Tradition of Liberal Education and Harvard Education

The purpose of this paper is to introduce Harvard's general education in order to provide in sights into problem-solving in Korean higher education. To do this, this paper explored the historical tradition of liberal education and the education system of Harvard University. 1. The education of Harvard University is based on liberal education which is a model integrated knowledge and conduct. 2. The education System of Harvard University is divided into two categories: undergraduate education characterized as 'liberalize' and graduate education as 'deliberalize'. It is believed that the above characteristics of Harvard University's education system can provide insights into the future reform of Koran higher education.

자유교육의 전통과 하버드 교육

본고는 하버드의 교양교육이 자유교육으로서 어떠한 역사적 의미를 가질 수 있는지 살펴보는 것을 목적으로 하고 있다. 이를 위해 오늘날 대학교육의 원형인 자유교육의 의미를 역사적으로 개괄해 보았고, 자유교육의 전통에서 가장 끝자리를 차지하고 있는 하버드 자유교육의 특징과 역사적 의미를 살펴보았다. 이러한 고찰은 "대학의 특성화와 구조조정"의 문제로 많은 혼란을 겪고 있는 우리 대학들이 어떠한 문제점을 가지고 있는지 그리고 더 생각해야 할 점이 무엇인지 더듬어 볼 계기가 될 수 있을 것이다. 우리 대학들의 혼란은 대학교육을 학부교육과 대학원교육으로 구분하지 않는데서 기인한다. 학부교육은 학습자의 "liberalize"를 목표로, 전문대학원을 포함한 대학원은 전문적인 지식교육을 목표로 삼아야 한다. 하지만 이에 대한 우리 대학들의 인식은 매우 부족하다. 이러한 인식 부족은 대학의 학사구조와 교양교육의 왜곡을 초래하기도 한다. 본 고찰을 통해 이러한 문제점을 함께 고민할 수 있는 계기가 되었으면 한다.
