Subway Line 2 Congestion Prediction During Rush Hour Based on Machine Learning (머신러닝 기반 2호선 출퇴근 시간대 지하철 역사 내 혼잡도 예측)

  • The subway is a public transportation that many people use every day. Line 2 especially has the most crowded stations during the day. However, the risk of crush accidents is increasing due to high congestion during rush hour and this reduces the safety and comfort of passengers. Subway congestion prediction is helpful to forestall problems caused by high congestion. Therefore, this study proposes machine learning classification models that predict subway congestion during commuting time. To predict congestion in Line 2 based in machine learning, we investigate variables that affect subway congestion through previous research and collect a dataset of subway congestion on Line 2 during rush hour from PUBLIC DATA PORTAL. The proposed model is expected to establish the subway operation plane to make passengers safe and satisfied.

  • The Seoul Metropolitan Subway, which started operating in 1974, plays a major role in transporting 7,289 thousands passengers daily. This trend of a steadily increase in passengers from 2012 has increased the congestion rate because of the limited capacity and time. To solve this problem, Seoul city is consistently working on improving the subway facilities, such as the construction of a detour path. This project, however, has only a slight effect on improving the congestion rate and is too expensive to construct the facilities. Hence, this study suggests The Congestion Standardization System based on the IoT for improving the subway congestion rate. Based on the system, the expected effect analysis was performed, which resulted in a decrease in ride passengers from 34 to 20. In addition, this expected effect analysis shows that the number of subway vehicles can increase from 20 to 24. The suggested system will have a significant effect on the efficiency of the management system.

  • Recently, Subway Line No. 9, described as a 'hell-like' subway for its recorded load factor of max. 240% due to the opening of the 2nd phase extension section, has been causing problems of recurrent congestion in a subway station building. A recurrent congestion in the station building becomes a factor to offend rail users and to reduce the efficiency of railway management. This study aims to establish the methodology for effect evaluation of information provided to rail users, and conducts a gate metering case study considering the congested conditions at a platform among the methodologies for effect evaluation. The metering effect evaluation by load factor was conducted through selecting the micro simulation and pedestrian simulation tool grafting a gate metering. As a result, it was confirmed that, if gate metering is performed, the service level and pedestrian density of a platform by load factor would improve. In other words, if metering is conducted at a platform, it is possible to control the load factor in the waiting space of a platform. Therefore, it was judged through this study that it is possible to set up the index for effect evaluation of information provided to manage congestion of rail users, and establish the methodology for effect evaluation of information provided to rail users through a program.

  • Wireless local area network (WLAN) is a widely used wireless access method due to its easy usability and excellent performance. However, its performance degrades significantly as the number of users increases. In busy train stations, where the number of WLAN users are large and, more importantly the number of simultaneous packet transmission attempts is extremely large due to the time synchronization upon train arrival, the packet transmission delay problem is very severe and almost impossible for WLAN stations to initiate communication with WLAN networks. In this paper, a novel distributed WLAN access scheme for efficient WLAN communication in busy train stations is proposed. Using the proposed scheme, WLAN access delay can be significantly reduced under highly congested traffic environments. Therefore, a significant performance enhancement for the WLAN performance used in the Communication Based Train Control (CBTC) can be achieved.

  • The total number of railroad stations managed in Korea is 322 (including general and wide-area railways), and a considerable number of stations are aging. In terms of the size of the existing railway station and the number of entrances, it has not been possible to secure adequate service capacity, and the demand for station improvement is increasing due to changes in surrounding conditions such as urban development. In the past, railroad stations were focused on the simple function of a connection passage in terms of maintenance or management, but in recent years, railroad stations are also changing to an atmosphere that they should be reborn as a user-centered comfortable, convenient, and safe service provision space. In this study, a case study related to the improvement of the old railway station was conducted to derive an improvement plan that meets the improvement standard of the old station, and the service level evaluation standard was developed. By introducing the concept of service level (LOS) in the development model, station congestion, station movement convenience, and station safety were selected as evaluation indicators. In addition, this development model applied an analytical stratification technique to divide various evaluation elements of each indicator into major and detailed elements and derive the relative importance of the elements by class. Priority for improvement was derived using the ratio of the number of E and F on the LOS for each facility. Based on this study, it is expected to be helpful in using it as an evaluation criterion for improving objective and equitable railway station.

  • Concentration of people in urban areas and development around Metro make exceed the passenger number which was calculated when the Metro station was built, in the result the Metro stations are crowed this is the study on the improvement of Metro station's congestion in urban areas for ensuring the passenger safety, the space of evacuation path and promoting the more pleasant riding environment with an environmental- friendly approach.

Preliminary Design of a Urban Transit Passenger Guidance System Using Congestion Management Model (혼잡관리 모형을 이용한 도시철도 이용객 동선유도시스템 기본설계)

  • The congestion of railway vehicle and station shows up to 220%. Especially, transfer resistance of passenger increase rapidly by the collision of circulation. So increment of travel time, occurrence of safety accidents act as a factor that inhibits the utilization of urban railway station. In this paper, to improve traveling speed and comfort of urban rail passengers, urban transit passenger guidance system using congestion management model is proposed. The congestion management model that can mitigate a recurring/non-recurring congestion is constructed and the preliminary design of the system (middleware system, control system, guidance drive system) is carried out. Passenger Guidance System is configured by step for changing the external data into a form usable by the algorithm, step to perform the congestion management algorithm using the real-time data and historical data, step to control device based on the value that is calculated by congestion management algorithm, step to drive the device based on the information in the control system and circulation guidance devices. In the future, detail design will be performed based on the preliminary design. A prototype of the various devices according to the station structures and locations will be made. The control module of guidance device will be developed.

  • The form of travel has been changing to dynamic, experience and family. Festivals are popular, specially the historic culture festivals, whose themes are a history event, a time and the people, are preferred to families because they give visitors opportunities of education and experience. Evaluation of festivals is important that it diagnoses the problems and enhancement One of the evaluation methods, Importance-Performance Analysis is useful which it is easy to find priority with visual matrix without complex statistical technique and a technical terminology. This research used IPA to evaluate The Yeoncheon Jeongok Paleolithic Festival which is one of the popular historic culture festivals. From the result 'unique food', 'rest facility', 'other convenience facility', 'hygiene', 'crowding' were included in selected to 'concentrate' territory of the IPA matrix. Therefor the festival manager should put his efforts to develop unique food, build more rest and other convenience facilities, enhance hygiene, and lowered crowding.

  • Shindorim Station is the most important transfer station which is crossed Seoul Metro Line-2 and national rail traffic Kyungbu, Honam and Kyungin Line etc.. There is the lagest transfer passengers and the greatest rail traffic. Therefore to solve the congeted station problem, Shindorim station extension project has been planned. This project has very difficult many problems. One of them is undercrossing the national rail traffic ground without open-cut excavation. There are many undercrossing construction methods in our country. But this project is required the best safety. So the best applicable methods are investigated, which are Front-Jacking, NTR and TRcM. In Design stage Front-Jacking with PRS method which is gound reinforcing is applied.

  • Urban transit construction has increased since 1970, and the utilization of urban transit system also has sharply increased. However, the prediction for station scale was underestimated in design, eventually, passenger crowdedness of station, platforms and transfer pathways has got worse. Especially, safety for passenger is concerned for rush hour because of passenger crowdedness peak. Therefore, several stations, which service level is D, were investigated for passenger crowdedness. In this study, measures which are to mitigate passenger crowdedness for stations are indicated.
