Development of Hybrid Expander Unit for Fin Tube Heat Exchanger (핀튜브 열교환기용 전관확관 유닛 개발)

  • In this paper, the hybrid tube expander unit for fin and tube type heat exchanger are developed by means of enlarging and inserting the smooth tube with a small diameter to a finned tube having larger diameter. In other word, the tube expander tool that is easy to attach and remove from tube is developed. The hybrid tube expander unit developed in this study can move easily and enlarge the tube without fixing at tube sheet. Also, this unit has a function removing scales inside tube by replacing a tube expander ball.

  • The off-set strip fins (OSF) have been widely used to construct plate-fin heat exchangers. Conventional OSF is constructed in successive rows of fins. New OSF structure is suggested to have a gap between adjacent rows of fins. The gap is intended to reduce fouling by allowing small objects to flow through fins. The objective of this work is to investigate the performance of off-set strip fins with gap between successive rows. Results showed that the performance of OSF with gap can't be predicted by previous correlation.

  • Heat transfer and pressure drop for ${\phi}10.07$ dry surface fin-tube heat exchanger with wave and wave-slit fins were measured for different fin spacings and number of tube rows. Longitudinal and transverse tube spacings of the heat exchangers are 21.65mm and 25mm respectively, and wave depth of wave fin is 1.5mm. The experiments were performed for 4 different fin spacings, 1.3, 1.5, 1.7 and 2.0mm, and the number of tube rows were 1,2 and 3 rows. The present results were compared with the previous results for the wave depth of 2mm. Also hydrophilic coated and bare fins were tested. Correlations for Colburn j-factor and friction factor were developed.

Wet surface performance test of fin-tube heat exchangers with slit-wavy fin (물결형 슬릿핀이 장착된 핀-관 열교환기의 습표면 성능 실험)

  • In this study, the wet surface heat transfer coefficients and friction factors of the heat exchanger with slit-wavy fin were measured. Four sample cores of two or three row with fins of 12 fpi or 16 fpi were tested. Tests were conducted in a closed loop wind tunnel, where the heat exchanger was mounted at 45 degree inclination angle. The wet surface heat transfer coefficient was reduced following the procedure given in ARI 420-81. During the course, new definitions of the $\varepsilon$-NTU applicable to enthalpy driving system were introduced. The wet surface heat transfer coefficients were approximately equal to the dry surface values. However, the friction factors were approximately 120% to 170% higher than those of the dry surface. Both the heat transfer coefficient and the friction factor of the wet surface increased as the relative humidity increased, fin pitch decreased, and the number of row decreased, although the difference was not large.

  • In this study, a guide vane with varying positions and incidence angles was adopted to a pin-fin channel to analyze the change in thermal performance and pressure loss characteristics. A numerical analysis was conducted to investigate the effect of incidence angles and positions on heat transfer and flow characteristics at Re =1400. The results of it were compared those of a pin-fin channel without a guide vane. In case 1 when the incidence angle is $0^{\circ}$, the heat transfer performance is maximized and improved by approximately 5% when compared to the pin-fin channel without the guide vane. In case 2 when the incidence angle is $10^{\circ}$, the pressure loss is minimized and decreased by approximately 1.9% when compared to the pin-fin channel without the guide vane.

Characteristics of Heat Recovery Rate and Fouling according to Structures and Materials in Heat Exchangers (열교환장치의 구조 및 재질에 따른 열회수율과 파울링의 발생 특성)

  • We researched characteristics of heat recovery rate and fouling according to structures and materials in heat exchangers like water preheater and air preheater. Economizer and air preheater have used in thermal electric power plant. we made small incinerator and heat exchangers to carry out simulated experiment. We observed fouling formation and change of heat recovery rate, combusting powdered coal for 24 hr. In economizer, fin tube type had the largest amount of fouling formation, followed by tube line type > pipe type > auto washing type according to structures. As heat recovery rate, fin tube showed highest recovery rate, followed by auto washing type > pipe type > tube line type. In air preheater, fin tube type had the largest amount of fouling formation, followed by fin plate type > pipe type > pipe type coated by teflon > pipe type coated by ceramic according to structures. And then, heat recovery rate showed the same oder.

  • The flow and heat transfer characteristics of a heat exchanger having rectangular pin-fin in the flow direction have been investigated numerically. On the bottom plate, the convective boundary conditions for the hot side was given, and the fins were arranged in a channel-type geometric model using the periodic boundary condition in the span-wise direction. Three-dimensional numerical calculations for the flow and conjugate heat transfer problem were conducted using SIMPLE algorithm and $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model. For the slanted pin-fin models, it was found that the downward cooling flow is generated due to the downward pressure gradient component, which can enhance the heat transfer performance near the bottom surface and the fin stem region. Four different inclined angles were considered in the Reynolds number range of 13,500-55,000. The aero-thermal performance of the slanted pin-fin heat exchangers, such as the volume and area goodness factors, were summarized and compared with the baseline plate-fin type heat exchanger quantitatively.

  • The objective of this study is to numerically investigate the thermal characteristics of an automobile exhaust-based heat exchanger for automotive thermoelectric power generation with various exhaust gas mass flow rates and temperatures. The heat exchanger for automotive thermoelectric power generation has a square-type pin installed inside, so the maximum amount of heat can be transferred to the thermoelectric element from the heat energy coming from the automobile exhaust gas. The exhaust gas mass flow rate changed from 0.01, to 0.02, to 0.03 kg/s, and the exhaust gas temperature changed from 400, to 450, to 500, to 550, to $600^{\circ}C$, respectively. A numerical simulation was conducted by using the commercial program ANSYS CFX v17.0. Consequently, the exhaust gas pressure difference between the inlet and the outlet of the heat exchanger is determined according to the flow rate of the exhaust gas. When the mass flow rate of the exhaust gas increased, the pressure difference between the inlet and the outlet of the heat exchanger increased, but the exhaust gas pressure difference between the inlet of the heat exchanger and the outlet did not vary with the exhaust gas temperature. Therefore, in order to obtain the maximum surface temperature from the heat exchanger, the exhaust gas mass flow rate should be lower, and the exhaust gas temperature should be higher.

  • The present study has been conducted to understand the heat and mass transfer characteristics of humid airflow in frosting conditions. A flat plate of aluminum was used for the simulation of flat surface part of the fin of the heat exchanger. The aluminum surface temperatures were measured and analyzed to clarify the heat and mass transfer characteristics under frosting conditions. Also, the pressure drops were measured to clarify the air-blocking effect of frost in the mini channel of the air-side hoot exchangers. A data reduction method was developed far the analysis of local characteristics of humid air under frosting conditions.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the enhancement of heat transfer coefficient in double pipe fluidized bed heat exchangers. The inner tube used a smooth tube and a finned tube equipped with longitudinal fins. The heat transfer coefficients between the heated tube and fluidized bed of alumina beads were calculated as a function of fluidized velocity in various particle sizes($d_p$=0.41, 0.54, 0.65, 0.77mm) and static bed heights($H_o$=50, 100, 150, 200, 250mm). The coefficient for finned tube is higher than for smooth tube. And the maximum increasing rate is 7.8 times in smooth tube and 12.9 times in finned tube.
