This study was focused on the reactivity of furnace slag against cadmium to design the vertical drain method with reactive column for improving contaminated sea shore sediment. The kinetic sorption test was performed by changing the initial concentration and pH. Using pseudo-second-order model, the reactivity of furnace slag was quantitatively analyzed. Equilibrium removal amount ($q_e$) of furnace slag increased and rate constant ($k_2$) decreased with the increase of initial cadmium concentration. With the increase of pH, the equilibrium removal amount ($q_e$) and rate constant ($k_2$) increased in the same initial concentration. Required retention time was related to the inverse of the product of the equilibrium removal amount ($q_e$) multiplied by rate constant ($k_2$). The required retention time could be used to design the length of reactive column.

This study deals with the conventional consolidation methods like preloading and vertical drains. For it, Two different mechanism, i.e., increasing of permeability and evaporating of pore water were studied. The marine clays excavated in Incheon were heated at low temperature($90^{\circ}C$) to increase the permeability. Also, Microwave oven and high-temperature electric heater were used for pore water evaporation. Several points raised from the experiments. To fix them, the electric heating system was revised to upgrade the field application and drain efficiency of pore water, and the marine clays were heated by revised electric heater at high temperature($250^{\circ}C$). From Experimental result showed that results, high-temperature heater induced the pore water evaporation and displayed the excellent consolidation behavior. In addition, the cone index of heated clays were increased about 19 times, which suggested that electric heating system could be applied for ensuring the trafficability of heavy equipments.
The problems of bearing capacity, settlement and shear deformation occur when constructing a structure such as harbor, airport and bridge on soft ground of marine clay, silty clay or sandy soil. Various ground improvement methods are applied to obtain preceding settlement of soft ground and strength increase. In this study, to analyze the applicability of PBD method in deep soft ground, the compound drainage capacity test was operated in comparison with SD. As a result of the test, a minimum drainage capacity of drain material was estimated to be more than $10\;cm^3/sec$ at a more than $400\;kN/m^2$ and less than $5\;cm^3/sec$ at a more than $500\;kN/m^2$ confining pressure in case of single core PBD. In case of double core PBD, it was estimated to be more than $10\;cm^3/sec$ at a more than $500\;kN/m^2$ confining pressure.

The permeability of converter slag, replacing material of sand mat on improving soft clay foundation, was evaluated in the laboratory. The effects of grain size, flow water time and aging were investigated using sea and fresh water. Converter slag being submerged with fresh water, the coefficients of permeability in A and B samples less than 10mm grain sizes were measured as 6.52${\times}$10$\^$-2/cm/sec and 5.99${\times}$10$\^$-1/cm/sec, while changed as 1.88${\times}$10$\^$-2/cm/sec, 3.86${\times}$10$\^$-1/cm/sec under sea water condition. Also, the condition of turbulent flow may exit and was experimentally identified from the relationship between hydraulic gradient and seepage velocity. After 180 days on using sea water, the coefficients of permeability of sample A and B samples decreased ten times smaller than those initial values. And after that time continually decreased as for till 360 days. The reduction of permeability coefficient was considered to influence filled with voids in high-calcium quicklime(CaO). However, in-situ coefficient of permeability was practically satisfactory.

In this study, the in-situ model test has been conducted and used to estimate and analyze consolidation behavior of the ground by using the miniature test that reconstructs economically geotechnical behavior of in-situ full scale structure. To analogize the relation among effective stress, void ratio and coefficient of permeability at the self-weight consolidation stage, the low stress seepage consolidation test has been conducted and the involution function of constitutive equation had been obtained from the result of the curve fitted seepage consolidation test result. As a result of the numerical analysis that had been conducted on the representative section using a constitute equation, final settlement was similar with those of self-weight consolidation of the centrifugal model test. But, it was more or less smaller. It seems that these trends are caused by the difference between estimated values.
In this paper, a series of laboratory chamber tests were performed to evaluate the effects of clays mixed into compaction piles due to confining stress of ground on consolidation promoting. For the tests, various compaction piles such as SCP, GCP, and RAPP (Recycled-Aggregate Porous concrete Pile) were used. The ground condition was simulated at 50% and 100% of degree of consolidation. Also, confining stresses were applied to the composite ground corresponding to those of 5m depth. The amount of mixed clays into each compaction pile were estimated by measuring the drainage from the saturated compaction piles. From the test result, it was shown that the drainage area of compaction pile was changing according to the consolidation condition. GCP showed the most change of drainage area as it has relatively large void ratio; however, the amount of change was decreased by progressing consolidation of ground.
Suction drain method can directly apply vacuum pressure to the soft ground through vertical drains so it can make hardening zones around them. These hardening zones make steeply lower the discharge efficiency of the pore water with decreasing permeability. This paper considered a stepped vacuum pressure to minimize a hardening zone which is one of the important parameters that can decrease discharge efficiency. A series of laboratory tests were conducted in order to examine the effect of the hardening zones and to evaluate their effects to the ground improvements with varying durations which applied stepped vacuum pressures(-20kPa, -40kPa, -60kPa and -80kPa) with Busan marine clay. According to strength(CPT), water content test and theoretical investigation indicate a size of the hardening zone within 7cm and the decreasing ratio of permeability about 2.0~4.0. Also, the total settlements are larger for the stepped vacuum pressure than the instant vacuum loading. The application time with vacuum pressure is determined considering the geotechnical properties of the interested clays. Results of numerical analysis show that consolidation behavior is appropriate to measurement for considering hardening zones.
Recently, the case to construct the structure on the soft clayey ground has increased and in order to the reduction of the cost of construction and maintenance on the social infrastructure facilities we have been trying to improve the soft clayey ground using the existing methods such as the pre-loading method and the vertical drain method. Like this, when various ground improvement methods are applied on the soft clayey ground, a long-term consolidation settlement will be key issue due to low permeability coefficient of cohesive soil. According to existing research results that relate to the consolidation settlement, the loading periods for existing the standard consolidation test (Oedometer test) to obtain the consolidation parameters are needed for minimum ten days or more. Therefore, in this study, the standard consolidation test (24 hours step-loading) and constant strain rate consolidation test changed by strain rate was performed using the remolded marine clay on Gwangyang bay composed of a soft clayey ground of the south-west coast. From the laboratory test results, the characteristics of compression, strain-effective stress relations by constant strain rate and the variation characteristic of the pore water pressure by different of loading speed and the relation between consolidation parameters and constant strain rate are compared and analyzed.

For a massive project related to building national industrial complexes on a soft ground applied to PVD after dredging and hydraulic fill, laboratory tests were carried out using undisturbed sample taken from various depth. Piezocone penetration and dissipation tests were carried out to assess horizontal coefficient of consolidation and initial stress in field. The ground consists of upper dredged fill and lower original clay layer having both similar marine clays. It should be, however, considered as multi-layered soft ground having different initial void ratio, initial water content, initial effective stress, and permeability and compressibility with directions. To assess initial stress of those soft layers in which have different stress history related to consolidation, CPTu test results, especially excess pore water pressure, were analyzed. It allows to find out distribution of excess pore water pressure and initial stress inner original clay layer.
