  • An effective control of the axial thrust of a turbopump is one of the critical issues for obtaining its operational stability. Axial thrusts of the fuel pump for the 75-ton class rocket engine under development were measured with water as a test propellant at a room temperature. According to the test results, the axial thrust of the fuel pump seemed to satisfy the axial force condition of its bearing. Also, the thrust was increased as a whole when the flowrate of the pump was decreased. Furthermore it was found that the thrust and the leakage flowate were modified when the gaps between the floating ring seals and the impeller were changed.

  • To evaluate the hydraulic and cavitation performance of a fuel pump for a liquid rocket engine, performance tests of the pump, which consist of hydraulic tests and cavitation tests, were conducted in water environment with various condition. In the hydraulic tests, the head, efficiency and volute pressure distribution of the pump are found to follow the conventional similarity rule, whereas the secondary flow pressure shows a small deviation from the similarity rule. As the floating gap is constricted, the efficiency of the pump improves and the secondary flow pressure decreases. However, the inner diameter of bypass line orifice does not show clear relationship with the pump efficiency. In the cavitation tests, measurements of the head and the NPSH indicate that the pump shows better cavitation performance as the rotational speed of the pump increases.

  • An effective control of the axial thrust of a turbopump is one of the critical issues for its operational stability. In order to assure the stability of a turbopump-type fuel pump for a liquid rocket engine, an axial thrust measurement system was developed and a series of axial thrust tests were performed in water environment. In the tests, the axial thrust of the fuel pump at the design flowrate satisfied the axial force condition of the bearing of the pump. Also, it was found that by using orifices with different geometries in the secondary flow passage the overall axial thrust of the pump could be controlled.

  • High frequency signals are analyzed which are measured at the inlet / outlet pipeline and pump casing during cavitation tests of the fuel pump for the liquid rocket engine. RMS values of each data are shown according to the cavitation number and compared with those of the LOx pump tests and the impact of the cavitation instability is also explored. Analogies about the cavitation number are confirmed between high frequency data of both pumps. In addition, the cavitation instability is found in all the signals and has an affect on the outlet pressure pulsation of the fuel pump.

  • Solenoid diaphragm fuel pump, which to replace mechanical fuel pump system by utilizing cam-shaft driving force, is in the spotlight for being a high efficient green car component. However, there is a drawback in power consumption as a solenoid diaphragm fuel pump only relies on solenoid for its flux needed in reciprocating motion. Therefore, this research proposes permanent magnet type VCM (Voice Coil Motor) fuel pump system to minimized power consumption. Furthermore, the study compares and analyzes power consumption and dynamic performance between the current and the former solenoid diaphragm pump by conducting finite element analysis with the commercial electromagnetic solver, MAXWELL.

  • In recent years, the needs for more fuel-efficient and lower-emission vehicles have driven to use the alternative fuel of LPG(Liquefied Petroleum Gas) which is able to meet the more stringent legislations without many modifications to current engine. LPLi (Liquid Phase LPG Injection) system (the 3rd generation LPG injection system) is the core technology to produce power equivalent to a gasoline engine with less emissions. The LPG fuel pump can supply the compressed LP gas in the liquid phase to engine. The fuel filter is attached in the fuel pump to eliminate the remnants in the liquid phased LP gas and the performance of blowoff flow for a pump can be varied with various filters. In this study, experiments were conducted to investigate the performance and efficiency of the impeller type LPG fuel pump under various filter types of microfiber, double mesh and external filter. And blowoff flow for a LPG fuel pump was measured according to the temperature of the fuel.

  • Three Lox pumps and one fuel pump are manufactured for turbopump real-propellent tests and water tests of the pumps are performed in order to estimate the performance characteristics of the pumps. According to the test results, the test region(flow ratio, cavitation number) of the pumps at the water tests cover the operating region at the real-propellent tests and also all the pumps satisfy the design requirement. The head of the Lox pumps shows a 2% difference among them due to the internal geometry, but the efficiency and overall cavitation performance are almost same. It is found that the fuel pump has a similar head and efficiency compared with the previous model of the same internal geometry, while it has a little inferior cavitation performance.

  • A series of hydraulic tests of a fuel pump are performed using water at a room temperature. The pump is under development for 75-ton class liquid rocket engines of the open-loop gas generator type. According to the test results, the fuel pump satisfies its design requirement and its head and efficiency at the design flowrate are higher than the expected value by the computational analysis. Also, it is found that the pressure at the rear bearing outlet is higher than expected because the inlet of bypass pipe line is narrow. Furthermore, the flowrate of the secondary flow is estimated using the pressure difference of the elbow of the bypass pipe line.
