• In this study, the effect of chemical additives on the reduction of fine particles was identified in $9.2MW_e$ commercial scale circulating fluidized bed boiler firing bituminous coal. Futhermore, a simple and effective method of fine particle collection has been developed to collect the fine particles of the boiler during fossil fuel combustion. Chemical additives were used to reduce particles below 10 PM in the flue gas, and borax solution was used as a chemical additive. In order to identify the particle behavior of PM 10 or less among the collected fine particles, it was analyzed through particle size analyzer and SEM analysis. The Borax solution tends to absorb molten mineral in the flue gas and make fine particles grow. As a result, it was analyzed that particles smaller than $10{\mu}m$ were reduced by using borax solution.

  • Ships are capable of operating on residual fuel oil. Recently, various attempts have been made to meet environmental regulations and with ships operating on residual fuel oil. One way of fulfilling these requirements is by using fuel additives. Dispersants and fuel combustion improvers will have a positive effect on improving the combustion characteristics of the residual fuel oil. As such, this study examines fuel oils blended with additives by using fuel combustion analysis (FIA/FCA) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The results of FIA/FCA focuse only on the amount of work done by the fuel oil. Therefore, it is recommended in this study that a new method to evaluate the combustion efficiency via FIA/FCA processes be developed. The analysis with ROHR curve gained by FIA/FCA brought similar results with pressure trace curve therefore it can be said that new analysis method can be reliable. The TGA, analysis process is very sensitive to the evaporation of fuel, for example, which could be addressed. In the performance-related findings of this study, blended samples with additives containing iron compounds showed a greater improvement in early combustion characteristics than samples without additives.

  • In an effort to reduce the onset of global warming, the International Maritime Organization Marine Environment Protection Committee (IMO MEPC) proposed the reduction in ship speeds as a way of lowering the proportion of carbon dioxide ($CO_2$) in the Green House Gas emissions from ships. To minimize fuel costs, shipping companies have already been performing slow steaming for their own fleets. Specifically, the slow steaming approach has been adopted for most ocean-going container lines. In addition, because of the increased marine fuel cost that is required to enable increased capacity, there is an urgent need for more advanced fuel-saving technologies. Therefore, in this present study, we propose a fuel-cost reduction method that can improve the performance of diesel engines. We introduce a predetermined amount (0.025% of the amount of fuel used) of fuel additive (oil-soluble calcium-based organometallic compound). For improved experimental accuracy, as the test subjects, we utilize a large two-stroke diesel engine installed in land plants. The loads of the test engine were classified as low, medium, and high (50, 75, and 100%, respectively). We compare the engine performance parameters (power output, fuel consumption rate, p-max, and exhaust temperature) before and after the addition of fuel additives. Our experimental results, confirmed that we can realize fuel-cost savings of at least 2% by adding the fuel additive in low load conditions (50%). Likewise, the maximum combustion pressure was found to have increased. On the other hand, we observed that there was a reduction in the exhaust temperature.

  • This study attempted to derive the possibility of using wood pellet using rice husk, which is an agricultural byproduct, and tried to improve the lower calorific value of rice hulls thorough expansion technology and combustion additives. In the physical and chemical analysis of rice husk, the result was obtained that the chlorine content was 0.09%, which did not meet the wood pellet quality standard of Korea. When making rice hulls into expanded rice husk through the expansion technology, the chlorine content decreased, resulting in a product of 0.02%, which is equivalent to the wood pellet standard of Korea, and the calorific value was also increased to 4,280 kcal/kg compared to the existing 3,780 kcal/kg. To obtain a product of 5,000 kcal/kg or more, borax, hydrogen peroxide, and sodium hydroxide was used as combustion improver. However the improvement in calorific value was insufficient. After conversion to coffee oil path using coffee grounds, which is a waste resource biomass, it is mixed into an expanded rice husk, and when the product is analyzed, the coffee oil 15 wt% mixed product shows an excess of 4,949 kcal/kg. When using rice husk, an agricultural byproduct, as wood pellets, it is considered desirable to use waste resources to improve the calorific value, and according to the results of this study, when mixing coffee oil, rice husk can be sufficiently used as wooden pellets.

  • The optimum regeneration conditions for the regeneration of three way spent catalysts (TWCs), which were taken from automobiles with different driving conditions, were investigated to evaluate the suitability as alternative catalysts for removing VOCs. The spent catalysts were washed with five different acids ($HNO_3$, $H_2SO_4$, $C_2H_2O_4$, $C_6H_8O_7$, and $H_3PO_4$) to remove contaminants and examine the optimum conditions for recovering the catalytic activity. The physicochemical properties of spent and its regenerated TWCs were evaluated by using nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms, XRD, and ICP. The relative atomic ratios of contaminants and platinum group metals (PGMs) of the spent TWCs were greatly dependent on the placed positions. The main contaminants formed were lubricant oil additives and metallic components. Also, the regeneration treatment increased the PGMs ratio, BET surface area, and average pore diameter of TWCs. The catalytic activity results indicated that the spent TWCs have the possibility for removing VOCs. Moreover, the employed acid treatments greatly enhanced the catalytic activity of the spent TWCs. Especially, nitric and oxalic acids provided the most improvement in the catalytic behavior. The catalytic activities of the regenerated TWCs were significantly influenced by the containing platinum ratios rather than the removal ratios of contaminants and the changes in the structural properties offered by the acid treatments.
