  • To eliminate the onset of combustion instabilities and develop effective approaches for control, flame structure is very important. In this study, we conducted experiments under various operating conditions with a model gas turbine combustor to examine the relation of combustion instability and flame structure by OH chemiluminescence and laser diagnostics of He-Ne laser absorbtion system. The swirling LNG($CH_4$)/air flame was investigated with overall equivalence ratio of 1.2 and dump plane fuel-air mixture velocity 25 ~ 70 m/s. We founded that the combustion instability phenomenon occurs at lower mixing velocity and higher mixing velocity conditions. We also concluded that fluid dynamical vortex frequency has major effects on the combustion instability characteristics at lower mixing velocity condition.

  • In this study, the combustion instability characteristics according to the change in the hydrogen ratio in the fuel in the single nozzle system of the hydrogen-natural gas mixed gas turbine for power generation was analyzed using a three-dimensional finite element analysis-based Helmholtz solver. This combustor shows the instability characteristics in which mode transition occurs from a mode having a low amplitude near 70 Hz to a mode having a high amplitude of 250 Hz or higher as the hydrogen fraction in the fuel increases. The current modeling results are found to reasonably predict the main characteristics of the change in measured instability frequency and growth rate with the change in fuel composition.

  • Digital control system for active combustion control of lab-scale combustor equipped with secondary fuel injection is designed. Controllability with adaptive law is revealed with the Cambridge Combustor model and the requirement for control system is derived. The input and output requirements of frequency estimator and fuel supply actuator for the adaptive control law is verified with cold tests. The system can be used as digital based active combustion controller having 150Hz combustion instability.

  • Paraffin wax is attracting many attentions for promising solid fuel of hybrid rocket because of its higher regression than other fuels. However, even with paraffin fuel combustion, unsteady low-frequency oscillation of combustion pressure is still observed. And, this is related to the formation of liquid layer and the entrainment of fuel droplets entering the axial combustion gas flow. This study investigates the effect of additional combustion of fuel droplets on the occurrence of low-frequency combustion instability. On the other hand, the formation of fuel droplets depends on Weber Number (the ratio of the inertial force to the surface tension of the liquid) and Reynolds Number of the oxidizer flow. Therefore, a laboratory-scale hybrid rocket was used to monitor the occurrence of combustion instability while changing We number. A series of combustion tests were conducted to control We number by changing the oxidizer flow rate or adding LDPE (low density polyethylene) to base fuel. In the results, it was confirmed that there is a critical We number above which the low-frequency combustion instability occurs.

  • The results of combustion performance test of fuel-rich gas generator with dual swirl injectors are described. By changing simulating duct and recess number(RN) of the injectors, we inspected whether the combustion instability took place. When the injectors of RN = 0.5 were used, combustion instabilities could be reduced using the simulating duct. However, the effect of the simulating duct on the gas generator with the injectors of RN = 1.5 was not significant.

  • The effects of $CO_2$-dilution on combustion instability were studied in order to apply biogas in a dual lean premixed gas turbine combustor on a real-scale dual lean premixed burner head which is originally developed for Natural Gas fuel. Combustion instability is reduced by $CO_2$ dilution effect according to the result of dynamic pressure signal and phase-resolved $OH^*$ images. The reason for this is that dilution of $CO_2$ reduces heat release perturbation and increases flame volume due to reduction of the flame speed and expansion of flame surface.

  • Combustion instability is a major issue in design of gas turbine combustors for efficient operation with low emissions. Combustion instability is induced by the interaction of the unsteady heat release of the combustion process and the change in the acoustic pressure in the combustion chamber. In an effort to develop a technique to predict self-excited combustion instability of gas turbine combustors, a new stability analysis method based on the transfer matrix method is developed. The method views the combustion system as a one-dimensional acoustic system with a side branch and describes the heat source as the input to the system. This approach makes it possible to use not only the advantages of the transfer matrix method but also well established classic control theories. The approach is applied to a gas turbine combustion system, which shows the validity and effectiveness of the approach.

  • A Possibility of combustion instability on longitudinal mode has a high level at large scale of L/D. Solid propellant has a metal particle and a grain of control to pressure oscillation. Solid rocket motor in slotted-tube grain controls pressure oscillation of longitudinal mode. Slotted-tube grain restrains longitudinal 1st pressure oscillation. But cavity volume of aft. insulation ablation amplifies 2nd pressure o scillation by vortext shedding. A study has suppressed combustion instability and vortex shedding by modified 4 slotted tube solid rocket motor design.
