The waveform inversion for isotropic media has ever been studied since the 1980s, but there has been few studies for anisotropic media. We present a seismic waveform inversion algorithm for 2-D heterogeneous transversely isotropic structures. A cell-based finite difference algorithm for anisotropic media in time domain is adopted. The steepest descent during the non-linear iterative inversion approach is obtained by backpropagating residual errors using a reverse time migration technique. For scaling the gradient of a misfit function, we use the pseudo Hessian matrix which is assumed to neglect the zero-lag auto-correlation terms of impulse responses in the approximate Hessian matrix of the Gauss-Newton method. We demonstrate the use of these waveform inversion algorithm by applying them to a two layer model and the anisotropic Marmousi model data. With numerical examples, we show that it's difficult to converge to the true model when we assumed that anisotropic media are isotropic. Therefore, it is expected that our waveform inversion algorithm for anisotropic media is adequate to interpret real seismic exploration data.

The sub-salt imaging technique becomes more crucial to detect the hydro-carbonates in petroleum exploration as the target reservoirs get deeper. However, the weak reflections from the sub-salt structures prevent us from obtaining high fidelity sub-salt image. As an effort to overcome this difficulty, we applied the waveform inversion by implementing multi-grid technique to the sub-salt imaging. Through the comparison between the conventional waveform inversion using fixed grid and the multi-grid technique, we confirmed that the waveform inversion using multi-grid technique has advantages over the conventional fixed grid waveform inversion. We showed that the multi-grid technique can complement he velocity estimation result of the waveform inversion for imaging the sub-salt structures, of which velocity model cannot be obtained correctly by the conventional fixed grid waveform inversion.
P wave travel-time delays have been analyzed and average travel-time anomalies due to lateral variation of the crustal structure have been calculated at the broad-band earthquake observatories of Korea Meteorology Administration (KMA) using the teleseismic deata collected during the period from 2000 to 2001. Maximum variation in the relative travel-time residuals is almost 1.5 seconds Azimuthal variation in the travel-time residuals is observed to indicate the existence of lateral P velocity heterogeneity beneath the stations with velocity contrasts of -4~4%. The estimated average travel-time delays are ranging from 0.05 to 0.3 seconds at the stations including Seoul, Chuncheon, Kanneung, Uljin, and Ulleung Island showing slow velocity contrasts of 0~4% P through the crust. Faster velocity contrasts of 0~4% have been observed at the stations including Seosan, Taejeon, Daegu, Seoguipo, and Busan showing average travel-time delays ranging from -0.05 to -0.3 seconds.

Hydrological models with many parameters and complex model structures require a powerful and detailed model calibration/validation scheme. In this study, we proposed a multi-variable and multi-site calibration and validation framework for the Soil Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model applied in the Gap-cheon catchment located downstream of the Geum river basin. The sensitivity analysis conducted before main calibration helped understand various hydrological processes and the characteristics of subcatchments by identifying sensitive parameters in the model. In addition, the model's parameters were estimated based on existing data prior to calibration in order to increase the validity of model. The Nash-Sutcliffe coefficients and correlation coefficient were used to estimate compare model output with the observed streamflow data: $R_{eff}\;and\;R^2$ ranged 0.41-0.84 and 0.5-0.86, respectively, at the Heuduck station. Model reproduced baseflow estimated using recursive digital filter except for 2-5% overestimation at the Sindae and Boksu stations. Model also reproduced the temporal variability and fluctuation magnitude of observed groundwater levels with $R^2$ of 0.71 except for certain periods. Therefore, it was concluded that the use of multi-variable and multi-site method provided high confidence for the structure and estimated parameter values of the model.
The experiment of rip current at successive ends of breaking wave crests was conducted in a laboratory wave basin, and its time-varying evolution according to incident wave durations was observed by using ortho-rectified images. The experiment utilized the generation of a quasi nodal line of the honeycomb-pattern waves (i.e., intersecting wave trains) formed by out-of-phase motion of two piston-type wave makers arranged in the transverse direction, instead of the original honeycomb pattern waves which are generated when two wave trains propagate with slightly different wave directions. The particle moving distance and velocity caused by the rip current were measured by using the particle tracking technique. As a result, the rip current was survived for a while even without incident waves after its generation due to several successive ends of wave crests, and it moved the particles further out to sea.

In this paper, we have designed TDL(True-time Delay Line) for eliminating beam-squint occurring in active phased array antenna with large electrical size operated in wide bandwidth, and have tested its electrical performance. The proposed TDL device is composed of 4-bit microstrip delay line structure and MMIC amplifier for compensation of the delay-line loss. The measured results of gain and phase versus delay state satisfy the electrical requirements, also P1dB output power and noise figure meet the requirement. To verify the performance of fabricated TDL, we have simulated the beam patterns of wide-band active phased array antenna using the measured results and have certified the beam pattern compensation performance. As a result of simulated beam pattern compensation with respect to the 675.8 mm size antenna which is operated in X-band, 800 MHz bandwidth, we have reduced the beam squint error of ${\pm}1^{\circ}$ with ${\pm}0.1^{\circ}$. So this TDL module is able to be applied to active phase array antenna system.
A method to quickly estimate broadband moment magnitudes (Mwp) to warn regional and teleseismic tsunamigenic earthquakes is tested for application of the method to the different seismic observation environment. In this study, the Mwp is calculated by integrating far-field P-wave or pP-wave of vertical component of displacement seismograms in time domain from earthquakes, having magnitude greater than 5.0 and occurred in and around the Korean peninsula from 2000 to 2006. We carefully set up the size of the time window for the computations to exclude S wave phases and other phases following after the P wave phase. The P wave velocities and the densities from the averaged Korean crustal model are used in the computations. Instrumental correction was performed to remove dependency on the seismograph. The Mwp after the instrumental correction is about 0.1 greater than the Mwp before the correction. The comparison of our results to the those of foreign agencies such as JMA and Havard CMT catalogues shows a higher degree of similarity. Thus our results provide an effective tool to estimate the earthquake size, as well as to issue the necessary information to a tsunami warning system when the effective earthquake occurs around the peninsula.

A reverberation chamber is widely used in mobile handset measurements due to its faster and simpler measurement process compared to traditional anechoic chambers. We propose an ultra-wideband inverse conical antenna design suitable as a reference antenna in a reverberation chamber. Traditionally, multiple discone antennas are needed to cover more than 10:1 operation bandwidth of a reverberation chamber. The proposed inverse conical antenna offers wideband impedance matching bandwidth by virtue of the linear impedance transition along its oblique side. The antenna is feasible to mount on the conductive walls which can be utilized as a ground to improve the matching bandwidth, antenna gain and radiation patterns. The antenna geometry is optimized using a 3D electromagnetic simulation tool and fabricated using a 3D printer. The measured results show that the antenna reflection coefficient lower than -10dB and radiation efficiency more than 70% at the frequency range of 0.65~7 GHz.
3D seismic data processing methods such as full waveform inversion or reverse-time migration require 3D wave propagation modeling and heavy calculations. We compared efficiency and accuracy of a Xeon Phi coprocessor to those of a high-end server CPU using 3D frequency-domain wave propagation modeling. We adopted the OpenMP parallel programming to the time-domain finite difference algorithm by considering the characteristics of the Xeon Phi coprocessors. We applied the Fourier transform using a running-integration to obtain the frequency-domain wavefield. A numerical test on frequency-domain wavefield modeling was performed using the 3D SEG/EAGE salt velocity model. Consequently, we could obtain an accurate frequency-domain wavefield and attain a 1.44x speedup using the Xeon Phi coprocessor compared to the CPU.
