Design Point Operating Characteristics of an Oxidizer Rich Preburner (산화제 과잉 예연소기 설계점 운영 특성)

  • It was designed and tested at the design point that an oxidizer rich preburner for a staged combustion liquid rocket engine propelled by kerosene and LOx. The oxidizer rich preburner was designed as some of LOx injected from the mixing head was burned with kerosene and the rest of LOx injected from injection holes in the regenerative cooling chamber was vaporized by combustion gas. The preburner is operated at OF ratio of 60 and combustion pressure of 20 MPa. The Preburner has a honey-comb type mixing head with simplex swirl injectors, a turbulence ring improving combustion stability and uniformity of product gas temperature distribution, and a nozzle simulating the duct. With the combustion test results at the design point, the oxidizer rich preburner showed high combustion stability and uniformity of product gas temperature distribution.

  • Effects of combustion chamber design on combustion stability characteristics of a full-scale gas generator were studied experimentally. Thirty seven double-swirl injectors with recess number of 1.5 were distributed in the injector head, which significantly influences combustion performance. The characteristics of combustion stability were inspected by the parametric variations such as changing length and diameter of the combustion chamber and installing a turbulence ring. The experimental result shows that as the effective length of the combustion chamber decreased, an instability frequency took place in a high-frequency region, and the amplitude of the dynamic pressure generally diminished and could be reduced to the unharmful level. However, the dynamic pressure fluctuation in the region of longitudinal resonant frequency could not be suppressed perfectly.

  • Effects of injector or design on combustion characteristics of full-scale gas generators were studied. Three full-scale gas generators, which have same total mass flow rate but mass flow rate per injector is different depending on their designs, were manufactured. Thirteen, nineteen and thirty seven injectors, which have internal-mixing and double-swirl characteristics, are distributed in injector heads, respectively. The results showed that special pressure fluctuations in the gas generators with 13 and 19 injectors didn't appear around longitudinal resonant frequency, but small longitudinal-mode instability appeared in the gas generator with 37 injectors. As the number of injectors installed in injector heads increased, temperature distribution in combustion chambers showed small deviations, but the damage of LOx posts increased.

  • This study is the performance test of the vitiated air heater with high temperature and high pressure. The vitiated air heater to provide hot air about 2000 K was designed, and the performance test is carrying out. The designed vitiated air heater uses methane, oxygen, and mixing air by working gases, and uses mixing air for cooling of the bottom of a mixing head. By this reason, the vitiated ar heater has to be designed with heat-resistance from hot frame, and to be tested for its proof. In this paper the performance of he vitiated air heater is analyzed to some test results.

  • The overall results of hot firing tests of fuel-rich gas generator with impinging injector at design and off-design points are described. The gas generator consists of an injector head with impinging injector, a water cooled combustor wall, a turbulence ring to enhance mixing, an instrument ring measuring temperature and pressure and a nozzle. The combustion tests were successfully performed without damage of gas generator. Test results show that the outlet temperature is not dependent on residence time of hot gas within 4~6msec but dependent on chamber pressure. The relation between outlet temperature and combustion efficiency resulting from measured pressure, mass flow rate and area of nozzle throat is shown. The overall O/F ratio is the critical parameter to determine the outlet temperature and the linear correlation between two parameters is established.

  • The effects of $CO_2$-dilution on combustion instability were studied in order to apply biogas in a dual lean premixed gas turbine combustor on a real-scale dual lean premixed burner head which is originally developed for Natural Gas fuel. Combustion instability is reduced by $CO_2$ dilution effect according to the result of dynamic pressure signal and phase-resolved $OH^*$ images. The reason for this is that dilution of $CO_2$ reduces heat release perturbation and increases flame volume due to reduction of the flame speed and expansion of flame surface.

  • Hot-firing tests were carried out using a mixing head with 19 swirl coaxial injectors and a combustion chamber with internal cooling channels. The propellants of liquid oxygen and kerosene(Jet A-1) were burned in a range of chamber pressures (59~82 bar) and mixture ratios (2.0~3.0). The temperature of water used as the cooling fluid was measured at the inlet and outlet of the cooling channels, and the heat flux was calculated. The aim of this study was to examine the effect of combustion instability on heat transfer in a subscale thrust chamber, and detect the temperature variation of cooling water. During several hot-firing tests, combustion instability was encountered which caused a 5~20% increase in heat flux. The peak heat flux took place in the initial stages of combustion instability.

  • 점차 엄격해지는 요구조건을 만족시켜 주기 위해서는 승용차용 엔진의 실제특성과 운전특성을 지 배하는 설계변수의 조절은 불가피하며, 그중에서도 엔진의 핵심부인 연소질의 설계는 가장 중요 하다. 부분 부하에서의 SI기관의 연료경제성을 향상시키는 가장 좋은 방법이 압축비를 상승시 키는 것이므로, 앞으로의 여소실은 고압축비에서도 옥탄가가 높은 연료를 요구하는 성향을 낮 추는 특성을 갖고 있어야 한다. 새로운 엔진의 향상을 최적화하기 위하여는 quench area의 크 기와 위치 그리고 적절한 quench distance의 성질이 중요하며, 또한 연소실의 소형화, 스파크 플러크의 위치, 표면적/체적의 비 그리고 화염전파거리등도 고려에 넣어야 한다. 승용차용 엔진의 요구조건은 연소실을 피스톤 크라운에 위치시키는 용이한 방법을 통하여 해결될 수 있으며, 이 러한 형상의 연소실은 실린더 헤드에 장치한 연소실과 비교하여 다음과 같은 장점을 갖고 있다. - 스파크 플러그 주변에 연소실을 배치하기 쉽다. - 연소실 내에 quench area의 설정이 자유롭다. - 연소실 layout의 개조없이 압축비의 설정이 자유롭다. - 연소실의 조합이 간단하다. - 실린더벽으로의 열손실이 감소되어 열효율이 증대된다. - 공연비의 희박가능한계가 크다. - EGR성능이 향상되어 NOx 의 배출과 연료소비율이 감소된다. - 필요하다면 연소실실 또는 직접분사식 Diesel 기관으로서의 개조가 간단하다. 만약 생산단가가 크게 상승하지 않는다면, NOx의 배출과 연료소비율이 작으면서도, 비출력이 큰 4-밸브 연소실이 실용화 될 전망이다.

  • A preburner for the staged combustion in the high performance liquid rocket engine is being developed and strength experiments and finite element analyses on specimens, which simulate the brazing joint of the preburner, were performed and the results were compared. One specimen simulate the joints near oxygen injectors of head by the funance brazing and two specimens the joints of the combustion chamber cooling channel by vacuum brazing. The experiments were burst ones with strain gauges.
