  • The concepts of ratio and proportion are familiar with students but have difficulties in use. The purpose of this paper is to identify the meanings of the concepts of ratio and proportion through investigating the historical development process of the meanings and representations of them. The early meanings of ratio and proportion were arithmetical meanings, however, geometrical meanings had taken the place of them because of the discovery of incommensurability. After the development of algebraic representation, the meanings of ratio and proportion have been growing into algebraic meanings including arithmetical and geometrical meanings. Through the historical development process of ratio and proportion, it is observable that the meanings of mathematical concepts affect development of symbols, and the development of symbols also affect the meanings of mathematical concepts.

  • We have many problems in the teaching and learning of proof, especially in the demonstrative geometry of middle school mathematics introducing the proof for the first time. Above all, it is the serious problem that many students do not understand the meaning of proof. In this paper we intend to show that teaching the meaning of proof in terms of historic-genetic approach will be a method to improve the way of teaching proof. We investigate the development of proof which goes through three stages such as experimental, intuitional, and scientific stage as well as the development of geometry up to the completion of Euclid's Elements as Bran-ford set out, and analyze the teaching process for the purpose of looking for the way of improving the way of teaching proof through the historic-genetic approach. We conducted lessons about the angle-sum property of triangle in accordance with these three stages to the students of seventh grade. We show that the students will understand the meaning of proof meaningfully and properly through the historic-genetic approach.

  • In our school mathmatics, the irrational numbers and the real numbers are defined and instructed on the basis of decimal fractions. In relation to this fact, we identified the essences of the real number and the irrational number defined by the decimal fractions through the historical analysis. It is revealed that the formation of real numbers means the numerical measurements of all magnitudes and the formation of irrational numbers means the numerical measurements of incommensurable magnitudes. Finally, we suggest instructional plan for the meaninful understanding of the real number concept.

  • This study purpose is to discuss critically the conception of history in Hegel and Marx by drawing on Merleau-Ponty's existential theory of history, finishing with concluding remarks. Merleau-Ponty insists that history is always history experienced. This thesis is his own principle in investigating human history. From this perspective, he begins to flesh out problems with history which Hegel and Marx had understood idealistically and materialistically respectively. He criticised that if Hegel grasps history in terms of teleology, he failed to explain the source and origin of historical meaning from which history makes sense. He failed to think that what gives history meaning comes from embodied consciousness. This means that history is not made of dialectical thinking. The thing is different from such an imaginative construal. History as it stands is not like that. It is not running around like Hegelian dialectical thinking. Marx understood historical behavior wrongly when he explained class struggle in terms of productive relations. He disregarded how class was sedimented or embodied in the minds of proletarians. Owing to this, Marx could not suppose that class consciousness is determined not causally or externally but by incarnated experience. It is affected in so far as it is affected by somebody, that is, the worker. At that moment only Class consciousness begins to work. Marx did not catch sight of this hidden fact.

  • The purpose of this paper is to introduce Harvard's general education in order to provide in sights into problem-solving in Korean higher education. To do this, this paper explored the historical tradition of liberal education and the education system of Harvard University. 1. The education of Harvard University is based on liberal education which is a model integrated knowledge and conduct. 2. The education System of Harvard University is divided into two categories: undergraduate education characterized as 'liberalize' and graduate education as 'deliberalize'. It is believed that the above characteristics of Harvard University's education system can provide insights into the future reform of Koran higher education.
