respectively for measurement. These models are nonlinear equations with high-order polynomials and implemented in a multilayered perceptron type network structure. Secondly, work origin shift method were developed by implementing digital I/O interface board between CNC controller and IBM-PC. The work origin shift method is to shift the work origin by the compensation amounts which is calculated by pre-established GMDH model. From the experimental result, thermal deformation of machine origin was reduced to below $\pm$5${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$.

In metal cutting, the machining accuracy is more affected by thermal errors than by geometric errors. This paper models of the thermal errors for error analysis and develops on-the-machine measurement system by which the volumetric error are measured and compensated. The thermal error is modeled by means of angularity errors of a column and thermal drift error of the spindle unit which are measured by the touch probe unit with a star type styluses, a designed spherical ball artifact, and five gap sensors. In order to analyze the thermal characteristics under several operating conditions, experiments performed with the touch probe unit and five gap sensors on the vertical and horizontal machining centers.

A kinematic ball bar measurement system can analyze the various errors of a machine tool easily and rapidly in a procedure and can measure many types of equipment such as chip mounter, PCB router, precision stage, etc. In this paper, the thermally induced errors are loused among various errors of a chip mounter because it affects the accuracy of the machine very much. Linear regression technique is adapted for the thermal error modeling. While the measurement and calibration of a chip mounter is difficult in general, this developed system is not only easy to apply for it but also improves the accuracy by 4 times or more.

In this paper, For improving the positioning accuracy of hydrostatic table, relationship between temperature of atmosphere and thermal characteristics of hydrostatic table is analyzed, and influence of thermal characteristics on positioning accuracy is also analyzed experimentally. From the experimental results, it is confirmed that positioning error and repeatability is $0.21{\mu}m\;and\;0.18{\mu}m$ when the laser scale which has $0.01{\mu}m$ of resolution is used as feed-back unit. and also confirmed that thermal deformation of scale and supporter, which occurs by the temperature variation of atmosphere, works as limit of repeatability in long time operation.
