• In this study, thermoacoustic analysis model was developed in order to predict both eigenfrequencies and initial growth rate of combustion instabilities for lean premixed gas turbine combustors. As a first step, a model combustor and nozzle were selected and analytical linear equations for thermoacoustic waves were derived for a given combustion system. Then, methods showing how the equations can be used for analysis of the combustion instability were suggested. It was found that the prediction results showed a good agreement with the measurements. However, there were some limitation in growth rate predictions, which were related with over-simplification of flame structure, acoustic boundary conditions, and temperature distribution in the combustor.

  • Detonative combustion is considered as a promising combustion mechanism for improving thermodynamic efficiency of power generation systems as a PGC, as well as high-speed propulsion systems. Among the various types of detonative combustion, RDE is fascinated by many researchers because of the simplicity and continuos operation characteristics. Present paper is an introduction to the physical and operational concept of RDE with a brief history of RDE researches and recent development activities. Additional discussions will devoted to the relevance to the tangential mode instabilities in liquid rocket engines and improvement of liquid rocket performance.

  • The knowledge of flame structure is essential for control of combustion instability phenomena. Some results of an experimental study on mechanism of naturally occurring combustion oscillations with a single dominant frequency are presented. Tests were conducted in a laboratory-scale dump combustor at atmospheric pressure. Sound level meter was used to track the pressure wave inside the combustor. The observed instability was a longitudinal mode with a frequency of $\sim341.8Hz$. Instability map was obtained at the condition of inlet temperature of $360^{\circ}C$, mean velocities of $8.5\sim10.8m/s$ and well premixed mixture. It showed that combustion instability was susceptible to occur in the lean conditions. In this study, unstable flame was observed from stoichiometric to 0.7 in overall equivalence ratio. At selected unstable conditions, phase-resolved OH chemiluminescence images were captured to investigate flame structure with various mean velocities. As mean velocity is increased, the flame grows and global heat release was changed. Due to these effects, combustion instability can be maintained at more lean air-fuel ratio. Also, these results give an insight to the controlling mechanism for an increasing heat release at maximum pressure.

  • In this paper, the typical combustion instabilities in hybrid rocket were studied. To induce combustion instabilities in the combustor with the diaphragms were mounted, on front and rear of the fuel, and combustion experiments were performed. The calculated theoretical frequencies using Longitudinal Acoustic Mode and Helmholtz Mode are compared with experimental frequencies using FFT analysis. The theoretical calculated results showed good agreements with experimental results are compared.

  • As a evaluation method of combustion stability in a liquid rocket engine thrust chamber, external disturbance devices are used. In the paper, the study on pulse-gun ignition tests for a combustion stability rating test of a thrust chamber was performed. Charging volume of pulse-guns was determined by confirming the intensities of the pressure waves from the ignition tests in the cold-flow conditions. While using same injector head, combustion instabilities were not encountered during 14 hot-firing tests without pulse-guns but combustion instabilities were triggered by pulse-gun ignition during 2 hot-firing tests. The results showed that the pulse-gun ignition test could be the evaluation method and could reduce the hot-firing test number for the stability rating of a thrust chamber.

  • The atomizing characteristics in a spray injected from a twin fluid atomization nozzle have been investigated. The Sauter mean diameters as mean diameter are compared with wavelength calculated from the instability theory. The Sauter mean diameter are measured by the Fraunhofer diffraction theory using the Malvern particle sizer. The wavelength is calculated using the mean relative velocity instead of the exit relative velocity of nozzle. Also shadowgraphy technique is used to visualize atomization phenomena. This paper gives a possibility that the mean diameter can be predicted with the wavelength obtained by the simple instability theory.

  • A Helmholtz resonator is applied to control high frequency combustion instability in liquid rocket engine. Damping characteristics of the Helmholtz resonator are investigated by the flow characteristic and its design. To simulate combustion instability, resonance in a test section(with fixed volume) is made by a pressure pulsator, and then damping characteristics are investigated. Its orifice length and diameter are selected as the design parameters and flow rates are varied to reveal the effect on damping characteristics. The experimental results show that a Helmholtz resonator is also working with flows. When length and diameter of an orifice are small, the tuning frequency increases as the flow velocity increases.

  • The goal of this study is to find flame dynamic behavior using a transverse fuel injection in a model combustor, and is to investigate main causes of unstable combustion in a liquid-fueled combustor. For transverse fuel injection into air cross flow, spray result shows similar tendency with Wu et al.[1998] until spray arrives at flame-holder. However, passing through flame-holder, fuel inflow into recirculation region of flameholder is not sufficient so it makes large difference between shear flame and recirculation flame behind flameholder. In combustion tests, the stable flame shows a kind of shear flames and low peaks of dynamic pressure frequencies. On the other hand, unstable flame shows periodic detached flame in recirculation zone and a strong peak of dynamic pressure frequency. The instability frequency is highly affected by influx air velocity, air temperature, equivalence ratio and wake or vortex shedding frequency behind the flameholder.

  • It is critical to assess the characteristics of flame response to pressure perturbations for the understanding of nonlinear combustion instabilities. Previous studies can be grouped into flame response upon perturbed, fresh air and fuel mixture, and flame response directly perturbed from longitudinal waves. The present study presents experimental methodology for the understanding of the flame response exposed to transverse acoustic waves generated by loud speakers.
