  • In order to investigate the utilization of industrial waste and briquette ash for concrete production, briquette ash was used as fine aggregate for mortar production and three different kinds mortars were produced by mixing carbide and bottom aches with cement. These products were compared with mortar, produced by standard sand, in the respects of compressive, tensil and bending strengths. Further study on the economic aspect of utilization of briquette ash is needed but the results obtained from our preliminary study are summarized as follows : 1. The compressive strengths at the age of seven days of mortars, made of one to two ratios of cement to briquette ash, (cement+carbide ash) to briquette ash and(cement+bottom ash) to briquette ash were 70%, 61% and 58%, respectively, of the mortar made of standard sand. The compressive strengths of those mortars at the age of 28 days were 56%, 49% and 48% of the mortar made standard sand. 2. The compressive strengths at the age of seven days of the mortar made of one to two ratios of cement to briquette ash, (cement+carbide ash) to briquette ash and (cement+bottom ash) to briquette ash were 84%, 73%, and 70% of the mortar which was produced according to Korean Standard Value. The compressive strengths of those mortars at the age of 28 days were 85%, 73% and 73% of the mortar of the Korean Standard value. 3. The tensil strengths at the age of seven days of the mortars made of one to two ratios of cement to briquette ash, (cement+carbide ash) to briquette ash, and (cement+bottom ash) to briquette ash were 64%, 36%, and 36%, respectively, of the mortar of standard sand. The tensil strengths of those mortars at the age of 28 days were 70%, 47%, and 39%, respectively, of the standard mortar. The mortars made of one to two ratios of cement to briquette ash at the age of seven and 28 days were higher than the mortars of Korean Standard. The other mortars were 61 to 62% at the age of seven days and 75 to 90% at the age of 28 days of the Korean Standard mortar, respectively. 4. The bending strengths at the age of seven days of mortar made of one to two ratios of cement to briquette ash, (cement+carbide ash) to briquette ash, and (cement+bottom ash) to briquette ash were 46%, 53% and 50% of the mortar of standard sand. The bending strengths of those mortars at the age of 28 days were 90%, 77% and 69%, respectively of the mortar of standard sand. 5. The mortar of briquette ash which was lower in strengths compared with the mortar of cement have shown possibility of its secondary products of cement and concrete. The uses of briquette ash and industrial waste as construction materials would contribute toward solving various pollution problems caused by industrial wastes and saving labor costs needed to cleaning up. Furthermore, the effective use of briquette ash would greatly save the aggregate resources.

  • This study made to find the variation of strengths of briquette ash which were hardened into cement. The briquette ash were mixed with the cement, ((cement (90%)+slaked lime (10%)) and ((cement (80%)+fly ash (20%)) in the ratio of 1:2, 1:3, 1:4, 1:5, 1:7 and 1:9, respectively, and these were compared with the one made of cement plus standard sand in the strengths of compression, tension and bending at the ages of 7 days and 28 days. The results from the study conducted preliminary without studying the economical aspects or duration of the products are summarized as follows: 1. The compressive strengths of mortar made of 1 to 2 ratios of cement to briquette ash, (cement+slaked lime) to briquette ash and (cement+fly ash) to briquette ash were 84%, 90% and 75% at the age of 7 days and 84.9%, 73.5% and 69.8%, respectively of those of Korean Standard values. 2. The compressive strength s of mortar made of 1 to 2 ratios of cement to briquette ash, (cement+slaked lime) to briquette ash and (cement+fly ash) to briquette ash were 69.3%, 75.1% and 41.3% at the age of 7 days and 56.4%, 49%, and 46.5% at the age of 28 days, respectively of the mortar made of standard sand. 3. The tension strengths of mortar made of 1 to 2 ratios of cement to briquette ash, (cement+slaked lime) to briquette ash, and (cement+fly ash) to briquette ash were 64.4%, 47.1% and 35.4% at the age of 7days and 69.6%, 64.8%, and 57.3%, respectively of that of the mort ar produced with standard sand. 4. The bending strengths of mortar made of 1 to 2 ratios of cement to briquette ash, (cement+slaked lime) to briquette ash, and (cement+fly ash) to briquette ash were 46.3%, 65.9% and 39.1% at the age of 7 days and 89.9%, 96.7%, and 85.1%, respectively of that of mortar produced with standard sand. 5. The bending strength of the mortar was lower than that of cement mortar, when the briquette ash were harqened into cement. However, the mortar produced by such method seemed to be used as the secondary products of cement or concrete. The additional usefullness of the hardened biquette ash can be found in contributing toward the solving the various pollution problems, the saving the labor costs needed to clean-up waste materials, and the saving the construction materials.

  • It was investigated by experimental method whether fine powder and coarse particle obtained by briquet cinders crushing could be used in the place of cement and fine aggregate or coarse aggregate for concrete. Except these experiments, further study, containing the fundamental physical properties of briquet cinders and the mechanical properties of concrete using briquet cinders, is needed for practical use, but these experimental results suggest the possibility for using briquet cinders as materials for mortar or concrete.

  • Coal briquette use has dramatically increased because of high oil prices. Hence, it is necessary to develop an environment-friendly recycling technique of the coal briquette ash. The coal briquette ash contains a large amount of an unburned carbon content and a mullite with high thermal property, so it is considered to be used as raw materials of sintered eco-brick. This study aimed to investigate on how the unburned carbon affects properties of the sintered eco-brick. The eco-brick was mixed with the ratio of 50 wt% coal briquette ash having the unburned carbon 10.5 wt% and 50 wt% cullet, then being sintered at $950^{\circ}C$, which of the compressive strength was in line with the first class of the sintered clay brick standard(KS L 4201). In particular, the compressive strength of the sintered eco-brick was equal to the first class of the KS L 4201 despite the increase of mixing ratio for coal briquette ash with 1.0 wt% unburned carbon to 70 wt%.

  • We have investigated the efficacy and efficiency of the used briquets for the sewage treatment in this study. The effluent of wastewater treated by Used Briquets Process (UBP) showed very low values of $BOD_5$, CODcr, and SS (1.1 mg/L, 9.5 mg/L, and 3.8mg/L, respectively), which corresponded to 99%, 92.7%, and 96.3% of removal efficiency to the raw wastewater. The number of total bacteria and E. coli in the effluent water treated by UBP was found to be 9 and 1.2 cfu/ml, respectively, showing the remarkable decrease in number, when compared to that of other sewage treatment plants. In the long period of experiment over 1 year, UBP has also shown the high removal efficiency with less sludge production, and low seasonal fluctuation of the values. This UBP is very environmentally-friendly process in the aspects of recycling used briquets and reducing the sludge production. We think that this process will be useful for both the small-scale sewage treatment and reuse of the effluent water.

  • This study was conducted to develop the homemade soil media adequate to raising rice seedlings for machine transplanting. A raising experiment of rice seedlings was tested on a newly developed soil medium made mainly from briquette ash compared to ones of infertile red earth and fertile paddy loams. Dry weight of rice seedlings at 36 days after seeding was slighly lower in the plot of briquette ash that in soils, however, it was quite good in the plot of briquette ash mixed with zeolite and diatomaceous earth. pH in soil media was high in briquette ash and also high in soils mixed compost compared with out compost treatment, resulting in higher occurrence of damping off or physiological disorder. Good rice seedlings could be raised in soil media without compost and briquette ash mixed with zeolite diatomaceous earth.

  • This study was conducted to determine the effect of curing temperature on the strength of briquette ash mortar hardened by cement. The six different kinds of briquette ash mortars were made by mixing the cement : briquette ash, ((cement (90%)+lime (10%)) : briquette ash and cement : standard sand at the ratio of 1:2, 1:3, 1:4, 1:5, 1:7, and 1:9, respectively and the cu ring temperatures were $20^{\circ}C$, $30^{\circ}C$, and $35^{\circ}C$. The strength of compression, bending and tensile were measured at ${\sigma}_7$ and ${\sigma}_{28}$. The summarized results were as follows. 1. At the ${\sigma}_7$ of 1:2 the compressive strength of the cement : briquette ash and (cement+lime) : briquette ash were 69.3% and 75.1%, respectively of the mortar made of the standard sand. At the ${\sigma}_{28}$ the strength of those materials were 56.4% and 49.0%, respectively. 2. At the ${\sigma}_7$ of 1:2 the tensile strength of the cement : briquette and (cement+lime) : briquette ash were 64.4% and 47.1%, respectively of the mortar made of standard sand. At the ${\sigma}_{28}$ the tensile strength of those materials were 69.6% and 64.8%, respectively. 3. At the ${\sigma}_7$ of 1:2 the bending strength of the cement : briquette ash and (cement+lime) : briquette ash were 46.3% and 65.9%, respectively of the mortar made of the standard sand. At the ${\sigma}_{28}$ the strength of those materials were 89.9% and 96.7%, respectively. 4. The increment of strength per $1^{\circ}C$ increase of curing temperature were on the average $0.92{\sim}1.75kg/cm^2$ of compressive strength, $0.12{\sim}0.16kg/cm^2$ of the tensile strength and $0.21{\sim}0.38kg/cm^2$ of the bending strength.
