This study aimed to investigate the effect of an inorganic conditioner composed of natural inorganic materials on the dewaterbility of sewage sludge and compare the performance with those of conventional organic polymeric conditioners. A dosage of 2.0 mg inorganic conditioner/g sludge TS decreased time to filter test (TTF), specific resistance to filtration (SRF), water content of dewatered sludge cake, turbidity from 146 to 41 sec, from $8.3{\times}10^{14}$ to $2.4{\times}10^{14}$ m/kg, from 82.1 to 77.1%, from 112 to 61.1 NTU, respectively, which was compatible to the conventional cation organic polymer. An inorganic conditioner would be used in sewage sludge treatment as a suitable alternative conditioner. Regression analysis showed a strong relationship among TTF, SRF, and water content.
In fermentation-separation processes, nanofiltration membrane processes can be used to separate organic acid and other byproducts such as sugars and proteins. In this study, new nanofiltration membranes were prepared to improve organic acid permeability during the separation processes of fermentation broth. Positively charged nanofiltration membrane was introduced to reduce lactic acid rejection by electrostatic attraction between lactic acid and nanofiltration membrane. Newly fabricated nanofiltration membranes were prepared by grafting cationic polyelectrolyte, PEI, on membrane surface. Thenanofiltration membranes showed positively charged surface potential. As a result, lactic acid rejection was remarkably reduced while the rejection of glucose was not changed significantly.

Riverbank filtration is a natural process, using alluvial aquifers to remove contaminants and pathogens in river water for the production of drinking water. In Korea, most of the drinking water is supplied by surface water in-take. However, maintaining the quality of the drinking water becomes more and more difficult due to the increase of contamination. In riverbank filtration, the understanding of contaminant transport is an important task for the production of high quality drinking water and for the maintenance of facilities. In this paper, the transport behavior of hydrophobic organic contaminants is investigated when contaminants coexist with dissolved organic matter (DOM) and bacteria. In the developed model, the aquifer is thought of as a four phase system: two mobile colloidal phases, an aqueous phase, and a stationary solid matrix phase. The model equations are solved numerically for various situations. Results indicate that the presence of colloidal matters can enhance the mobility of contaminant significantly and that partitioning coefficients play an important role in the process.

The effects of electrical fields on the efficiencies in ultrafiltration for protein separation were explored. The experiments were proceeded under constant transmembrane pressure (THP) using protein (albumin and lysozyme) solutions. For ultrafiltrations, cellulose membranes with molecular weight cut off (MWCO) 30 kDa were used. It is found that electrical field improved the filtration flux of albumin solution. The electrical field showed another interesting effect for filtration of protein solution. Depending on the electrical charges of protein molecules, the electrical field promoted or hindered the permeation of proteins through membranes. With the effect of electrical field, not only the permeation flux but also the selectivity of ultrafiltration could be improved.
This work focused on the degradation of natural organic matter (NOM) present in lake water using a combined pkotocatalysisimicrofiltration (MF) process. The system performances were investigated in terms of organic removal efficiency and membrane permeability. The addition of iron oxide particles (IOP) into the photocatalytic membrane reactor improved initial NOM removal by sorption, but during photocatalysis the removal efficiency was reversed, probably due to the scattering of UV light by IOP. The modification of TiO$_2$ surfaces by IOP deposition was conducted to enhance the photocatalytic NOM removal efficiency. A minimal amount of Impregnation of IOP on TiO$_2$ surfaces was required to prevent the light scattering effect as well. The coating of MF membranes with IOP helped to improve the NOM removal efficiency while sorbing NOM by IOP. Regardless of tile operating conditions and particles addition examined, no significant fouling was occurring at a flux of 15 L/$m^2$-h during entire MF operation.
The effects of relaxation and backwashing on fouling in ultrafiltration were investigated using full-scale membrane bioreactors (MBRs) which operated at a constant flux of 30 LMH. This paper also estimated the feasibility of using intermittent aeration strategies for minimizing the hydraulic resistance to filtration in comparison with the continuous aeration for running MBRs. Multiple cycles of filtration (14.5 min each) and relaxation (0.5 min each) were repeated. Similarly, a backwash was conducted by replacing a relaxation after each filtration cycle for the comparative performance test. The attached cake thickness on the membrane rapidly increased, caused by subsequent no aeration leading to easier combining with gel layer and the formation of heterogeneous layer on the membrane surface. During periodic backwashing, it is expected that gel and thin cake layer might sufficiently be removed by heterogeneous layer. After periodic backwashing, subsequent cake layer formation during time of no aeration was rapid than frequent no aeration, acting as a prefilter and preventing further irreversible fouling. Based on the Pearson correlation analysis, overall period fouling (dTMP/min) and average of all cycles (dTMP/min) were strongly correlated with the on-off period of aeration for operating MBRs.
Laboratory scale model was constructed for open-cut riverbed infiltration experiment and four kinds of media were selected, medium sand, sand, volcanic rock, and gravel, for the experiment. Hydraulic conductivity for each medium and flow rate from the collecting pipe with functional screen were estimated from the experiment. Modified hydraulic conductivity scenarios considering turbid water (30~50 NTU) were applied in Visual MODFLOW modeling to analyze the effects of turbid water on the flow rate. Twenty-two scenarios were generated considering prticles in turbid water and applied to each medium cases in MODFLOW modeling. The minimum error was occurred when the gravel medium had 20% less hydraulic conductivities for the third layer-depth from the top and clay particles in turbid water might play a role in adsorption process to the surface of volcanic rock (2~5 mm). For medium sand case the error was also quite small when the mediumhas 5% less hydraulic conductivities for the second layer-depth from the top.

Wireless sensor nodes operate in open environments. The deployed sensor nodes are very vulnerable to physical attacks from outside. Attackers compromise some sensor nodes. The compromised nodes by attackers can lead to false data injection into sensor networks. These attacks deplete the limited energy of sensor nodes. Ye et al. proposed the Statistical En-Route Filtering (SEF) as a countermeasure of the attacks. The sensor node in SEF examines the event reports based on certain uniform probability. Thus, the same energies are consumed in both legitimate reports and false reports. In this paper, we propose a method that each node controls the probability of attempts to verify a report to reduce energy consumption of sensor nodes. The probability is determined in consideration of the remaining energy of the node, the number of hops from the node to SINK node, the ratio of false reports. the proposed method can have security which is similar with SEF and consumes lower energy than SEF.
The experiments were performed using both batch and continuous column reactors. Batch biodegradation studies were performed under aerobic conditions to determine the biodegradable fraction of the natural organic matter (NOM) source. NOM source was evaluated for its biodegradability at three different UV irradiation conditions and compared to its biodegradability without UV irradiation. In continuous experiments, system operating parameters of empty bed contact time (EBCT), recycle ratio, and influent concentration affected the extent of biofiltration in the biofilters. The effluent UV254/DOC ratios fro the biologically active columns were consistently lower than the influent values, which indicated that the dissolved organic carbon (DOC) removed by biodegradation was not a significant part of the UV-absorbable material. The increase in UV254/DOC ratio was caused by the DOC decrease across the biofilter because there was essentially no difference between the feed and effluent UV254 absorbance values over time. The results of this research showed that biofiltration was an effective method for removing the biodegradable fraction of NOM from water supplies.
