This study was conducted to develop the growth model for diameter at breast height (DBH) and basal area (BA) of Larix leptolepis stands grown in eastern mountain areas, Jeollabuk-do and to enhance the precision of the models by adding regional and climatal factors, such as altitude, mean annual rainfall, and mean annual temperature. In results, it was analyzed that Schumacher polymorphic equation might be the best model to estimate DBH and BA growth. In case of the DBH growth model, precision was improved by adding altitude and mean annual rainfall. Moreover, in case of the BA growth model, precision was improved by adding mean annual rainfall. Meanwhile, it would be necessary for more precise model to add various factors, such as stand density, mortality, thinning ratio, and edaphic status along with regional and climatal factors.
To develope reforestation methods for enviromentally sound and ecological forest management, Fraxinus rhynchophylla stand structure and radial growth of the trees were invstigated and compared by study sites. Plantation forest studied on Fraxinus rhynchophylla, was located at Jawoon-ni Nae-myeun, Hongcheon-gun and natural forest studied on Fraxinus rhynchophylla, was located at Jangjeon-ni Jinbu-myeun, Pyeungchang-gun. In 7,8 years after planting, differences of annual diameter increment among three stand origins were significant. The highest mean annual diameter increments of F. rhynchophylla, 4.60 mm/year was measured in sprouting trees, and followed by natural seedlings 4.59 mm/year. The lowest values, 4.18mm/year did in planting trees. Early radial growth of planting F. rhynchophylla was measured lower than that of sprouting or natural seedlings. These facts mean that planting F. rhynchophylla is not proper regeneration methods. Other regeneration methods of F. rhynchophylla forest, by sproutings, direct seeding and natural seeding, might be researched and recommended.
To estimate planting results of deciduous broad-leaved species, forest structure and radial growth of the trees were investigated and compared by species and studied sites. Plantation forest studied on Juglans mandshurica, was located at Jawoon-ni Nae-myeun, Hongcheon-gun and natural forest studied on Juglans mandshurica, was located at Jangjeon-ni Jinbu-myeun, Pyeungchang-gun. In 9 years after planting, differences of annual diameter increment among three stand origins were significant. The highest mean annual diameter increments of J. mandshurica, 7.31mm/year was measured in natural seedlings, and followed by sprouting trees 6.93mm/year. The lowest values, 5.28mm/year did in planting trees. Early radial growth of planting J. mandshurica was measured lower than that of sprouting or natural seedlings. These facts means that planting J. mandshurica is not proper regeneration methods. Other regeneration methods of J mondshurica forest, by sproutings, direct seeding and natural seeding, might be researched and recommended.
To develope reforestation methods for environmentally sound and ecological forest management, stand structure and radial growth of the trees were investigated and compared by species and study sites. Plantation forest studied on Betula costata, Betula platyphylla var. japonica and Betula davurica, was located at Jawoon-ni Nae-myeun, Hongcheon-gun and natural forest studied on Betula costata, was located at Jangjeon-ni Jinbu-myeun, Pyeungchang-gun. In 12.3 years after planting, differences of annual diameter increment among three Betula species were significant. The highest mean annual diameter increments, 7.67mm was measured in planting Betula costata, and followed by planting Betula platyphylla var. japonica and Betula davurica, and the lowest values. 4.32mm did in natural Betula costata. If planting Genus Beula in this district. Betula costata might be the best species. From these facts, massive planting of three Betula species in this district might have much problems, but might be evaluated as proper trial.
In this study, growth changes of the diameter at breast height (DBH), height, basal area, volume, and biomass of Korean white pine (Pinus koraiensis Siebold & Zucc.) on a plantation were examined via long-term monitoring. In addition, this study was performed to provide the basic data for timber production in line with DBH class by comparing the growth of the relative DBH size. Growth characteristics according to DBH class were analyzed by categorizing trees into five classes based on sorted DBH rankings: class I (1%-20%; upper 20%), class II (21%-40%), class III (41%-60%), class IV (61%-80%), class V (81%-100%; lower 20%). A total class (0%-100%) was also used. Total increment and mean annual increment (MAI) were calculated using data from nine measurements taken over 39 years. Tree characteristics based on average values and stand characteristics based on unit area per hectare were examined. According to the total increments of variables, the differences in DBH, basal area, volume, and biomass among classes I-V increased over time, whereas the height difference did not continually increase. According to MAI, the maximum DBH value was 0.92 cm·yr-1 at age 23 in class I, whereas the maximum value in all trees was 0.69 cm·yr-1 at age 17. The maximum value of height MAI for class I was 0.52 m·yr-1 at age 23, whereas that for all trees was 0.49 m·yr-1 at age 20. In terms of basal area, volume, and biomass growth at tree-and stand-level, the maximum MAI of class I and all trees was not observed during the measurement period. Therefore, additional long-term monitoring data are required to determine the maximum MAI of the variables.
This study purposed to judge potential possibility of building highly precise empirical model using environmental variables. Environmental variables such as altitude, mean annual rainfall, mean annual temperature and organic matter ratio of soil were added to height and diameter model for Chamaecyparis obtusa, and examined accuracy and residuals of prediction model. Improvement in precision was found for the Gompertz polymorphic height model by including mean temperature and altitude as independent variables, while the Gompertz diameter model with annual rainfall and altitude was showed improvement of precision and accuracy. Comparing the improvement of precision between the model before adding environmental variables and the model after adding them, an improvement or some ratio was obtained though it is not obvious. Therefore, there is enough proof that adding environmental variables, which can be easily acquired relatively when considering the difficulties of measurement and budget, into the model as independent variables would improve the accuracy and precision of growth models.
Populus alba x glandulosa shows greater growth performance in the lower part of the hill than in the upper part. In order to study this reason, correlation between the soil factors and the growth was examined. The results were as follows. 1. Annual mean height growth was 1.29m in foot hill but 0.7m in upper part, showing 184$\%$ better growth in the foot hill than in the upper part and the similar situation was shown in the diameter growth. The longer slope distance, the better growth: generally the good growth shows in the first harf of the distance. 2. High positive correlation shows between the growth performance and soil moisture: r=0.76 in the hight and r=0.71 in the diameter, and also positive correlation between soil depth and the growth performance. r=0.65 in the height and r=0.79 in the diameter. On the other hand, negative correlation between the slope and soil depth are considered as limiting factors to the growth. 3. A significant correlation appeared between growth performance and organic matter and between the growth performance and total nitrogen as well. This shows that the nutrient elements were contained much in the foot hill. 4. The correlation between the height growth and potassium, and between the growth and calcium and pH were shown . 5. However, no correlation was shown between the growth and available phosphate, magnesium and available managanese .
This study was conducted to construct a empirical yield table for Pinus densiflora in real forest. Since existing normal yield tables have been derived by studying and analyzing communities in ideal environment for tree growth, those tables provide more over-estimated values than ones from real forest. Because of this, there are some difficulties to apply the tables to empirical forest except for normal forest. In this study, therefore, we estimated stand growth for real forest on P. densiflora as the representative species of conifers. We used 1,957 sample plot data of P. densiflora in central Korea from National Forest Inventory (NFI) system, and analyzed through estimation, recovery and prediction in order by using Weibull function as a diameter distribution model. Weilbull and Schumacher models were applied for estimating mean DBH and mean basel area and it was found that the site index for P. densiflora in central Korea ranges from 8 to 14 at reference age 30. According to site 12 in the stand yield table, the Mean Annual Increment (MAI) of P. densiflora was $4.42m^3/ha$ at 30 years of age. Compared to existing volume table constructed before, it is showed that MAI of this study were lower. According to the paired t-test that is conducted with the gap of volume values between normal forest and real forest by site index and age, the P-value was less than 0.001 which is recognized to have a statistically significant difference. Based on the results in this study, it is considered to be helpful for practical management and management policy on P. densiflora in central Korea.

Forest vegetation types and growth characteristics of Seongin-bong at Ulleung Island in Korea were studied by using importance values, distributions of diameter classes, and annual growth analysis. Vegetation types were classified into 7 groups. The number of existing woody plant and herbaceous plant species varied from 17 to 21 species per $100m^2$. In case of life-forms importance values, woody and herbs showed average values of 47% and 53% across 5 groups. But in Tsuga sieboldii-Pinus parviflora and Fague engleriana- Taxus cuspidata var. latifolia groups, woody importance values were 68% and 54%, respectively. Diameter classes in most stand types were regularly distributed and showed continuous growth in annual diameter growth. from these results, this site is expected to maintain a stable vegetation structure continuously. F. engleriana, which forms major species in this site, showed 0.46-0.62 cm in annual average diameter growth. The annual average diameter growth of broad-leaved tree species was 0.2-0.6 cm, while the growth rate of T. sieboldii and P. parviflora was 0.38 cm and that of T. cuspidata var, latifolia was below 0.1 cm.
This study was conducted to investigate the changes in soil temperature, soil moisture content, light availability (photosynthetically active radiation, PAR) and diameter growth in 46-year-old Korean pine (Pinus koraiensis Siebold et Zuccarini) plantation located in Gwangneung experimental forest after 4 years from thinning. Three different thinning intensities [control, 45%(T45), and 60%(T60) basal area reduction] were applied in 2004. Mean soil temperature and soil water content were $8.9^{\circ}C$ and 14.3% for control, $10^{\circ}C$ and 16.1% for T45 and $10.2^{\circ}C$ and 16.1% for T60, respectively. Mean soil temperature and moisture content were significantly different among the treatment plots (p<0.05). Mean PAR in control, T45 and T60 was 44, 143 and178 ${\mu}mol/m^2$/sec, respectively and the differences were also statistically significant among the treatment plots (p<0.05). Mean annual diameter growth in control, T45 and T60 was 0.4, 1.5 and 1.2 mm, respectively. Diameter growth of Pinus koraiensis was steadily increased after thinning in comparison to control. Consequently, the results suggested that soil temperature, soil moisture content and light availability were likely to last beyond the 4 years after thinning in this Korean pine plantation.
