  • The platform of railroad station for domestic passenger train has been operated at two categories like the platforms if low level(500mm, mainline) and high level(1,135mm, metropolitan subway line). To operate both metropolitan subway line and mainline railroad safely, it is essential to develop the doorstep equipment of railway vehicle regardless of low and high level platforms. On the other hand, the domestic test standard at durability and reliability of doorstep equipment has not been existed until now. This study aims at the development on doorstep equipment of telescopic sliding type for low and high level platforms. Durability analysis with VPD(Virtual Product Development) techniques are performed and the durability standard & qualification life through the rig test during no failure test time is examined in accordance with reliability qualification test.

  • The imbalance of air supply and the exhaust on subway platforms has led to the installation of platform screen doors in underground subway stations. This imbalance causes the accumulation of pollutants on the platform and loss of comfort due to the lack of ventilation. In this study, a floor exhaust system was optimized using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and an optimization program. The optimized floor exhaust system was manufactured and tested experimentally to evaluate the particle collection efficiency. CFX 17.0 and HEEDS were used to analyze the flow field and optimize the principal dimensions of the exhaust system. As a result of the three-step optimization, the optimized floor exhaust system had a total height of 1.78 m, pressure drop of 430 Pa, and particle collection capability of 61%. A fine dust particle collection experiment was conducted using a floor exhaust system that was manufactured at full scale based on the optimized design. The experiment indicated about 65% particle collection efficiency. Therefore, the optimized design can be applied to subway platforms to draw in exhaust air and remove particulate matter at the same time.

  • The railway platform is an important facility closely related to the safety of passengers, trains, and images of railway facilities, and requires thorough facility management. However, the problem that the finishing material (plastering mortar) for the joint finishing of dissimilar materials (concrete+granite) falls off in the direction of the track at the platform podium is occurring multiple times across the country. Since these problems threaten the safety of train operation and the safety of passengers, immediate and continuous management is required. This study tried to derive improvement plans through the analysis of the drop-off problem of finishing materials occurring at the platform podium. The status of missing finishing materials for the platform podiums of about 200 railway stations and the related design and construction standards of the Korea National Railway were investigated. After that, the cause of the drop-off of the finishing material was analyzed, and as a result, it was found that the main cause was the boundary between the roadbed and the architectural process that occurred during construction. Subsequently, in connection with the derived causes and design, construction standards, (1) improvement of finishing materials or construction methods, (2) design of finishing materials that are easy to adjust height, (3) design of separate finishing methods, (4) improvement methods and durability were suggested.

  • Numerical prediction methods were applied to investigate the turbulent air currents and air-conditioning efficiency in an underground subway station, and the results compared to experimental data. The Shin-gumho Station($8^{th}$ floor underground and 43.6m in depth) in Seoul was selected for the analysis. The entire station was covered for simulation and the ventilation mode was ordinary. The ventilation diffusers were modeled as 95 square shapes of $0.6m{\times}0.6m$ in the lobby and as 222 square shapes in the platform. Cooling air of $47,316m^3/h$ was supplied and the returned air of $33,980m^3/h$ is exhausted in the lobby and the cooling air of $33,968m^3/h$ is supplied and the returned air of $76,190m^3/h$ was exhausted in the platform which is the same as the experimental data. The cases of the screen-door-closed and open were respectively investigated. A total of 7.5million grids were generated and the whole domain divided into 22 blocks for MPI efficiency of calculation. Large eddy simulation (LES) was applied to solve the momentum and energy equation.

  • The travel demand, peak hour ratio and forms of platform of urban railway stations are very different each other, also the users' behavior is. So the types of urban railway stations have to be classified according to these characteristics. However, the current methods of classification are arbitrary on the purpose of each studies and the legal standards are very simple; categorized by normal station vs. whistle station, types of trains, forms of platforms and shapes of architecture. This study clarifies the standards for classifying the types of urban railway stations, results the complete enumeration survey on all the urban railway stations in Seoul Metropolitan Area and makes the database based on the surveyed data, purposing on helping for making strategies and researching. On this study, utilizing the database which is established for this study, the correlation between the physical and geographical characteristics and users' travel patterns of urban railway stations is clarified by the statistical analysis. In the future, the statistical results will be helpful for making strategies and researching.

  • Currently, dozens of CCTVs are widely used in railway station for monitoring passengers in danger and security areas. The most frequent accidents occur at the platform area where passengers boarding the train. However, It is almost impossible that station operator monitors dozens of CCTV screens and recognizes immediately accidents and handle them. Therefore, railway platform monitoring system using image processing technology which automatically detects platform accidents is needed, and in order to that, preferentially, accurate determination of train state in the platform is required. In the paper, we propose train state detection algorithm for vision based railway platform monitoring system. the proposed algorithm determines four different states i.e. trains approach(IN), departure(OUT), stop(ON), and empty(OFF) of the train, in the platform. To evaluate the proposed algorithm, we present the train detection results for the Seoul Metro Line 4 Dongjak and Namtaeryeong Station.

  • Unlike the existing subway service evaluation system, service evaluation indices by travel section in 26 subway stations were developed and appraised. Travel sections were classified into (1) subway station approach, (2) from entrance to platform, (3) platform, and (4) passageway for transfer, after which weights by travel section and by service evaluation index were estimated using analytic hierarchy process (AHP) by transportation experts. Subway service satisfaction data was gathered from 2000 passengers at the 26 subway stations. The results showed that the weights of (1) subway station approach and (4) passageway for transfer were highest and the weights by travel sections were different if kinds of services were the same. Comfort on the platform, crowdedness in the passageway for transfer, and transfer information from entrance to platform were highest in order in terms of satisfaction. Meanwhile, the results of the IPA showed that services in the passageway for transfer were high in terms of weights but were relatively low in terms of satisfaction. Therefore the services in passages for transfer needed to be reformed preferentially.

  • Recently, a study on the commercialization of Rope type Platform Safe Door (RPSD) technology has commenced. The study focuses on RPSD, in which a rope screen ascends to allow safe passage from the platform to the transit vehicle in aboveground stations. Currently, a pilot installation has taken in place with Daegu Metro Line 2 in MoonYang station starting from March of 2013. However, there is a need to select an appropriate pilot installation's object for the improvement in the future RPSD. An appropriate designation would correspond with the needs of the railroad corporation and as a historic railway platform with safe facilities. This study tried to usa Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) to determine the priority of the KTX stations to attain a list of appropriate designations for future RPSD installations by analyzing the followings: management of the facilities, operational risks, and intent of business projects. As a case study, it was applied to the evaluation of the KTX stations. For the application, it used relative measurement to calculate the weight of upper level structuring, and absolute measurement for low level structuring instead of pairwise comparisons.
