  • In the combustion treatment of explosive gases with a high heating value such as $H_2$ and $NH_3$ used in semiconductor and chemical processes, the heat recovery modeling and exergy analysis of the process using the Aspen Plus simulator and its thermodynamic data were performed to examine the recovery of high temperature thermal energy. The heat recovery process was analyzed through this process modeling while the exergy results clearly confirmed that the rigorous reaction mainly occurs in the condenser and the chamber. In addition, the process modeling demonstrated that approximately 95% of the exergy is destructed on the basis of the exergies injected and the exergy being exhausted. Using the exergy technique, which can quantitatively analyze the energy, we could understand the energy flow in the process and confirm that our heat recovery process was efficiently designed.

  • For understanding of high performance liquid rocket engine operating at high pressure, dynamic characteristics of liquid oxygen in a swirl injector operating at supercritical conditions has been numerically investigated. Turbulent numerical model is based on large eddy simulation and contains full conservation laws including Soave modification of Redlich-Kwong equation of state and Chung's model. Preconditioning method is applied to get an effective convergence rate. Numerical analysis results are compared with the one that ideal equation of state applied to. Differences of thermodynamic properties and mixing dynamics are investigated at liquid phase area inside injector and combustion chamber.

  • Various sizes of hydrazine monopropellant thruster have been used on satellite and space launcher vehicle. The test and handling procedure of hydrazine monopropellant thruster are usually difficult because of the toxicity of hydrazine and its decomposition product gases. Therefore, the numerical analysis can help understand the effects of various design parameters and can reduce the time as well as expenses. In this study, the numerical analysis is performed by modelling the catalyst bed as one dimensional porous medium. Thereby, resulting physical phenomena are examined by considering the variation of catalyst bed characteristics incurred by catalyst granule failure.

  • This paper deals with an optimal output tracking control for open-cycle liquid propellant rocket engine. For this purpose, we modeled simplified mathematical model of open-cycle liquid propellant rocket engine and designed optimal output feedback control system using combustion chamber pressure. For design the closed-loop system of open-cycle liquid propellant rocket engine, we designed optimal output feedback linear quadratic tracking control system using the linearized model and demonstrated the performance of the controller through numerical simulation.

  • Recently, global warming and environmental pollution are becoming more important, and fuel economy is becoming important. Each automobile company is actively developing various new technologies to increase fuel efficiency. CVVD(Continuously Variable Valve Duration) system means a device that continuously changes the rotational speed of the camshaft to change the valve duration according to the state of the engine. In this paper, VVT(Variable Valve Timing) and CVVD were applied to a single-cylinder diesel engine, and the characteristics of intake and exhaust flow rate and in-cylinder pressure characteristics were analyzed by numerical analysis. In order to analyze the effect of CVVD on the actual engine operation, the study was performed by setting the valve control and injection pressure as variables in two sections of the engine operating region. As a result, In the case of applying CVVD, the positive overlap with the exhaust valve is maintained, thus it is possible to secure the flow smoothness of air and increase the volumetric efficiency by improving the flow rate. The section 2 condition showed the highest peak pressure, but the pressure rise rate was similar to that of the VVT 20 and CVCD 20 conditions up to 40 bar due to the occurrence of ignition delay.

  • This study presents analysis of fire hazard of electrical heating pad. In order to analyze fire hazard fire experimental and flammability experiment is conducted. The fire experiment is conducted to simulate normal condition and abnormal condition such as breakdown of thermostat. Vertical burning test(UL 94) is conducted for the fire retardant experiment. Kinds of electric heating pad used for experiment are electric mat, fabric pad, vinyl pad. The results show that fire hazard is high in case of breakdown of thermostat with the rating voltage supply. And Material of electric heating pad has not fire retardant performance.

  • An increase in EGR rate can reduce NOx emissions. On the other hand, an excessive EGR rate is a major cause of incomplete combustion. Precise position control of the EGR valve that is optimized for the operating conditions of the engine should be supported to meet the strict emission regulations. Accordingly, this study performed mathematical modeling and control theory for characteristic analysis of an EGR valve motor. Because it is a step for controlling the position of the EGR valve motor using the Microchip development tool, this study analyzed the characteristics of the motor for each opening and closing section according to the input value of the duty ratio of PWM (Pulse Width Modulation).

  • Most researches for impinging jet spray have been focused on under-standing the breakup mechanism of a liquid sheet formed by the collision of jets and modeling the spray breakup using experimental data. For this reason, there have been few studies on the characteristics of the spatial spray distribution which affects significantly the combustion efficiency. Hence, we measured the radial distribution of fuel massflux using a like-doublet type injector. Instead of PDPA(Phase Doppler Particle Analyzer) which has been used only for the point measurement of the drop size of spray, PLIF(Planar Laser Induced Fluorescence) technique was developed lot the 2-D measurement of the massflux distribution of spray Indirect photography technique was also used to verify PLIF data.

  • When many space launchers and rockets need to be separated, the pyrotechnic separators have been widely used because of their high reliability and high energy generation. However, intensive pyroshock and debris from the high-explosive type separator may cause fatal damage to the equipment inside of the space launchers or rockets. To solve this problem, a pressure-cartridge type low-impact separator has been developed. In this study, one of the low-impact separators, the split-type pyrolock, was used. We established a mathematical model for the split-type pyrolock that simulates the state of combustion gas and the separation behavior of four independent internal components and verified the mathematical model through comparing with experiment results.

  • A numerical study was undertaken to clarify the mechanisms of heat transfer in fluid-particle suspension flows. Such flows, including fluidization, are of considerable industrial importance. The present study uses 2-D numerical computations of collisions of normal incidence between a particle and a wall. By comparing the results using (a) adiabatic boundary conditions on the particle and (b) uniform, elevated temperature conditions on the particle, the contributions of fluid-mediated conduction and particle induced convection were successfully separated. Computational expedience led to the use of a transient conduction thermal layer as the background thermal field for the analysis. The results shows that the effect of particle movement is very small until the particle reaches a distance of one to one half diameter away from the wall. The gas-mediated conduction effect is dominant over the induced gas convection effect when Pe is small and the induced gas convection effect becomes significant as Pe increases.
