A study on the performance of the finned tube heat exchanger affected by the frosting using CFD tool (전산해석을 이용한 착상이 핀튜브 열교환기 성능에 미치는 영향에 관한 연구)

  • We conducted a study by computational simulation about the effects of frost thickness on the pressure drop and heat transfer characteristics as whole heat exchanger configuration changes. In order to perform the analysis for validation, we assumed that frost properties have constant values and the frost layers that are formed on the fin and tube surfaces are uniform. In order to find the constant thermal conductivity of frost layer, a variety of frost thermal conductivities are performed in our work and compared with the results by Lee et al. [4] and Yang et al. [5] proposed many experimental data about the 2-rows and 2-columns finned tube heat exchanger. The numerical results agreed well with the experimental data when frost conductivity is 0.07W/mK. After the validation had performed, we applied this procedure to the finned tube heat exchanger of domestic refrigeration and investigated the thermo-hydraulic characteristic of the heat exchanger affected by frost thickness according to the inlet velocities and temperatures of air considering the configuration change such as fin pitch.

Heat Transfer Characteristics of Individual Rows for Fin-and-Tube Heat Exchangers (핀-관 열교환기의 열별 열전달 특성)

  • The row-by-row heat transfer characteristics of fin-and-tube heat exchangers were experimentally investigated. Three wavy fin samples having different rows (one, two and three) and one plain fin sample (three row) were tested for $600{\leq}Re_{D}{\leq}4,000$. The heat transfer data were obtained for individual rows, and the corresponding heat transfer coefficients were reduced from the data. Results showed that the heat transfer coefficients were strongly dependent on the tube row. The heat transfer coefficient decreased as the tube row increased. However, the row effect was different depending on the fin shape. For the wavy fin, the row effect significantly decreased as the Reynolds number increased, yielding approximately the same heat transfer coefficients at $Re_{D}{\approx}2,500$. For the plain fin, however, the row effect lasted for the whole Reynolds number range. The increased mixing of bulk flow by wavy channels appears to induce high heat transfer coefficient (accordingly diminishing row effect) at downstream rows. The heat transfer coefficients of individual rows were higher for heat exchangers having larger tube rows.

Experimental Study on the Heat Transfer Characteristics of Spiral Fin-Tube Heat Exchangers (나선형 핀튜브 열교환기의 열전달 특성에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • This study experimentally examines the air-side performance of spiral finned tube heat exchangers. The effects of fin spacing, fin height, and tube alignment were investigated. Reduction of fin spacing decreased the Colburn j factor. However, the effect of fin height on the Colburn j factor was negligible. An increase of tube row decreased the Nusselt number for both staggered and in-line tube alignments. However, the decrease of the Nusselt number for the in-line tube alignment was much more significant than that of the staggered tube alignment. The average Nusselt number of the staggered tube alignment was larger than that of the in-line tube alignment by $10\%$ when the Reynolds number ranged from 300 to 1700. An empirical correlation of the Nusselt number was developed by using geometric parameters of heat exchanger and correction factors. The correction factor considered the effects of tube alignment and number of tube rows on the heat transfer. The proposed correlation yielded a mean deviation of $4\%$ from the present data.

  • 열교환기는 공조 및 기타 산업현장에서 많은 수요가 창출되고 있는데 본 논문에서는 3차원 수치해석을 이용하여 수송기계의 오일쿨러나 연료쿨러에 쓰이는 전형적인 열교환기에 대한 방열 성능을 해석하였다. 열교환기의 핀 타입 중 wavy 및 louver에 대하여 열교환기 성능 실험 데이터를 이용하는 3차원 열교환기 모델을 완성하고 통과 풍량에 따른 열교환량을 예측하였다. 이는 열교환기를 통과하는 풍속이 균일하지 않을 때 열교환량을 예측할 수 있어 설계 정확성 향상에 기여할 수 있다.

Numerical Analysis of Heat Transfer of Aligned Wing Type Pin-Fin Array of Air Cooling Module with Various Fin Shapes for Electronic Packaging Application (날개형 핀-휜의 기하학적 형상이 전자기기 모듈 냉각용 공기냉각기의 유동 및 열전달에 미치는 영향)

  • In this study, the flow and heat transfer of the aligned pin-fin array of the air cooling module for electronic packaging application were numerically analyzed with various fin shapes. The geometric cross-sectional shapes of pin-fins considered in this study were ellipse, wing and circle. The fins had same cross-sectional area and height, but they had different surface areas. As the results, the surface area, the heat transfer coefficient, and the heat transfer performance of pin-fins greatly depended on their shapes. Of the three types of pin-fins, the wing type pin-fin with suitable shape produced the best heat transfer performance. This result implies that the cooling capacity of the pin-fin cooler can be significantly enhanced only by the change of fin shape without increasing air flow-rate or fin density.

  • A numerical and experimental flow visualization study of the louvered fin array, commonly used in a compact heat exchanger was performed. The flow structure which was obtained by using a finite difference method, was compared with an experimental result. The experimental flow visualization was performed by using a dye injection technique with 13:1 scale model. The effects of Reynolds number and fin geometries on flow structure and heat transfer were examined.

  • Performance of the asymmetric trapezoidal fin with various upper lateral surface slopes is investigated by using the two-dimensional analytic method. For a fin base boundary condition, convection from the inner fluid to the inner wall, conduction from the inner wall to the fin base and conduction through the fin base are considered. Heat loss and fin efficiency are represented as a function of the fin base thickness, base height, inner fluid convection characteristic number, fin tip length and fin shape factor. One of the results shows that heat loss increases while fin efficiency decreases as the fin shape factor increases.

Performance Evaluation in Fin-Tube Heat Exchanger by Tow-In Winglet Pairs (Tow in 와류발생기에 의한 핀-관 열교환기의 성능실험)

  • To reduce the air side pressure drop in air-cooled heat exchanger, tow-in type winglet vortex generators are applied. A specially designed multiple-channel test core was used in the experiments for the various geometry of winglet vortex generators. The proposed tow-in type vortex generator gives significant separation delay, reduces form drag, and removes the zone of poor heat transfer from near-wake of the tubes. The results show the significant pressure drop reduction for the tow-in win91e1 vortex generators with the similar enhancement of the heat transfer as other vortex generator applications in heat exchanger. In the range of Reynolds number of 350 to 2100 the pressure drop decrease 8∼15% and 34∼55% for the in-line and staggered tube banks, respectively, compared to those without vortex generators.

  • For the study of performance evaluation on different shape heat exchangers that have the same energy consumption in a refrigerator, we make performance evaluation coefficient (PEC) which can distinguish performance of different shape heat exchangers. The results were reported in order to compare with for the dry frosting and wet frosting test as various definition of PECs. Results showed that PEC of dry frosting test is higher than that of wet frosting test because attached water droplet increases pressure drop of air-side then this decreases performance of heat exchanger.
