  • This study was conducted to identify the factors influencing health-related quality of life of urinary incontinent elderly women. The Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) conducted by the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC) was used as baseline data to evaluate how activity limitation, depression experience and subjective health perception influence the health-related quality of life of urinary incontinent elderly women. The urinary incontinent elderly women differed significantly in terms of activity limitation, depression experience, subjective health perception influence and health-related quality of life compared to elderly women without incontinence. In contrast, income and education were not correlated with either of the aforementioned groups. The subjective health perception was identified as the only factor influencing the health-related quality of life of urinary incontinent elderly women. The results of this study will serve as basic data for positive treatment promotion and development of assessment programs for incontinence patients who recognize incontinence symptoms as part of the aging process and are therefore unwilling to receive care.

  • The objective of this survey was to understand the effect of the subjective degree and pain of urinary incontinence on the quality of life of the middle-aged women with the subjective symptom of urinary incontinence. A questionnaire was carried out to investigate the quality of life in relation to urinary incontinence for 114 patients of chronic musculoskeletal system from Feb. to May in 2010. Overall, the subjects responded that their quality of life was medium(($61.36{\pm}13.2$score) and the pain related to urinary incontinence was low back pain. The degree of pain was between the moderate and a little severe in the VAS (Visual Analogue Scale) range of 4 to 7. It was also shown that the action of the subjects was affected by urinary incontinence in forms of avoidance limitation and psycosocial effect. Since the survey showed that the urinary incontinence and pain substantially affect the quality of life of the middle-aged women, the result may provide basic information in developing a practical intervention program.

  • This study aimed to investigate factors affecting frailty by urinary incontinence groups among the vulnerable elderly woman in Korea. In this secondary analysis, data were collected from records for 3,251 elders registered in the Visiting Health Management program of Public Health Centers in 2012. body mass index, waist circumference, timed up & go, depression, self rated helath, walking exercise, flexibility exercise, strengh exercise and frailty were assessed. Data were analyzed using $x^2$-test, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation and stepwise regression to determine the associated factors of frailty by urinary incontinence. Depression, walking exercise, timed up & go and age were found to be factors significantly associated with frailty among the elders with incontinence(F=38.321, p<.001). Age, depression, walking exercise, self rated health and tined up & go were found to be factors associated with frailty in the elders without incontinence(F=265.666 p<.001). The findings show that frailty of elders and associated factors were different by urinary incontinence, and common factors affecting frailty were depression, walking exercise, timed up & go, age. Thus, these factors should be considered in the development of intervention program for care and prevention of frailty and program should be modified according to urinary incontinence.

  • Objectives: This investigation was carried out to understand the status of the urinary incontinence (UI) and overactive bladder (OABs) syndrome of women in a rural region. Methods: The authors conducted a questionnaire survey among the 322 females who voluntarily participated in a health examination, from 16 to 18 August 2001. Using by definition of UI and OABs, we calculated the proportion of UI, OABs I, and OABs II. The data collected was evaluated using the SPSS 12.0 statistical package, and the differences of symptoms and problems related to daily life between UI, OABs patients and the others were analyzed using a Chi-square test or Fisher's exact test. Results: The overall proportion of UI was 35.4%, and stress UI (32.9%) is more common than urgency UI (17.4%) and mixed UI (14.9%). The proportion of OABs I and OABs II were respectively 36.0%, 14.0%. Symptoms related to UI or OABs were nocturia (35.1%), frequency (23.9%), urgency (21.4%) etc. Of the incontinence cases, 27.2% had experienced UI for a period of one to three years. The proportion of OABs increased significantly by age (p<0.05), UI didn't. The most frequent symptoms in UI and OABs were respectively 'slow stream', 'urgency'. The most frequent problem of daily life in UI and OABs was 'seeking toilet firstly at stranger place'. Conclusions: The proportion of UI and OABs in our study were respectively 35.4%, 14.0%. UI and OABs must be very significant health problems in women, especially rural region. Systemic and profound interventions for UI and OABs need to administer to women in Korea.
