Acaricidal Activity of (E) - Anethole Derived from Illicium verum and Its Analogues against Dermanyssua gallinae Adults (닭진드기 성충에 대한 대회향 유래 아네톨 및 유사 화합물들의 살비활성)

  • The acaricidal activities of Illicium verum fruit-derived materials against adults of Dermanyssus gallinae were examined using the direct contact application method. Based on laboratory tests, an acaricidal constituent of I. verum fruit was determined because of its potent activity. Results were compared with those of the currently used acaricides such as dichlorvos, diazinon, and carbaryl. The acaricidal principle of I. verum fruit was identified as (E)-anethole using a GC-MS. lts acaricidal activity was compared with those of 12 compounds having a similar chemical moiety. Based on the $LD_{50}$ values, the acaricidal activities of (+)-or-(-)-neomenthol were the strongest (0.01 $mg/cm^2$) and (E)-anethole, (+)-or-(-)-menthol, (${\pm}$)-isoborneol, (-)-menthone, and (lS)-endo-(-)-bomeol showed similar results (0.02 $mg/cm^2$), and (1R)-(+)-camphor and (+)-menthone also gave good activities (0.03 and 0.04 $mg/cm^2$, respectively). These compounds showed more toxic acaricidal activities than diazinon and carbaryl, 0.05 and > 0.2 $mg/cm^2$, respectively, but were not comparable to that of dichlorvos with 0.0002 $mg/cm^2$. These results indicate that the I. verum fruit-derived materials and tested compounds descried as poultry red mites-control agents could be useful for managing field populations of D. gallinae.

Evaluation of Surface Temperature Variation and Heat Exchange Rate of Concrete Road Pavement with Buried Circulating Water Piping (열매체 순환수 배관이 매설된 콘크리트 도로 포장체의 표면 온도 변화와 방열량 평가)

  • Hydronic heated road pavement (HHP) systems have been well established and documented to provide road safety in winter season over the past two decades. However, most of the systems run on asphalt, only a few are tested with concrete, and there rarely is a comparison between those two common road materials in their performance. The aim of this study is to investigate the thermal performance of the concrete HHP systems, including surface temperature variations of experimental pavements in winter season. For preliminary study a small-scale experimental system was installed to evaluate the heat transfer characteristics of the concrete HHP in the test field. The system consists of 3 concrete slabs made of 1 m in width, 1 m in length, and 0.25 m in height. In these slabs, circulating water piping was embedded with different pipe depths of 0.08 m (Case A), 0.12 m (Case B), and 0.20 m (Case C) and same horizontal space of 0.16 m. Heating performance in winter season was tested with different inlet temperatures of 25℃, 30℃, 35℃ and 40℃ during the entire measurement period. Overall, the surface temperature of the concrete HHPs remained above 3℃ in all experimental conditions applied in this study. The results of the surface temperature measurement with respect to the pipe depth showed that Case B was the highest among the three cases. However, the closer the circulating water pipe was to the pavement surface, the greater the heat exchange rate. This results is considered that the heat is continuously accumulated inside the pavements and then the temperature inside the pavements increases, while the amount of heat dissipation decreases as the temperature difference between the inlet and outlet of circulating water decreases. In this preliminary test the applicability of the concrete HHP on road deicing was confirmed. Finally, the results can be used as a basis for studying the effects of various variables on road pavements through numerical analysis and for conducting large-scale empirical experiments.

Phenotypic Alterations in Transgenic Tobacco Plants that Overproduce Cytokinins (Cytokinins overproduction에 따른 담배형질전환체의 변화)

  • Cytokinin is one of major growth regulators in plants. In this study, the gene isopentenyl transferase (jpt) which encodes a key enzyme involved in the biosynthesis of the growth regulator cytokinin isolated from Agrobacterium tumefaciens was introduced ito tobacco plant via Agrobacterium-mediated transformation. The jpt gene was modulated using the proteinase inhibitor II (PI-IIK) promotor. In general, this promoterlipt gene fusion resulted in overproduction of cytokinins throughout the transgenic plants. The overproduction of cytokinin caused dramatic changes in morphology of the plant, including stem thickness and reduced root development. The studies reported in this paper were initiated to examine the consequences of overproduction of cytokinin in plant.

Analysis of Surface Temperature Change and Heat Dissipation Performance of Road Pavement with Buried Circulating Water Piping (열매체 순환수 배관이 매설된 도로 포장체의 표면 온도 변화와 방열 성능 분석)

However, most of the systems run on asphalt, only a few are tested with concrete, and there rarely is a comparison between those two common road materials in their heating and cooling performance. The aim of this study is to investigate the thermal performance of the HHP, such as heat dissipation performance in winter season while focusing on the surface temperature of the concrete and asphalt pavement. For preliminary study a small-scale experimental system was designed and installed to evaluate the heat transfer characteristics of the HHP in the test field. The system consists of concrete and asphalt slabs made of 1 m in width, 1 m in length, and 0.25 m in height. In two slabs, circulating water piping was embedded at a depth of 0.12 m at intervals of 0.16 m. Heating performance in winter season was tested with different inlet temperatures of 25℃, 30℃, 35℃ and 40℃ during the entire measurement period. The results indicated that concrete's heating performance is better than that of asphalt, showing higher surface temperatures for the whole experiment cases. However, the surface temperature of both concrete and asphalt pavement slabs remained above 0℃ for all experimental conditions. The heat dissipation performance of concrete and asphalt pavements was analyzed, and the heat dissipation of concrete pavement was greater than that of asphalt. In addition, the higher the set temperature of the circulating water, the higher the heat dissipation. On the other hand, the concrete pavement clearly showed a decrease in heat dissipation as the circulating water set temperature decreased, but the decrease was relatively small for the asphalt pavement. Based on this experiment, it is considered that a circulating water temperature of 20℃ or less is sufficient to prevent road ice. However, this needs to be verified by further experiments or computational fluid dynamic (CFD) analysis.

A Study on the Ant's Selection of the Diaspores of Four Corydalis Species (현호색속 식물 4종에 대한 개미의 전파체 선택에 관한 연구)

  • To search for myrmecochorous plant species, related ant species and diaspore selecting behaviour, collecting fruits and diaspores of four Corydalis species, cafeteria experiments, and the related ant species were studied from May 2013 to July 2014. Four Corydalis species recording in Korea were proved myrmecochorous (seed attached elaiosome) plants newly. Elaiosome shape of these species is spatulate-shaped, but their size is varied considerably in length and width. Significant differences is proved between four plant species in weight of diaspores, seeds and elaiosomes, and elaiosome ratios. Mean values of diaspores weight showed 4.08 mg, 2.56 mg, 2.49 mg and 2.06 mg in Corydalis grandicalyx, C. remota, C. turtschaninovii for. pectinata and C. turtschaninovii var. linearis, respectively. Mean values of seed weights showed 3.68 mg, 2.03 mg, 1.90 mg and 1.67 mg in Corydalis grandicalyx, C. remota, C. turtschaninovii for. pectinata and C. turtschaninovii var. linearis, respectively. Elaiosome ratio of C. turtschaninovii var. linearis was the highest, followed by C. remota, C. turtschaninovii for. pectinata and C. grandicalyx. Ant's preference for the diaspores is ordered as same as elaiosome ratio's order. Major ant species transporting the diaspores of Corydalis species are Formica japonica, Lasius alienus, Lasius japonicus and Tetramorium tsushimae. Formica japonica transports the diaspores most frequently. Ant's preference for the diaspores among plant species or individuals might be influenced on the survival rates of concerned species. Further studies on the myrmecochorous plant and related ant species, cafeteria experiments should be needed.

First Report of Pink Mold Rot on Tomato Fruit Caused by Trichothecium roseum in Korea (Trichothecium roseum에 의한 토마토 분홍빛열매썩음병 발생)

  • Pink mold rot of tomato occurred very severly on tomato farm in Paju, Gyounggi Province, Korea, in July 2005. The infected fruits were dropped and abandoned and the symptoms were similar to calcium deficient tomatoes. But symptom was a slight water-soaked area on or near the blossom end of the fruit and firm greyish-brown lesions were most found at the blossom-end of affected fruits. lesions caused by the pink mold fungus possess a water soaked margin and rise to characteristic orange-pink spores. Also when the diseased tomato was cut, the inside of tomatoes showed completely rotted with pink mold. The causal fungus was identified as Trichothecium roseum based on mycological characteristics. This is the first report of T. roseum infecting greenhouse tomatoes in Korea.

  • 빛과 공기 중의 이산화탄소를 고정화하여 생성되는 바이오매스(biomass)로부터 다양한 에너지 및 물질을 생산하는 연구는 석유고갈과 환경문제 해결의 한 방안으로서 활발히 진행되어 왔으며, 앞으로도 그 지속 가능성과 환경 친화성에 의해 바이오에너지 이용 및 보급은 꾸준한 증가세를 보일 것으로 전망된다. 바이오디젤, 바이오에탄올의 경우는 미국, 브라질, EU, 한국 등에서 상용화되어 사용되고 있으며 그 생산량이 계속적으로 증가하고 있다. 하지만, 바이오연료의 보급 증가는 식량 자원과의 충돌과 열대우림 파괴 등의 부작용을 일으키고 있다. 이러한 문제 해결의 일환으로 단위면적당 생산성이 대두, 유채보다 월등한 것으로 보고되는 미세조류에 대한 관심이 증가하고 있으며 우수 미세조류종 개발, 미세조류 고속배양 및 수확, 미세조류로부터 에너지 및 유용물질, 소재 생산에 대한 연구가 활발히 진행되고 있다. 본 연구에서는 미세조류로부터 바이오디젤 원료유를 생산하기 위해 Soxhlet을 이용한 추출 방법을 이용하였다. 추출되는 오일은 사용 용매의 극성에 따라 물성과 추출 효율에 차이가 큰 것으로 나타났다. 강한 극성의 용매일 경우, 엽록소와 단백질이 같이 추출되는 문제가 있으며 약한 극성 용매는 세포벽의 방해로 용매가 세포내부로 흡수되지 못하는 문제가 있다. 추출 효율이 높은 극성용매의 경우 불순물을 제거해야 고순도의 바이오디젤의 생산이 가능하고 비극성 용매는 추출 오일의 물성은 좋으나 수율이 매우 낮게 측정되었다. 이러한 동시추출을 방지함과 동시에 추출 효율을 높이기 위해 본 연구에서는 세포벽 파괴 후 용매추출하는 방법으로서 미세조류를 Microwave에 노출시켜 오일 추출율을 증가시키는 전처리 연구를 수행하였다. 전처리시, Microwave에 의한 열 발생은 미세조류를 탄화시키기 때문에 열매체로서 물을 혼합하여 탄화를 방지하고 세포벽 내외부의 가열효과로 세포벽을 파괴하고자 하였다. Microwave에 의한 에너지 손실을 줄이며 세포벽 파괴에 효과적인 수분혼합비를 조사하였으며 Microwave에 노출 후 잔류수분을 건조하고 효율적으로 용매를 접촉시키기 위해 분쇄를 수행하였다. 모든 전처리 반응을 거친 미세조류에서 약 2배 증가된 추출수율을 얻을 수 있었으며, SEM을 통해 전처리 미세조류와 미전처리 미세조류를 분석해본 결과 전처리 미세조류의 다공성이 증가함을 확인하였다. 또한, 90%의 메탄올에 미세조류를 녹여 엽록소 함유량을 측정한 결과, 전처리 미세조류의 엽록소가 미전처리 미세조류보다 약 7배가량 감소함을 확인할 수 있었다.

The Inhibitory Effect on Androgen Receptor-Dependent Prostate Cancer Cell Growth by Anti-Histone Acetyltransferase Activity from Terminalia chebula Retz. Fruit Methanol Extract (가자(Terminalia chebula Retz.) 열매 메탄올 추출물의 Histone Acetyltransferase 활성 저해에 따른 항전립선암 효과)

  • The inhibitory effect of histone acetyltransferase from methanol extract of Terminalia chebula Retz. fruit (TCME) was investigated in prostate cancer cell. TCME significantly inhibited histone acetyltransferase (HAT) activity by over 50% at 100 ${\mu}g/mL$ concentration. TCME treatment repressed androgen receptor (AR) mediated transcription, mRNA level of AR target genes, prostate specific antigen (PSA) and NKX-3.1, as well as AR acetylation. Finally, the prostate cancer cell viability was dramatically reduced by TCME treatment at 0~100 ${\mu}g/mL$ concentration. These results indicated that TCME, as a potent HAT inhibitor, could suppress prostate cancer cell growth by AR mediated transcription regulation.

Suppressive Effect of Bacterial Isolates from Plant Rhizosphere against Late Blight Caused by Phytophthora citrophthora on Citrus Fruits (식물근권에서 분리한 세균을 처리한 감귤열매에서 감귤 역병 억제 효과)

  • Suppression effect of the 12 bacterial isolates from plant rhizosphere against late blight caused by Phytophthora citrophthora were investigated on citrus fruits. Among the bacterial isolates, THJ609-3, TRH423-3, BRH433-2, Lyso-chit and KRY505-3 presented disease suppression after wound inoculation with the fungal pathogen in vivo. The anti-fungal activity was evaluated by measuring the length of inhibition zone of the mycelium P. citrophthora adjacent to the effective bacterial isolates in which all of the 5 bacterial isolates showed antagonistic effects. However, there was no positive correlations between the efficacy of disease suppression and the antagonistic effect. On the other hand, Lyso-chit and KRY505-3 were identified as Bacillus cereus, BRH433-2 as B. circulans and TRH423-3 as Burkholderia gladioli, respectively, by analysis of rDNA sequence on the internal transcript spaces. It is suggested that the effective bacterial isolates may be useful for finding biological control agents against late blight especially on environment-friendly farm where the application of fungicide is limited.

Evaluation on Characteristics and Economical Efficiency of X-L Pipe Boiler with Electric Heat Closed Type (전열밀폐식 X-L 파이프 보일러 난방장치의 특성 및 경제성 평가)

  • In these days, the gas or kerosene boiler was usually used as heating system. This study was carried out to investigate the merits of X-L pipe boiler with electric heat line that was specially manufactured. The electric heat line was inserted into inside of X-L pipe and voltage was impressed to electric heat line and, as a result, temperature of X-L pipe filled with heat medium was increased. As changing the number of electric heat line and voltage, the characteristics of X-L pipe boiler and its mechanism on heat generation were studied. Furthermore, the economical efficiency was evaluated by comparing heating cost of X-L pipe boiler with those of kerosene boiler and natural gas boiler, respectively. As the results, it was confirmed that heating cost of X-L pipe boiler was showed as 28% of kerosene boiler and 58% of natural gas boiler.
