Recently, as the magnitude and frequency of earthquakes increases, research is needed to increase the ductility of the columns in order to prevent the collapse of structures. In this study, to evaluate the performance of columns reinforced with continuous transverse reinforcing bars, the FE model for the dynamic analysis of structures reinforced with continuous transverse reinforcing bars for circular and rectangular columns is to be verified using the results of uniaxial compression experiments in the previous study. As a result, the experimental value of the column reinforced with continuous transverse reinforcement and the result value related to the dynamic analysis showed similar behavior, and the reliability was high. As a result of the analysis, the usability of the rectangular column reinforced with continuous lateral reinforcing bars was confirmed because the dissipated energy performance of the columns reinforced with spiral reinforcing bars was higher than that of the columns reinforced with band reinforcing bars.

Recently, concerns about natural disasters such as earthquakes, tsunamis and typhoons have increased. As the magnitude and frequency of earthquakes increase, research is needed to prevent structures from collapsing due to earthquake loads. Research is needed to increase the ductility of columns to prevent the collapse of structures. In this study, the ductility improvement of square columns achieved by applying spiral stirrups to square columns. Square columns reinforced with spiral stirrups are more resistant to repetitive loads such as seismic loads than columns reinforced with tie stirrups. Also, the spiral stirrups can apply better confinement to the concrete. In this study, an uniaxial compression test was conducted to evaluate the performance of columns reinforced with spiral stirrups. The results showed that the columns reinforced with spiral stirrups in both the circular and square columns showed higher compressive strength than the columns reinforced with the tie stirrups. In addition, the columns reinforced with spiral stirrups for both the square and circle columns, showed a tendency to endure the load even after the initial cracking and rebar yielding.

The panels are used as a composite part of the completed deck. They replace the main bottom transverse deck reinforcement and also serve as a form surface for the cast-in-place concrete upper layer that contains the top of deck reinforcement. Research has also demonstrated that mechanical shear ties on the top of the panels are required. In a composite deck with precast panels, it is required to notice behavior of transverse joints between panels. In this paper, static tests of composite deck with shear ties and loop joints were conducted. From the results, the validity of loop joints for continuity of deck was observed. Also, a composite behavior was abserved between precast panel and slab concrete. Tested composite decks with shear ties have 140~164% ultimate strength than have no shear ties due to the increase of composite action. Therefore, the shear ties between the slabs were sufficient to enforce composite flexural behavior to failure.

The panels are used as a composite part of the completed deck. They replace the main bottom transverse deck reinforcement and also serve as a form surface for the cast-in-place concrete upper layer that contains the top of deck reinforcement. In this paper, three types of the detail for joints was selected and their structural performance in terms of strength and crack contral was investigated through static tests on composite beams. Form the results, the validity of loop joints for continuity of half-depth precast deck was observed and especially an overlapping length of loop joint and transverse reinforcement were checked. The results suggest that increasing the loop overlapping length increases the flexural strength of half-depth precast deck with loop joints. In terms of crack contral, the loop joint with transverse reinforcement showed better performance.

As the half-depth precast concrete decks are increasingly applied to the construction sites, researches on connection details have been increased. For design of concrete bridge deck with half-depth precast panels, it is required to provide appropriate details of transverse loop joints between panels. In this paper, the structural performance of precast decks was evaluated to investigate continuity of the proposed loop joint details. From the results, the validity of the joints for the continuity of deck was observed in the aspect of flexural strength and crack control. The ultimate strength increased 1.52 times as the reinforcement spacing in the joint was reduced. In terms of crack control, direct crack width calculation for the loop joint showed appropriate results comparing with measured crack width.
Precast reinforced concrete bridge columns with hollow rectangular section were tested under cyclic lateral load with constant axial force to investigate its seismic performance. After all the precast column segments were erected, longitudinal reinforcement was inserted in the sheath prefabricated in the segments, which were then mortar grouted. Main variables of the test series were column aspect ratio, longitudinal reinforcement ratio, amount of lateral reinforcement, and location of segment joints. The aspect ratios were 4.5 and 2.5, and the longitudinal steel ratios were 1.15% and 3.07%. The amount of lateral reinforcement were 95%, 55%, 50%, and 27% of the minimum amount for full ductility design requirements in the Korean Bridge Design Code. The locations of segment joints in plastic hinge region were 0.5 and 1.0 times of the section depth from the bottom column end. The test results of cracking and failure mode, axial-flexural strength, lateral load-displacement relationship, and displacement ductility are presented. Then, safety of the ductility demand based seismic design in the Korean Bridge Design Code is discussed. The column specimens showed larger ductility than expected, because buckling of longitudinal reinforcing bar was prevented due to confinement developed not only by transverse steel but also by sheath and infilling mortar.
The objective of this study was to investigate features of transverse crack occurrence and propagation in continuously reinforced concrete pavement(CRCP) when subjected to environmental loading. The finite element model of CRCP was developed and the element removal method was implemented to predict the crack propagation process. To investigate the effect of the type of environmental loading on the CRCP behavior and cracking aspects, the following three different cases were considered: (1) the temperature gradient between top and bottom of the slab does not vary and the constant temperature drop throughout the depth occurs; (2) the temperature at the slab bottom does not vary and the temperature gradient increases; and (3) the temperature between the mid-depth and the bottom of the slab is the same and does not vary and the temperature at the top decreases. The analysis results showed that the crack occurrence and propagation through the depth of the slab in CRCP were significantly affected by the type of environmental loading. The changes in stress distribution and displacements during the crack occurrence and propagation process could also be investigated.

Scale model tests were performed to investigate the seismic behavior and capacity of reinforced concrete piers that were not detailed for seismic load. The prototype pier is of solid circular section. Additional lateral reinforcing bars were not provided that might be required for the confinement. Two kinds of reinforcement details are considered for the vertical longitudinal reinforcing bars: lap spliced and continuous. In the case of lap spliced model all the longitudinal bars were lap spliced at the same height in the bottom plastic hinge zone. Three specimens were constructed and subjected to quasi-static cyclic lateral loading while the vertical load held constant. Non-ductile failure modes were observed in the test of lap spliced models but limited ductile behavior was observed in the test of a continuous longitudinal reinforcement model.
Transverse cracks in continuously reinforced concrete pavement (CRCP) occur at early ages due to temperature and moisture variations. The width and spacing of transverse cracks have a significant effect on pavement performance such as load transfer efficiency and punchout development. Also, crack widths in CRCP depend on 'zero-stress temperature,' which is defined as a temperature where initial concrete stresses become zero, as well as drying shrinkage of concrete. For good long-term performance of CRCP, transverse cracks need to be kept tight. To keep the crack widths tight throughout the pavement life, zero-stress temperature must be as low as practically possible. Thus, temperature control at early ages is a key component In ensuring good CRCP performance. In this study, concrete temperatures were predicted using PavePro, a concrete temperature prediction program, for a CRCP construction project, and those values were compared with actual measured temperatures obtained from field testing. The cracks were also surveyed for 12 days after concrete placement. Findings from this study can be summarized as follows. First, the actual maximum temperatures are greater than the predicted maximum temperature in the ranges of 0.2 to 4.5$^{\circ}C$. For accurate temperature predictions, hydration properties of cementitious materials such as activation energy and adiabatic constants, should be evaluated and accurate values be obtained for use as input values. Second, within 24 hours of concrete placement, temperatures of concrete placed in the morning are higher than those placed in the afternoon, and the maximum concrete temperature occurred in the concrete placed at noon. Finally, from the 12 days of condition survey, it was noted that the rate of crack occurrence in the morning placed section was 25 percent greater than that in the afternoon placed section. Based on these findings, it is concluded that maximum concrete temperature has a significant effect on crack development, and boner concrete temperature control is needed to ensure adequate CRCP performance.
Horizontal cracks at the mid-depth of concrete slabs were observed at a section of the continuously reinforced concrete pavement(CRCP) structures on the Korea Highway Corporation's Test Road. To investigate the existence and the extent of horizontal cracks in the concrete slab, a number of cores were taken from the section of CRCP. To identify the causes of horizontal cracks, numerical analyses were conducted. Several variables relative to design, material, and environment were considered in the studies to evaluate possible causes of horizontal cracking. A numerical model of CRCP was developed using the finite element discretization, and the shear and normal tensile stress distributions in CRCP were investigated with the model. Numerical analysis results show that the maximum shear and normal tensile stresses develop near the depth of steel bars at transverse cracks. If those maximum stresses reach the strength of concrete, horizontal cracks occur. The maximum stresses become higher as the environmental loads, coefficient of thermal expansion of concrete, and elastic modulus of concrete increase.
