Rock Mechanics Site Characterization for HLW Disposal Facilities (고준위방사성폐기물 처분시설 부지에 대한 암반역학 부지특성화)

  • The mechanical and thermal properties of the rock masses can affect the performance associated with both the isolating and retarding capacities of radioactive materials within the deep geological disposal system for High-Level Radioactive Waste (HLW). In this study, the essential parameters for the site descriptive model (SDM) related to the rock mechanics and thermal properties of the HLW disposal facilities site were reviewed, and the technical background was explored through the cases of the preceding site descriptive models developed by SKB (Swedish Nuclear and Fuel Management Company), Sweden and Posiva, Finland. SKB and Posiva studied parameters essential for the investigation and evaluation of mechanical and thermal properties, and derived a rock mechanics site descriptive model for safety evaluation and construction of the HLW disposal facilities. The rock mechanics SDM includes the results obtained from investigation and evaluation of the strength and deformability of intact rocks, fractures, and fractured rock masses, as well as the geometry of large-scaled deformation zones, the small-scaled fracture network system, thermal properties of rocks, and the in situ stress distribution of the disposal site. In addition, the site descriptive model should provide the sensitivity analysis results for the input parameters, and present the results obtained from evaluation of uncertainty.

Physical and Mechanical Characteristics of the Antarctic Rocks Exposed to the Extreme Environment (극한환경에 노출된 남극 암석의 물리적·역학적 특성)

  • The Antarctic continent exposed to strong wind, very low temperature, and extremely dry condition. The freezing-thawing cycles under this extreme environment change the mechanical characteristics of rocks near the ground surface. To investigate the effect of freezing-thawing cycles under the extreme environment understand on geotechnical properties of rocks, rocks from the Antarctica were collected from two places: (1) West Antarctic Cape Burks and (2) East Antarctic Terra Nova Bay areas. The rock characteristics of these two areas were described and compared. For Terra Nova Bay area, rock characteristics of rocks near the surface and depths exceeding 2.9 m were examined. The 'near-the-surface rocks' averages of absorption rate, P-wave velocity, and unconfined compressive strength were 0.56%, 3,717 m/s, and 109MPa, respectively; while, those values of 'deep-sited rocks' were 0.24%, 4,670 m/s, and 88MPa. From the measurements, it was found that the effects of weathering were not significant on mechanical characteristics (strength) but were pronounced on physical characteristics(absorption and P-wave velocity).

  • The purpose of this research is to examine experimentally the mechanical properties and economics of No-fines concrete for its application to the low-rise housing construction. Basic mechanical properties of No fines concrete are studied by measuring of compressive, tensile strength and stress-strain relationship, and economics of it is compared with other materials in unit cost and wall construction cost. From the test results, it can be concluded that No-fines concrete has advantages of good workability, light weight and lower construction cost, even though it has lower strength and modulus of elasticity than normal conc:rt:te does.

  • Modern aircraft are high-performance and lightweight. Thus, the characteristics of the flexible structure appear and affect flight performance or limit it. These flexible characteristics need to be analyzed from the early stages of aircraft design. To this end, a program to analyze the dynamic and static behavior of flexible aircraft has been developed and the results are presented. Based on the multi-body dynamics simulation technique, rigid flight mechanics, structural vibrating behavior, and unsteady aerodynamics have been developed and integrated. Lastly, the level flight and the turn flight of the flexible characteristic aircraft have been analyzed using this integrated simulation program.

  • 사회가 발달하여 감성사회로 접어들면서, 섬유산업도 새로운 감성소재를 개발하기 위한 연구를 추구하고 있다. 이러한 분야의 연구수단으로 생체모방(Biomimetics)을 활용하는 연구개발이 활발히 진행되고 있는데, 이중 미래지향적인 차세대 섬유로 Morphotex(R)를 이용한 Morpho 직물이 있다. 감성소재분야에서 '구조발색섬유'라고 불리어지는 독특한 색미를 가진 섬유소재인 Morphotex$^{(R)}$는 남미의 MORPHO 나비 날개의 구조적 발색원리를 모방하여 만든 광발색섬유로 염료와 안료를 사용하지 않는 친환경섬유이면서 고기능성과 쾌적성을 겸비한 소재로 요즘 많은 각광을 받고 있다. 본 연구에서는 구조발색 소재를 이용하여 제직한 감성의류소재 직물의 감량조건에 따른 감성특성을 비교.분석해보았다. 먼저 구조발색 소재로 제직 된 직물의 감량공정특성에 따른 구조발색 소재 직물의 인장 인열 특성을 분석하였으며 또한 KES-FB system으로 구조발색 소재 직물의 역학특성을 측정하고 측정한 역학특성으로부터 감성태를 평가해 보았다.

  • 매크로 스케일(macro-scale)에서 구조재료의 거동을 보다 자세히 이해하기 위해서는 구조재료를 구성하고 있는 마이크로 스케일(micro-scale)에서의 미세구조에 대한 이해가 필요하다. 특히 다결정을 가진 다상재료는 상(phase) 분포 상태에 의해 그 특성이 다르기 때문에, 상 분포에 따른 재료의 특성을 이해하는 것이 중요하다. 본 연구에서는 미세구조의 상 분포 특성을 묘사할 수 있는 상관관계 함수를 이용하여 미세구조의 상 분포 상태를 나타내고, 이를 활용한 미세구조 재구성 방법을 사용하여 2상 미세구조에서 특정 미세구조와 유사한 상 분포를 가진 미세구조를 생성하고 그 특성을 비교하였다. 그리고 다양한 상 분포를 가진 미세구조들에 유한요소해석 기법을 적용하여 미세구조의 역학적인 거동을 분석하였다. 이를 통해, 제한된 정보를 이용하여 통계학적으로 유사한 특성을 나타내는 미세구조를 모델링 할 수 있음을 검증하였고, 이러한 미세구조들 간의 역학적 거동은 서로 거의 동일함을 확인하여 미세구조 재구성 기법이 재료의 역학적인 거동을 예측하는데 유용하게 사용될 수 있음을 확인하였다.

  • The flexural strength of reinforced concrete members is strongly governed by mechanical properties of reinforcing bars, especially by yield strength, which have many uncertainties. The correct choice of probabilistic models for yield strength of reinforcement is an essential step to assure the safety and reliability of members. In this paper, a probabilistic model of yield strength of reinforcing bars is proposed based on literature and own experimental data.

  • In this paper, aerodynamic properties and improvements of the ${\pi}-shaped$ stiffening girder is studied by wind tunnel tests in steel composite cable stayed bridge. As an improvement device, fairing, extension, post and flap is tested. and the best improved section is selected and estimated on angles of attack, damping ratios and turbulent flows. It is shown that the selected fairing is effective to improve the aerodynamic stability. And this study can be utilized as a database of wind-resistant methodology of steel composite cable stayed bridge.

  • Membrane structures are now used in various ways throughout the world with the merits of free shape, lightness, durability, sunlight transmittance and homogeneous material. The development of new membrane material opened up new possibility for the design of new building structures. Recently it was mainly used PVC, PVF, PVDF, PTFE, ETFE membrane for using the roofing material of membrane structures. Some problems of membrane materials have fire proofing, lack of strength, self cleaning capacity, tear resistance, durability, heat insulation, sound insulation and elasticity. For the solution of this problems, it will be tested the mechanical properties of membrane material about tensile strength, tearing resistance, etc.
